Trump's border miracle: From Biden's chaotic immigration crisis to 'all quiet' in record time

"All Quiet on the Western Front" is the title of Erich Maria Remarque's moving World War I novel. As of July 2025, it's all quiet on the U.S. southern border. How quiet? In June, the Border Patrol encountered just over 6,000 inadmissible aliens at ports of entry. Under President Joe Biden, they sometimes saw twice that many in a single day. The total number of inadmissible aliens encountered in June, at both our northern and southern borders, at or between ports of entry, was 25,243 – the lowest monthly total in U.S. history. And of all those encountered in June, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released zero - for the second month in a row. In May, DHS also released not a single alien they stopped trying to enter the United States illegally. In May 2024, in contrast, they released at least 62,000 – not counting more than 30,000 inadmissible aliens they let in every month using immigration parole, and thousands more "gotaways" who snuck in without being stopped or identified. Other than abusing parole, the Biden administration disguised the entry of millions of inadmissible aliens into our country through catch-and-release: detain them for a few hours, do cursory data entry, then move them inside where they are hard to find and deport later. Former Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas testified in December 2023 that DHS was releasing upwards of 85% of aliens caught entering illegally. That was the worst month for encounters of inadmissible aliens on the southern border in U.S. history – 251,178. That means around 213,500 were likely released – about 10 times the TOTAL number of aliens encountered last month on all our borders combined. More inadmissible, unidentified aliens were released, in one month, than the current population of Tallahassee, Florida. Making it hard for a future president to restore the rule of law was part of the plan – and now, the legacy media is doing its part by painting routine law enforcement as authoritarian excess. Under President Donald Trump, aliens entering without permission are mostly being detained pending the completion of their due immigration process – as the law explicitly requires. In some cases, that will mean an expedited removal process under the Immigration and Nationality Act. But many more will exploit our overly generous and backed-up asylum process to slow things down. Reportedly, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will no longer allow routine bond hearings for aliens to ask an immigration judge to release them pending their process. Why? Because, when detained, aliens always show up for each hearing. They want it done quickly, especially if they know they have no credible asylum case. When let loose in the country, free to work, aliens want to drag it out. Many don't show up for their immigration court dates. In Biden's term, more than half a million aliens didn't show up for their removal hearings. Detaining illegal aliens throughout their entire process means that if the result is an order for their removal (that is, deportation to their home country or another that will take them), the judge's decision can be carried out quickly and safely. If they're released into the U.S. interior, it takes time and staff to find and re-arrest them later. Speed and efficiency are in everyone's interest, and in normal times, an expedited removal case should take only a few weeks from start to finish. Asylum cases can take longer, especially with appeals, but that should still mean only months, not years. The pace has slowed in recent years due to the massive backlog caused by unchecked illegal entry and meritless asylum claims. But the Big Beautiful Bill has $170 billion to hire 300 more immigration judges and more DHS staff, increase detention capacity to 100,000, and more. Increased detention will remove incentives for aliens to make baseless claims. Trump ended catch-and-release as the default policy for inadmissible aliens. He closed the supposed "lawful pathways" of parole and government encouragement of asylum claims. He reinstated 'Remain in Mexico' and agreements with safe third countries to take deported aliens. He resumed building a wall to impede easy crossing of the border with Mexico. And Trump stopped funding the web of activist NGOs that got fat from facilitating mass illegal migration. Making it hard for a future president to restore the rule of law was part of the plan – and now, the legacy media is doing its part by painting routine law enforcement as authoritarian excess. Equally important, Trump had the fortitude to back federal agents in doing their duty. Under Biden, ICE was told to ignore most illegal immigrants – just like police are obliged by politicians to look the other way in our big cities when it comes to myriad crimes that undermine the quality of life for everyone. Now, agents are out doing their jobs, enforcing federal law. The media and some politicians are apoplectic to see that it's working. While Biden complained of invisible forces beyond his control, or asked for more money or new laws from Congress, Trump acted. He withdrew the red carpet for the world's inadmissible economic migrants, and they stopped coming. Even if most media outlets pretend to be perplexed at the relationship between policy and result, Americans can link cause and effect, and let's hope they get used to it. Then they will never allow a future president – of either party – to abandon his duties and throw open the border again.

Trump Threatens to Arrest 2 Political Opponents in Same Press Conference, Hours After Entertaining Elon Musk Deportation

