Motorcyclist dies in Beaufort mishap

BEAUFORT: A motorcyclist without a valid licence was killed in a head-on collision while attempting to overtake a trailer along KM23 of the Beaufort-Sipitang road near Kampung Lingkungan, last Sunday. The victim, Albert Lande, 25, from Penampang, was pronounced dead at the scene following the 1.30pm incident.
Advertisement Beaufort District Police Chief Supt Wong Leong Meng said initial investigation revealed the victim was attempting to overtake a long vehicle but crashed into an oncoming car. 'The motorcycle collided with a vehicle travelling from Beaufort to Sipitang when the rider tried to overtake a trailer from the opposite direction,' he said. The driver of the vehicle involved, Amira Ag Damit, 30, a Bruneian teacher, was unharmed. Further checks revealed that the victim was not licensed to ride a motorcycle. 'Due to the short distance and oncoming traffic, the collision was unavoidable,' Wong said. Police were notified of the fatality by the Emergency Unit at Beaufort Hospital around 5pm, after the victim was confirmed dead by medical staff.
