Two killed in expressway crashes near Northbrook, Glencoe
Crashes on the I-94 expressway in the northern Chicago suburbs claimed two lives during and just after the July Fourth weekend, per Illinois State Police. The first fatal crash occurred in the early hours of Sunday, at about 2:52 a.m., in the northbound lanes of I-94 near Tower Road near Glencoe, according to Trooper Jason Wilson, a public relations officer for the state police. Troopers responded after getting a report of a four-vehicle personal injury crash involving a red Pontiac, black Hyundai, white Jeep, and a gray Tesla, he said, adding that at least one female passenger was taken to a local hospital with injuries. Alejandro Hernandez, 32, of Chicago, was also taken from the scene, with injuries, to a local area hospital where he was pronounced dead, Wilson said. Multiple lanes were closed for the crash investigation, he said, and all lanes were reopened at 9:08 a.m. The crash remains under investigation, he added. On Monday, July 7, the southbound lanes of I-94 were shut down for about four hours after Illinois State Police responded at about 12:30 p.m. to a crash in the southbound lanes near milepost 40, which is near Dundee Road and Route 41 in Northbrook, per Trooper Caleb Billingsley, a state police public information officer. One occupant of a vehicle was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital, he said. At approximately 1:27 p.m., law enforcement closed the southbound lanes for the investigation and traffic was diverted to I-294, Billingsley said. All lanes were reopened at approximately 5:41 p.m. The state police are continuing their investigation, he said Tuesday morning.

VAR audio ‘picks up suspicious 'thank goodness' after Barcelona goal vs Real Madrid is ruled out for handball'
EL CLASICO has been rocked by a VAR controversy after an official appeared to say "thank goodness" during a goal review. Barcelona beat rivals Real Madrid 4-3 in a thrilling LaLiga showdown on Sunday night. 2 2 The Catalan giants stretched their lead at the top of the table to seven points with victory at the Nou Camp. But the hosts were denied a fifth goal in stoppage time as Fermin Lopez 's strike was chalked off for a handball in the build-up. Referee Alejandro Hernández Hernández was advised by VAR official Juan Martínez Munuera to review the footage on the pitchside monitor. In audio released by RFEF, Munuera said: "Listen to me, Alex, we've just detected a handball, okay? Please come take a look." An unknown voice in the VAR room was then heard saying: "Given the height - thank goodness [menos mal]. Yes, yes, totally." Hernandez replied: "Okay, perfect. Let's continue. It hits his hand, yes. "The ball's going out. Now give me a wide angle so I can see the entire action and how it ends. "Okay, perfect. The hand is clearly raised. I'm going to disallow the goal." Mundo Deportivo claim the 'thank goodness' comment "was not transcribed or subtitled by the RFEF" in the video released to the public. It followed a match dogged by referee controversy, with Barca feeling stung by the decisions. Injured Barcelona star fails to go incognito as he takes budget flight with fans to Champions League semi-final vs Inter Kylian Mbappe appeared to be marginally offside before Madrid won a penalty early in the contest. And the league leaders were fuming after Aurelien Tchouameni was not punished for handball in the area moments before Lopez's strike. Despite the controversy, Barcelona took control of the LaLiga title race with the 4-3 win. Mbappe struck a hat-trick for Los Blancos, who had led 2-0 after just 14 minutes. But Hansi Flick's side stormed back with four goals before half time from Eric Garcia, Lamine Yamal and Raphinha. Barcelona will secure top spot as early as Wednesday night if Madrid fail to beat Real Mallorca. Should Madrid win, Barcelona could win LaLiga the following day when they face Espanyol in the Catalan derby.

Experienced Referee Appointed For FC Barcelona Vs Real Madrid Clásico
Referee, Alejandro Jose Hernandez Hernandez, has been appointed for the Clásico between Barcelona ... More and Real Madrid on Sunday, May 11th. The Spanish Soccer Federation (RFEF) has announced that 42-year-old referee Alejandro Hernández Hernández will take charge of the Clásico on Sunday, May 11th, between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. The game could decide the title, with only four points between the two teams and four games remaining, meaning that all eyes will be on the man in the middle, who will referee his 30th game of the 2024/25 season. From Lanzarote, Hernández Hernández has refereed 434 senior fixtures in his career, including 234 in La Liga. He is also a FIFA referee, and has taken charge of 17 international fixtures during his career. He will be assisted by another 42-year-old referee, Juan Martínez Munuera, on VAR duties. He too has 200 league matches under his belt as a referee. He has refereed four Clásicos himself, which have ended with three Real Madrid wins, including most recently the 2023/24 Spanish Super Cup final, and one victory for Barcelona. This will be Hernández Hernández's fifth Clásico as a referee, and his first in five years. The last time was a 0-0 draw in December 2019, when Ernesto Valverde and Zinedine Zidane were in charge of the two teams as they met at Camp Nou with three yellow cards for Barcelona and five for Real Madrid. Before that, he oversaw a 2-2 draw in May 2018, which included a red card for Barcelona's Sergi Roberto, and one win for each team. In April 2017, Hernández Hernández sent off Sergio Ramos for Real Madrid at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu as Lionel Messi scored in injury time to seal a 3-2 victory for Barcelona. His first Clásico saw Ramos also sent off, though for two yellow cards on this occasion, as Real Madrid came from behind to win 2-1 at Camp Nou. Barcelona has won 57% of their 37 matches with Hernández Hernández in charge, losing only four, while Real Madrid's win rate is exactly the same at 57%, though they have lost nine of their 35 games with him in the middle. The veteran referee has shown both teams a grand total of four red cards each, while he has awarded Barcelona 10 penalties, compared to only nine in favor of Real Madrid. As with many referees in Spanish soccer, Hernández Hernández was subject to a video reviewing his performances with Real Madrid by the club's official television channel. In September 2024, a commentator on the channel said, 'he's a clear indication of a problem in the system, he goes from mistake to mistake and he continues to progress, referee Clásicos and all sorts'. Reacting to the videos in the past, Hernández Hernández told COPE, carried by Sport and MARCA, 'I've been refereeing for 30 years and it doesn't affect us. It is not the perfect scenario to referee, because of the tension that is generated. This affects grassroots soccer because it makes the referee look like an enemy. I've been told outrageous things and I'm always upset about it'.