President Donald Trump threatened two left-leaning politicians in the same press conference on Tuesday, July 1 While speaking with reporters, Trump called N.Y.C. mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani a "communist," questioned his citizenship, and threatened to jail him if he wins the November election and interferes with ICE arrests The president also pondered prison time for Joe Biden's former homeland security secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, who was impeached in 2024 by the Republican-led HousePresident Donald Trump went on several tirades about former friends and political opponents alike on Tuesday, July 1, even threatening to jail a rising political star and a former Biden Cabinet member. After touring a new detention facility for detainees of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Florida, Trump sat down with reporters at "Alligator Alcatraz" to answer a few questions. Asked about New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani — who had just officially earned the Democratic nomination on Tuesday — the president said, 'A lot of people are saying he's here illegally." Mamdani, 33, was born in Uganda and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018. He defeated former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in a major election upset as a self-described Democratic Socialist, which also earned Trump's ire. 'We don't need a communist in this country," he said. "But if we have one, I'm going to be watching over him very carefully on behalf of the nation... We're going to look at everything.' Trump was also asked about Mamdani's campaign promises to "stop masked ICE agents from deporting our neighbors." His response? 'Well then, we'll have to arrest him.' Mamdani later responded to Trump's claims, saying, "His statements don't just represent an attack on our democracy, but an attempt to send a message to every New Yorker who refuses to hide in the shadows: If you speak up, they will come for you. We will not accept this intimidation." Trump also threatened to jail another political foe, former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who held the role from 2021 to 2025 under President Joe Biden. Mayorkas was successfully impeached by the Republican-led House of Representatives in January 2024 over claims that he was personally responsible for an uptick in illegal border crossings. At the time, DHS called the impeachment proceedings "a distraction from other vital national security priorities and the work Congress should be doing to actually fix our broken immigration laws." Mayorkas was later acquitted by the Senate. Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. Nevertheless, Trump used the impeachment as a talking point during his 2024 presidential campaign, and criticized him once again on Tuesday when a reporter asked why Mayorkas hadn't faced further consequences, including imprisonment. Trump responded that Biden gave preemptive pardons to some of his allies, and that he couldn't remember if Mayorkas was one of them. The reporter informed Trump that Mayorkas was not covered in the pardons, and therefore could be prosecuted. "If he wasn't given a pardon, I could see looking at that," Trump said, before asking current Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to "take a look at it." "What he did is beyond incompetent. Something had to be done," he added. 'I'll take a look at that one." Trump's latest tirades against Mamdani and Mayorkas came just a few hours after he rekindled his feud with Elon Musk over the tech billionaire's criticism of the president's expansive budget bill. In a lengthy rant posted to Truth Social, Trump threatened to use the Department of Government Efficiency against its former leader to reevaluate Musk's government aid. "Elon may get more [subsidies] than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa," the post said. "No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE." While speaking to reporters later, Trump mocked: "DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon. Wouldn't that be terrible?" He also told reporters that he doesn't know yet if he would try to deport Musk, who became an American citizen in 2002, adding, "We'll have to take a look." Read the original article on People

GOP Rep McCaul urges Trump admin to prioritize 'aggravated felons' when detaining illegal immigrants

Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, said Sunday that President Donald Trump's administration should prioritize detaining illegal immigrants who are "aggravated felons," while defending the government's efforts to restore "sanity" to that aspect of homeland security. On "Face the Nation," CBS anchor Margaret Brennan quoted a report from The Independent stating 47 percent of the 59,000 detained migrants in the U.S. didn't have a criminal record, and fewer than 30 percent had been convicted of crimes. "These aren't the worst of the worst," she said. "I was a federal prosecutor for many years, counterterrorism. You have to prioritize, right?" McCaul said. "I would prioritize the aggravated felons that [Biden DHS Secretary Alejandro] Mayorkas let in, in defiance of federal law. It was 'shall detain.' He said, 'may detain,' and let them out into the streets. I would prioritize that first." "So you would prefer that Homeland Security prioritize them and not run up the numbers the way they are in this [way] that I described?" Brennan asked. "Well, I think they're running the numbers up because 15 to 20 million people came in under the Biden administration, and they're trying to get some sanity involved in the United States," McCaul said. "And I think deterrence is the key here. And Margaret, it is working. You know, the apprehension rate at the border, and Texas is the biggest one, has gone down to almost zero." The border is just about secure, McFaul said, pointing to the end of "catch and release" with the return of Trump to power. The Trump administration has pushed back against and lashed out at the media over the notion that most of the illegal immigrants who've been arrested this year haven't been convicted or charged with a crime. "Under the Trump Administration, 70% of illegal aliens arrested have been convicted or charged with a crime beyond illegally entering our country," DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said this week in a release about DHS operations capturing illegal immigrants in Los Angeles. "As bad faith politicians attempt to demean and vilify our brave law enforcement, we will only double down and ramp up our enforcement actions against the worst of the worst criminals."

Mark Green says he'll retire from House after megabill vote

Rep. Mark Green said Monday he plans to resign from Congress after four terms to accept a private-sector job offer. The Tennessee Republican and Homeland Security Committee chair said his retirement would begin after the House votes again on the GOP's domestic-policy megabill now under consideration in the Senate. 'I am grateful to Speaker Johnson and House Leadership for placing their trust in me to chair the Committee on Homeland Security, lead the effort to impeach former Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas' and pass border legislation, Green said in a statement. 'However, my time in Congress has come to an end.' Advertisement Green announced last year he would retire but then reentered the race. Shortly before the election, his wife went public with allegations of an extramarital affair, which POLITICO corroborated.

Homeland security chair to leave Congress after House votes on Trump agenda bill

GOP Rep. Mark Green, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, announced Monday that he intends to leave Congress after the House votes again on President Donald Trump's sweeping domestic policy package. 'It is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement from Congress. Recently, I was offered an opportunity in the private sector that was too exciting to pass up,' the Tennessee Republican said in a statement Monday. 'As a result, today I notified the Speaker and the House of Representatives that I will resign from Congress as soon as the House votes once again on the reconciliation package.' Green will be resigning in the middle of the 119th Congress, and his term was set to end after the 2026 midterm elections. A former Tennessee state senator and an emergency physician, Green was first elected to Congress in 2018. He became chairman of the Homeland Security panel in his third term in 2023, and he led House Republicans' impeachment of former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Green is also a retired Army flight surgeon. He was involved in the raid that captured former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, and he interrogated him after his capture, according to his House biography. In 2017, Green was Trump's pick to be Army secretary in his first term, but he withdrew his name from consideration following a backlash after his past controversial statements on LGBT issues, Islam and evolution resurfaced. Green said in the statement there will be a special election to replace him.
