Spain FM Albares calls for suspending EU-Israel association agreement
CAIRO – 23 June 2025: Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs José Manuel Albares called on Monday for an immediate suspension of the EU-Israel association agreement to protest against human rights violations in Gaza. 'The times of words and declarations is behind' Albares said, adding that 'Palestinians in Gaza have no more time to lose.' 'If the association agreement is based on human rights, it's the most normal thing that we suspend immediately today that association agreement and that we move forward. That's why I will ask for the suspension of the association agreement, an embargo of selling weapons to Israel, and enlarging the list of people that are being sanctioned to everyone that wants to be a spoiler of the two-state solution.' The Spanish minister said upon arrival to EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels on Monday. The Spanish minister added that Europe 'must show courage in favour of peace, of international law' and defend the values it is meant to stand up for.'

Spain evacuates citizens from Iran
20/06/2025 LOC10:27 07:27 GMT Spanish Foreign Ministry MADRID, June 20 (KUNA) -- Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said Friday that more than 40 Spaniards have been evacuated from Tehran due to the regional military escalation and instability. "The first phase of the evacuation of Spaniards has concluded successfully," Albares told reporters, adding that the Spaniards, including residents and transients, in Tehran have happily crossed the border with Armenia." "There are just over 40 Spaniards, as well as some citizens of other nationalities," he said, hoping that in a few hours they would be flying to Spain, where they could be reunited with their families. Speaking to Bloomberg TV, Albares stressed the EU's responsibility in light of its strong economic ties with Israel. "The European Union is Israel's largest trading partner in the world. We must impose an arms embargo, not sell weapons to Israel while this war continues," he said, as reported by Spanish daily El Pais. Albares expressed deep concern over the lack of de-escalation between Israel and Iran, warning that the ongoing hostilities pose a serious threat to regional stability. He also emphasised the importance of reviving diplomatic dialogue with Iran regarding its nuclear activities, underscoring Spain's commitment to non-proliferation and regional peace. Tensions in the Middle East have intensified since Friday, following Israeli airstrikes targeting several locations across Iran, including military and nuclear sites, which triggered retaliatory attacks from Tehran.
