Most animal-based gelatin products in Malaysia lack halal certification

KUALA LUMPUR: The vast majority of animal-based gelatin products used in consumer goods in Malaysia are not halal-certified, says an expert. More than 95 per cent of the animal-based gelatin or protein used in food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and daily-use products in Malaysia reportedly do not have halal certification. Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) chemical and process engineering lecturer Associate Professor Dr Farhan Mohd Said said less than three per cent of gelatin used in local products is halal-certified, reported Utusan Malaysia today. Gelatin is a colloid made from collagen, usually extracted from the skin, bones and tissues of animals such as cows and pigs. She attributed the low percentage to complex standards and procedures for obtaining halal certification. All stages — from slaughtering, pretreatment, extraction, filtration, purification to drying — must comply with the Malaysian Halal Management System (SPHM) and Halal Certification Procedure Manual (MPPHM). Dr Farhan said awareness of halal certification also remains low among local industries, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the ruminant livestock sector, due to financial and management constraints. Despite Malaysia having thousands of cattle, goat, buffalo and freshwater fish farmers, a halal gelatin industry is almost non-existent. Most farms are small-scale and cannot meet domestic demand. According to the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), the total cattle and buffalo population in 2023 was about 798,771 — only sufficient to meet around 15 per cent of local needs. This is because producing 1kg of halal bovine gelatin requires about 6kg of bones and skin from properly slaughtered cattle. With only 726,206 cows available, Malaysia imports about 85 per cent of its gelatin needs, Dr Farhan said.

Pahang sultan gets behind wheel to inspect illegal durian farm in rough Raub terrain [WATCH]

RAUB: Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah drove a four-wheel-drive vehicle to a former illegal durian farm at Batu 3, Jalan Sungai Ruan–Sungai Klau, near here yesterday. The Pahang ruler was behind the wheel of a white Toyota Hilux, accompanied by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail in the front passenger seat. A one-minute, 54-second video shared on the Kesultanan Pahang Facebook page showed Al-Sultan Abdullah carefully manoeuvering the vehicle on a hillside dirt road flanked by dense forest. The sultan maintained a firm grip on the steering wheel as he focused on navigating the unfamiliar route until he reached the top of the hill, where the landscape levelled out. The caption accompanying the video said that Al-Sultan Abdullah had driven through steep and rugged terrain to reach the site yesterday. "Earlier, the sultan met officers from the Raub Land and District Office to discuss the encroachment on 26,000 acres (10,521ha) of land in the district, which had been going on for some time. "Since enforcement began in mid-2024, 15,000 durian trees on about 500 acres (202.34ha) have been felled," the caption said. The post said the sultan's presence underscored his commitment to curbing land encroachment, particularly the illegal cultivation of durian in the area. Journalists who accompanied the visit endured a similarly rough journey, as the site is only accessible by four-wheel-drive vehicles. The 15-minute uphill ride required careful navigation on a narrow road, with a steep slope on one side and a ravine on the other, with several sharp bends. To reach the site bordering the Gunung Benom Forest Reserve, the convoy passed through licensed orchards and dense forests before arriving at an area full of durian tree stumps. Raub, renowned for its Musang King durian, has recently come under the spotlight of the authorities throught the Op Sekat 3.0 enforcement operation that targeted illegal durian plantations. Durian trees were felled on 202.34ha of illegal farms, an area roughly the size of 283 football fields. The operation ran from April 8 to May 3. Al-Sultan Abdullah yesterday expressed his shock at the scale of the land encroachment — estimated at 10,521ha, or equivalent to about 14,700 football fields.

Pahang Sultan to politicians: Stop being clowns, be the bridge to unite people

The Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, has called on political figures to stop being 'clowns' by stoking issues related to race, religion, and royalty, which could incite the people. Speaking at the opening of the newly built Masjid Abdulrahman Ibn Auf in Kampung Durian Hijau, Jerantut, Pahang, on Monday, Al-Sultan Abdullah said he welcomed the recent statement by Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, who emphasised that it is the responsibility of leaders to be peacemakers, not instigators of conflict. 'History has shown how racial and religious conflicts, if not handled wisely, can lead to disastrous consequences,' said Al-Sultan Abdullah. 'We must not allow history's darkest moments to repeat themselves due to our failure to manage these sensitive issues with wisdom and prudence. Respect one another and be mindful of religious sensitivities.' 'I urge all leaders, especially political leaders, to act as the bridge to unite the people, not be the instigators. Stop being the clowns by fuelling polemics on the 3R (religion, race, and royalty) issues which could incite conflict within the community.' Al-Sultan Abdullah said the political stage should remain calm and free of unnecessary drama. 'Engage in dialogue with reason and sincerity, rather than resorting to monologues filled with insults and hatred,' he said. Al-Sultan Abdullah also said firm action must be taken by the government and leaders against those who insult and challenge the sanctity of Islam to ensure justice is upheld. 'Is this what we call an independent country? Or is our independence merely in numbers, not in the minds of our people? 'As Muslims, we are taught that the more abundant the harvest, the more the rice stalks bow - a reminder to remain humble in knowledge, respectful in speech, and wise in action,' said Al-Sultan Abdullah. 'However, let not our gentleness and politeness embolden others to disparage our religion as they please. Islam does not teach us to submit to humiliation or oppression.' He added that people of other faiths have the freedom to practise their religions in peace and harmony, as long as they do not threaten public order and the harmony of the country. He was accompanied by other members of the Pahang royal family, including Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, the Crown Prince of Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah, and Tengku Ahmad Ismail Mu'adzam Shah. Al-Sultan Abdullah also presented contributions to the underprivileged during the event.
