What Ty Simpson feels Alabama football fans should know about him
Ty Simpson came into Alabama football with dreams to leave a legacy, with aspirations for the NFL. And heading into his fourth season with the program, the Alabama quarterback feels he can still do both. "I think my journey has been like no other, to say the least," Simpson said in a video posted on social media by QB Reps July 22. Simpson is set to enter Alabama's fall camp as the leader in the Crimson Tide's quarterback race, competing for snaps with redshirt sophomore Austin Mack and freshman Keelon Russell. "When I get on the field, Alabama fans should know that I'm going to do everything it takes to win," Simpson said. "So I'm going to make sure I'm the toughest guy on the field. I'm going to make sure I win. I'm going to make sure I know everything that's coming. I'm going to get the guys around me the ball." Simpson, a five-star quarterback in the 2022 recruiting class out of Martin, Tennessee, backed up Bryce Young and Jalen Milroe in his first three seasons with the Crimson Tide. With Alabama, Simpson has completed 29 of his 50 career pass attempts for 381 yards. While he does not have a collegiate passing touchdown, Simpson has three rushing touchdowns on 22 carries. Where Alabama lands in preseason SEC football power rankings
How good will Alabama be in 2025, and will it be enough to carry them back to the College Football Playoff or the SEC Championship Game? USA TODAY Sports college football analyst Paul Myerberg has made an early evaluation of the Crimson Tide and the rest of the SEC with just over a month remaining until the 2025 college football season kicks off. In his preseason SEC football power rankings this week, the veteran college football scribe has Alabama at No. 3 behind Texas and Georgia -- the two teams who met in last year's conference title game. Myerberg said of the Crimson Tide: "It won't hurt to have slightly lower expectations and a somewhat softer spotlight on Kalen DeBoer and the Crimson Tide after winning nine games in his debut. Ty Simpson is expected to take over under center and will operate behind a very strong offensive line with plenty of weapons at his disposal. The defense is the best in the front seven. Overall, this is a very talented team capable of winning the SEC and the national title." Anything related to "lower expectations" for Alabama is highly debatable; expectations for the Crimson Tide are always high. That was true long before Nick Saban, as previous coaches at Alabama can attest all too well. Still, Myerberg's overall point is solid. Alabama does have playmakers -- Ryan Williams being the most explosive on offense, with LT Overton, Tim Keenan, Deontae Lawson, Domani Jackson and others on defense -- that could put them back in the SEC title game or even the national championship if things break their way. Alabama football schedule 2025 Alabama will open the 2025 season against Florida State at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Aug. 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on ABC. Could Alabama football's Florida State opener define 2025 season trajectory?
ATLANTA — Kadyn Proctor knows what Florida State quarterback Thomas Castellanos said. And he's not giving in. It's outside of Alabama football's overall focus, he said, one that is set on the day-to-day, the current moment. The Crimson Tide hasn't made it to fall camp yet, Proctor said. 'We're not really giving into whatever anybody else is saying,' Proctor said at SEC media days. 'It's all internal. Keeping it in house.' Kalen DeBoer knows how big Alabama's opener against Florida State is. It's the only game the Crimson Tide coach brought up unprompted. It's a test against a team that has 'something to prove, as well.' It's a true road game, a setting Alabama struggled with in its first year of the DeBoer era with losses to Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Oklahoma away from Tuscaloosa. But to DeBoer, it all boils down to one simple reality: Florida State is first up for Alabama. It's the opponent currently in the way of each of the Crimson Tides 2025 hopes. 'We don't need to look anything beyond that as far as our preparation or what might lie because none of it matters unless we take care of business and do what we're doing, being our best in that week one game against Florida State,' DeBoer said. For fifth-year defensive lineman Tim Keenan III, Florida State is Alabama's first chance to debut the new-and-improved Crimson Tide: one that is dominant, that plays to the whistle, that gives opponents a beating. 'Just taking it to the next man the best we can, as hard as we can,' Keenan said. It's what Alabama did not do in 2024, falling to both the Volunteers and Commodores by one score before a 21-point drubbing against the Sooners in Norman. 'A lot of it comes down to those big moments, building a culture where you keep fighting till the very end,' DeBoer said. 'There's going to be a lot of close games. A lot of those wins you're talking about came down to the very end, moments where it looked bleak at times. You fight, execute, find a way to win. That's what we've got to do here going into year two at Alabama, as well.' Expectations are high for Alabama. And they are self-imposed. Proctor said the whole roster realizes how long it's been since the Crimson Tide won a championship. And the junior offensive lineman is not afraid to say that's the team's overall goal. 'It's all through preparation,' Proctor said. 'We're trying to do our best 1-0 day in and day out, honestly. But there's always that hunger, that yearn and burn and desire to win every game. You have to have that focus and that level of intent to do so.' Florida State is just the first team in Alabama's way.
