UAE: SEWA completes natural gas network in Al Hamriyah

The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA), has announced the 100 percent completion of the natural gas network in Al Hamriyah City—both East and West—according to the highest technical and engineering standards. The total network length exceeds 89 kilometers, with a total cost of AED14 million. This vital project will benefit 1,655 users, enhancing the region's infrastructure and supporting sustainable development in the emirate. The project was implemented in line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, emphasising the need to provide modern and integrated infrastructure for the emirate's residents. Engineer Ibrahim Al Balghouni, Director of the Natural Gas Department at SEWA, stressed that the completion of the network in Al Hamriyah reflects the Authority's dedication to enhancing essential services and addressing the demands of Sharjah's rapid urban development. He characterised the project as a crucial milestone in realising the emirate's vision of providing high-quality services. Al Balghouni added that SEWA continues to expand the natural gas network to cover various regions across Sharjah. The Authority is committed to offering sustainable, environmentally friendly energy solutions by providing clean and economical fuel for residential, commercial, and industrial use.

Sharjah fire: Emergency services at scene after blaze

A fire broke out in Sharjah Industrial Area 6 on Wednesday morning, sending plumes of thick black smoke into the sky. Sharjah Civil Defence extinguished the blaze, which broke out between 6am and 10am. Responders remain on site after the blaze in case of any further outbreaks, given the high temperatures across the Emirates. The fire occurred in a spare parts and furniture warehouse. Police patrols restricted access to the area and the roads leading to the site. Sharjah Civil Defence reported no injuries. The site has been handed to fire experts to determine the cause and assess the damage, authorities added. Emergency responders Wednesday's fire followed a much larger blaze that burned for 24 hours at Sharjah's Al Hamriyah fuel depot earlier this month. Chinook helicopters could be seen unloading gallons of water from buckets on to the flames. Municipalities of Sharjah and Al Hamriyah were involved in the co-ordinated response. The emergency action limited damage to surrounding property, emergency services said. No casualties were reported.

Sharjah fire: Cooling operations underway after massive blaze in Al Hamriyah

Cooling operations are currently underway at Al Hamriyah Port in Sharjah, following a massive fire that took 24 hours to bring under control. The fire broke out at 6.10 am on Saturday and was fully contained by 6.25am on Sunday morning, according to officials. The cooling process aims to prevent any potential flare-ups; once the area is declared safe, forensic and technical teams will be allowed to enter the site and begin investigations into the cause of the fire. Results of the investigations will be announced after all technical assessments. The fire, described as one of the largest industrial blazes in the emirate in recent years, was caused by the ignition of highly flammable petrochemical materials. The intensity of the flames and smoke was such that they could be seen from neighbouring emirates. Authorities responded swiftly, activating a coordinated emergency response that involved local and federal entities. Sharjah Civil Defence deployed advanced firefighting equipment including foam tankers and high-capacity water pumps. The Sharjah Civil Aviation Authority and the Sharjah International Airport Authority provided aerial surveillance using helicopters and air jets to assess the spread and intensity of the fire. Municipal teams from Sharjah and Al Hamriyah supported the operation by supplying water tankers and logistical support. Sharjah Police cordoned off the surrounding areas, evacuated nearby buildings, and managed traffic to ensure public safety. Major General Abdullah Mubarak bin Amer, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police and Chairman of the Local Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management Team, praised the professionalism of the teams involved. 'The rapid response, high-level coordination, and use of specialised equipment played a vital role in bringing the situation under control without casualties,' he said. 'What we witnessed was an integrated national effort.' Key support also came from the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Defence, National Guard, National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA), and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc), all of whom contributed equipment, personnel, and technical expertise.
