Alas Pilipinas crushes Australia for back-to-back VTV Cup wins
Alas Pilipinas Women showed all its cards to deliver a commanding 25-13, 25-15, 25-20 win against Australia and remain hot in the 2025 VTV Cup on Tuesday in Vietnam. The Filipinas have now captured their second straight win after opening their campaign with a gallant three-set loss to powerhouse Vietnam the other day. National team rookie Alleiah Malaluan made some big points in the third set, going for the kill from the open side to give the Philippines a 12-8 lead before Dell Palomata unleashed an ace to make it a 14-10 advantage. Malaluan then went for a soft touch on the opposite side while team captain Jia De Guzman got help from the net on her easy return that allowed Alas to secure a 16-11 cushion. The opposing side tried to mount a rally with a 3-1 run but substitute setter Tia Andaya showed just how deep the Philippine bench is, rejecting an Australia attack before setting up Vanie Gandler for the back row hammer, 22-15. Malaluan's cross court kill sent Alas to match point before she connived with her La Salle teammate Amie Provido in clinching the game-winning block. Alas now heads to the quarterfinals with its next foe yet to be determined. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

PVL: Prized setter Mars Alba parts ways with Choco Mucho
Mars Alba is set to open a new chapter in her career as the versatile setter parted ways with the Choco Mucho Flying Titans after almost two years since joining the club. Choco Mucho announced the development on Monday amid its ongoing campaign in the PVL On Tour and Alba's current stint with Alas Pilipinas Women in the VTV Cup in Vietnam. "Your exceptional playmaking and court smarts will remain significant contributions to the team. You'll always be a Titan. Good luck on your next chapter," Choco Mucho said in a Facebook post. Alba, a former setter for De La Salle University in the UAAP, joined Choco Mucho in January 2024 after her previous club F2 Logistics announced its disbandment. She, alongside libero Bia General and spiker Mean Mendrez, bolstered the Flying Titans following the departures of Denden Lazaro-Revilla, Caitlyn Viray, and Bea De Leon. With Alba's exit, Choco Mucho will still have Deanna Wong as well as rookie Tia Andaya as their main playmakers for the 2025 season. —Bea Micaller/JMB, GMA Integrated News

Alas Pilipinas Women falter vs. Vietnam to end dream run in AVC Nations Cup with silver
Alas Pilipinas Women's fairytale run at the 2025 AVC Women's Volleyball Nations Cup ended with a silver medal after they fell to Vietnam, 25-15, 25-17, 25-14 in the championship round on Saturday at the Dong anh Gymnasium in Hanoi, Vietnam. The Filipinas simply had no answer to the tandem of Bich Tuyen and Tran Thi Thanh Thuy as the hosts, who dropped just one set throughout the tournament, turned the game into a one-sided affair to claim their third straight title. The Filipinas, meanwhile, capped off their campaign at second place but with plenty of lessons moving forward. Tuyen led the way with 20 points anchored on 16 attacks, two blocks and two aces while Thuy, famously called T4, tallied 17 markers on 13 attacks, three blocks, and one ace as they defended their home turf. T4 and Tuyen wasted no time making their presence felt as they sent Vietnam to a 16-8 lead in the opening set before T4 wrapped it up with back-to-back hits from the open. Alas kept it close early in the second set with Bella Belen tying things up at 10-all. But the reigning champions were quick to retaliate, answering with a pivotal 11-3 rampage — a stretch that saw the hosts unloading two aces from Tuyen to create a 21-13 lead. World no. 28 Vietnam refused to look back since then as they pulled away for good in Set 3. T4 soared from the pipe and punished Alas' floor defense to send Vietnam to a 14-7 cushion while another Tuyen and T4 took turns to put the punctuation in what has been a dominant showing from the hosts. No Alas player managed to reach a double-digit mark with Alyssa Solomon churning out eight points while Shaina Nitura, who was injected late in their comeback attempt, finished with six markers. Young guns show up as Alas Pilipinas escapes Indonesia for 2-0 start
Youngsters took matters into their own hands to tow Alas Pilipinas Women to a 22-25, 25-23, 25-13, 28-26, to remain unblemished in the 2025 AVC Women's Volleyball Nations Cup on Sunday at the Dong anh Gymnasium in Hanoi, Vietnam. Alyssa Solomon, who was fielded for the first time in the tournament, proved her worth by leading the charge on her 17-point outing anchored on 10 attacks, four blocks, and three aces to help the Filipinas cruise to a 2-0 start in Pool B. The former NU star got ample help from her teammates with fellow youngster Angel Canino and Bella Belen chipping in 15 and 12 markers apiece in the hard-fought win. The Indonesians fell to a 0-2 win-loss card. Alas raced to the first match point when Fifi Sharma unleashed a strong kill from the middle, giving the world no. 50 Philippines a 24-23 lead in the fourth set. But Indonesia staged a comeback attempt with Ersandrina Devega dropping a soft touch on the open side and Canino committing an attack error as the opposing side took their own match point at 25-24. Canino, though, atoned for that mistake by converting two consecutive attacks that allowed a youth-laden Alas to take another match point at 27-26. Shaina Nitura put the punctuation, going for an off-the-block kill to seal it for the nationals. The Filipinas will look to preserve their unbeaten run when they take on world no. 56 Iran on Monday. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
