MWL chief discusses fatwa unity, youth guidance in London

RIYADH: The Islamic Center in London hosted a meeting between Muslim World League Secretary-General Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa and Islamic leaders from across the UK this week. The discussion focused on the need for wisdom in guiding Muslim communities, especially in the face of provocation by extremists. Speakers stressed the importance of responding with calm and restraint, following the Prophet's example of mercy and patience. Al-Issa highlighted the need for unified religious authority in issuing fatwas and public religious guidance. He announced that the MWL-affiliated Islamic Fiqh Council — a leading body in Islamic jurisprudence — would soon hold a forum at the center to discuss the jurisprudence of Muslim communities. The forum will also explore the creation of a reference framework for this jurisprudence, to be updated as needed. It will review training programs and initiatives in the UK aligned with the Charter of Makkah and propose its inclusion in Islamic education curricula. Al-Issa emphasized protecting Muslim youth from extremist ideologies, noting the family's role, the importance of balanced religious education, qualified teachers, and effective use of platforms such as sermons and lectures. He praised the British Muslim community's awareness and commitment, describing it as a positive example of Islamic values in a diverse society. The meeting included questions and feedback, with attendees expressing support for the MWL's global work. They welcomed Al-Issa's visit, especially given the current context, and appreciated his approach to addressing Islamophobia. Participants also backed the league's efforts to unify local religious authority, citing its success in other minority communities. They viewed this as a long-awaited step, and said that Al-Issa's message strengthened trust in the MWL's mission of promoting social cohesion and peaceful coexistence, values rooted in Islamic teachings.

‘Seek voluntary treatment'

Drug users in Bahrain can avoid prosecution by voluntarily seeking treatment, but face legal action if caught with narcotics in their system, a Bahraini lawyer has said. Marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Jassim Al Issa explained that the law allows addicts or their relatives, up to the fourth degree, to request admission into a rehabilitation centre. In such cases, no criminal case is filed and the addict is treated without being sent to court. Charges 'If the person is caught using, or if traces are found in their blood, then the Public Prosecution brings charges,' he told The Daily Tribune. Al Issa referred to Law No. 15 of 2007, which sets out clear differences between users, promoters and traffickers. Penalties rise sharply depending on the individual's role. Someone found in possession of banned substances for personal use may face a fine of up to BD3,000 or jail time, under Article 32. Article 35 sets a maximum penalty of six months' imprisonment and a BD100 fine for certain acts committed without authorisation. Sterner treatment By contrast, traffickers face much sterner treatment. Offences under Article 30 carry penalties of life imprisonment or death, along with a fine ranging from BD5,000 to BD50,000. These penalties apply to those who import, produce, sell or fund narcotics or restricted plants, whether directly or through others. The law lists types of substances in detailed schedules covering both chemical and botanical forms. Tougher sentencing applies in cases involving repeat offenders, public servants tasked with drug enforcement, the use of minors, involvement in cross-border trafficking, or misuse of legal protection or position. Accidental violations 'The law also addresses banned prescriptions and restricted ingredients in certain medicines,' said Al Issa. 'This helps define what is prohibited and makes it easier to avoid accidental violations.' He urged addicts and their families to make use of the law's provision for voluntary treatment. 'A request can be submitted by the user or by a spouse or close relative. It prevents a criminal record and gives the person a chance to move on,' he said. 'This is far better than court-ordered rehabilitation, which still leads to a case being registered. Even if time spent in the facility is deducted from the sentence, the charge remains.'

MWL chief, UK speaker hold talks on social unity, countering hate speech

LONDON: Secretary-General of the Muslim World League and Chairman of the Organization of Muslim Scholars Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa met UK House of Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle in London. They discussed the foundations of social cohesion in religiously and ethnically diverse societies, highlighting mutual respect and the need for legislation that protects national unity, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Tuesday. The two officials highlighted the importance of combating hate speech, discrimination and exclusion — especially when stemming from influential legal or institutional sources. Al-Issa said that the vast majority of Muslims in Britain show strong religious and national awareness. He added that discordant voices are isolated cases that reflect individual views, not the values of Islam. Separately, the UK parliament hosted Al-Issa for a side meeting at its London headquarters, organized by several members of parliament and attended by the speaker. Talks focused on enhancing integration and harmony in British society, fighting extremism and hatred, and showcasing the league's efforts to build bridges between civilizations and promote mutual understanding.

Muslim World League backs UK, France, Canada statement on Gaza, West Bank

DUBAI: The Muslim World League on Wednesday welcomed the joint statement issued by the UK, France and Canada regarding Israel's war on Gaza and the West Bank. The statement warned of concrete measures, including targeted sanctions, should the Israeli occupation government fail to halt its military operations, stop settlement expansion, and lift restrictions on humanitarian aid. The MWL's Secretary-General Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, who is also chairman of the Muslim Scholars Association, praised the joint stance. In a statement, Al-Issa described it as 'an important and just step in the right direction for the Palestinian people, whose suffering has been prolonged under the killing and destruction machine of the Israeli occupation government.' He urged the international community to fulfill its legal and moral responsibilities by increasing pressure to end the ongoing violations, and for the perpetrators to be held accountable. Al-Issa said the Israeli government should be compelled to immediately comply with UN resolutions and international humanitarian law.
