Libya's Human Rights Body Blames Dbaiba's Interior Ministry for Militia Abuses
The National Institution for Human Rights in Libya (NIHRL) has strongly condemned disturbing footage showing a young woman being interrogated in chains by a known militia leader, and placed full legal and moral responsibility on the country's Ministry of Interior, headed by the outgoing Prime Minister Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba. In an official statement, the NIHRL expressed 'deep concern' over widely circulated images and videos showing the woman handcuffed and subjected to an inhumane interrogation. The man seen questioning her was identified as Ahmed Al-Dabbashi, also known as Al-Amo, a notorious militia leader operating in Libya's western coastal region. The NIHRL emphasized that Al-Dabbashi has been implicated in numerous serious human rights violations, including the abuse of migrants and Libyan citizens in trafficking hubs under his control in Sabratha. He is also accused of human trafficking, migrant smuggling, and other grave offenses. The statement described the footage as 'a blatant assault on human dignity' and a violation of national laws, constitutional norms, and international human rights principles. The NIHRL further warned that such acts undermine the rule of law and violate the constitutional principle of separation of powers. The institution called on the Attorney General, the judiciary, and relevant security authorities to launch a full, transparent investigation into the abuses allegedly committed by Al-Dabbashi. It demanded swift legal action and the imposition of the harshest penalties available under Libyan law. Crucially, the NIHRL held Libya's Acting Interior Minister and Prime Minister Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba personally responsible for failing to stop these violations and for enabling a security environment in which militia crimes continue with impunity. This case has reignited calls for disarming militias, re-establishing state authority in western Libya, and prosecuting warlords who continue to operate outside the legal system. Sabratha residents confined to homes amid armed confrontations
BY Libyan Express Jun 06, 2025 - 15:37 Updated: Jun 06, 2025 - 15:38 Former Libyan UN Security Council Ambassador Ibrahim al-Dabbashi Fighting broke out in the western city of Sabratha during Eid prayers, according to former Libyan UN Security Council Ambassador Ibrahim al-Dabbashi. In a Facebook post, al-Dabbashi stated that religious observances were interrupted when 'the takbir (saying 'Allahu Akbar') stopped in the mosque, the sound of bullets and RPGs increased, and armoured vehicles were deployed between the houses and around the mosque.' Al-Dabbashi reported that residents of Sabratha were required to remain in their homes, resulting in the cancellation of Eid prayers and celebrations. The former ambassador said the clashes involved armed groups and cited vendettas, revenge, and disputes over financial gains as underlying factors. He described the groups as receiving funding from governing authorities while claiming loyalty to them. Al-Dabbashi noted an increase in young casualties and called for an end to violence and national unity. Sabratha is located approximately 70 kilometers west of Tripoli. Eid Prayers Cancelled as Fighting Erupts in Libya
By Ahmad El-Assasy Violent clashes broke out on Thursday between rival militias in the western Libyan city of Sabratha, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries, according to medical sources. The fighting was triggered by the killing of an armed fighter from the city of Zawiya, prompting fierce retaliation by his militia group. Local sources confirmed that a child from the Al-Dabbashi family was also killed during the exchanges of fire. The violence erupted after an assault on the "Liberton" beach resort, which is reportedly under the control of local militia leader Ahmed Al-Dabbashi, known as "Al-Amo." The facility was set on fire during the attack. As gunfire from medium and heavy weapons echoed throughout the city, authorities cancelled Eid Al-Adha prayers for public safety. In the wake of the violence, a video circulated online showing groups of irregular migrants fleeing detention facilities in Sabratha amid the ongoing clashes. The Libyan Red Crescent's Sabratha branch issued an urgent appeal to residents, urging them to stay indoors and avoid conflict zones. The organization warned that civilians were at serious risk and emphasized the need to prioritize their safety. The fighting involves Al-Dabbashi's militia, which has been linked to drug trafficking, and a rival group from Zawiya known as the "Far" militia, accused of smuggling fuel, narcotics, and human trafficking. In a video message released after the outbreak of violence, Ahmed Al-Dabbashi ("Al-Amo") declared his intention to expose all parties involved in migrant smuggling networks operating in the city. 'I will name everyone implicated in this dirty business — individuals and entities alike. What happened today cannot be ignored,' he said. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan
