Malcolm-Jamal Warner, acclaimed star of 'The Cosby Show' dies at 54 following a drowning incident

Malcolm-Jamal Warner, best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, has died at the age of 54 following a tragic drowning incident. A source confirmed to People that the actor passed away while on a family vacation in Costa Rica. According to the report, Warner drowned while swimming during the trip. His representative has not yet commented publicly. Warner is survived by his wife and daughter, whose names he chose to keep private throughout his life, maintaining a level of privacy around his family. Warner rose to fame in the 1980s with his breakout role on The Cosby Show, playing the only son of Cliff Huxtable (Bill Cosby). The character, Theo, was loosely based on Cosby's real-life son, Ennis, and shared storylines that included a diagnosis of dyslexia. Warner's performance earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 1986. After the series ended in 1992, Warner continued his acting career with notable roles in sitcoms like Malcolm & Eddie (1996–2000), Reed Between the Lines (2011–2015), and drama series including The Resident, Major Crimes, and Suits. His recent credits included appearances in 9-1-1 and Alert: Missing Persons Unit. Beyond television, Warner also co-hosted a podcast titled Not All Hood, which he launched in June 2023 with Weusi Baraka and Candace Kelley. The project focused on mental health within the Black community, offering what Warner described as 'a space to be vulnerable' and explore diverse Black experiences. In a 2023 interview with People, Warner reflected on The Cosby Show's complicated legacy, acknowledging the controversy surrounding Bill Cosby while expressing pride in the show's cultural impact. 'Regardless of how some people may feel about the show now,' he said, 'I'm still proud of the legacy and having been a part of such an iconic show.' Warner's death marks the loss of a respected actor and cultural figure whose work resonated across generations.

‘Alert' & ‘The Cleaning Lady' Canceled By Fox

Fox has determined the fate of two bubble shows, canceling dramas Alert: Missing Persons Unit after three seasons and The Cleaning Lady after four. The network had delayed final decisions on its remaining bubble series until after their current seasons had aired. Alert wrapped its Season 3 run on May 27, and The Cleaning Lady's fourth season ended on June 3. More from Deadline 2025 TV Cancellations: Photo Gallery 2025 Premiere Dates For New & Returning Series On Broadcast, Cable & Streaming Ex-'Doctor Odyssey' Crew Members Sue Disney, 20th TV Claiming Sexual Harassment And Wrongful Termination The cancellations do not come as a surprise as Alert, The Cleaning Lady as well as the other two Fox scripted series not picked up for next season, Accused and The Great North, sit at the bottom of the network's 2024-25 season rankings. Animated comedy The Great North also is expected to be canceled once its current fifth season ends later this month. As for anthology Accused, developed and executive produced by Howard Gordon, it might come back in the future for a limited run as an event, Michael Thorn, President of Fox Television Network, said last month. RELATED: 'We love the show and Howard Gordon,' he said. 'As you know, it's anthological, which means it doesn't have the same timetable on renewals as shows that have locked casts. And so right now, we're talking with Howard if there's an opportunity down the line to eventize a return, something that can really work for us and Howard, we'd love to do it. Right now. there's no plan, but there could be down the line.' All four series are Fox Entertainment co-productions with outside lead studios, Warner Bros. TV (The Cleaning Lady), Sony Pictures TV (Alert, Accused) and 20th Television Animation (The Great North). With Sony TV, Fox also has its breakout new medical drama series Doc, which is coming back in the fall for a 22-episode season; Warner Bros. TV is behind Fox's upcoming thriller drama Memory of a Killer. According to sources, Fox explored continuing Alert, possibly with some retooling, as the network brass liked Scott Caan as a leading man and the show's evolution into a buddy-cop show. Ultimately, the ratings were not there. RELATED: The Cleaning Lady, headlined by Élodie Yung, underwent creative retooling heading into this season after the series faced the tragic loss of its male lead Adan Canto to cancer. The drama never regained its footing but maintained a passionate core fan base that is left with loose ends and unresolved issues in the Season 4 finale. Alert: Missing Persons Unit is set in the Philadelphia Police Department's Missing Persons Unit. Each episode featured a search for a missing person headed by detectives Jason Grant (Caan) and Nikki Batista (Dania Ramirez). Together with the MPU team, their job is to find the missing or abducted and reunite them with their loved ones. Adeola Role, Ryan Broussard and Alisha-Marie Ahamed also starred. Carla Kettner served as showrunner and executive producer, with Jon Cowan, Brandon Sonnier, Brandon Margolis, Sean Hennen, John Eisendrath, Jamie Foxx, Datari Turner and Brad Turner also executive producing. RELATED: The Cleaning Lady, the first Southeast Asian-led broadcast drama, centers on Thony De La Rosa (Yung), a Cambodian-Filipino former surgeon who makes a living as a cleaning service worker alongside her sister-in-law, Fiona (Martha Millan). After witnessing a murder, Thony is offered a job both as a cleaner and a doctor within a criminal organization that could pay well enough to help her son and her family. Kate Del Castillo, Santiago Cabrera, Sean Lew, Faith Bryant, and Khalen Roman Sanchez also starred in the series, based on an Argentine format, which was developed for American television by Miranda Kwok. Scott Caan and Elizabeth Debicki Join Brad Pitt in David Fincher's Next Untitled Project

Actors Scott Caan and Elizabeth Debicki have joined Brad Pitt in an upcoming Netflix film, whose details remain largely under wraps. The project centers around Cliff Booth, the stuntman character portrayed by Pitt in Quentin Tarantino's 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. This new story is set in a later time period than the original movie. While details are tightly guarded, sources say the film draws from a script Tarantino wrote but chose not to direct. Pitt reportedly convinced him to let director David Fincher take over the project, which was greenlit earlier this year. The film's storyline may include elements from Tarantino's 2021 novel, which expanded on Cliff Booth's backstory, including the controversial death of his wife. However, it is unclear how closely the movie will follow the book. Debicki and Caan's roles have not been confirmed. Sources suggest the script includes two major female characters — one running a bar and mud wrestling venue, and another described as a trophy wife — but it's unknown whether Debicki will play either of these roles. For Caan, this marks a reunion with Pitt, having worked together in the Ocean's Eleven trilogy. Production is expected to begin in California this July. Netflix has not released any official statements regarding the new cast members. Scott Caan, son of late actor James Caan, is known for his work in television, including CBS's Hawaii Five-0 and Fox's Alert: Missing Persons Unit. His film credits include Varsity Blues and Gone in 60 Seconds. Elizabeth Debicki gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of Princess Diana in Netflix's The Crown. She has also appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Tenet, and the upcoming Maxxxine. Both actors are represented by CAA, with Caan also managed by Linden Entertainment and Sloane Offer.

‘Accused' Season 3 Still in Limbo, Fox Says It's Open to More Episodes

Just because Fox doesn't have a plan to renew Howard Gordon's 'Accused' at the moment, that doesn't mean that won't change in the future. The network addressed the renewal hopes of 'Accused' as well as other on-the-bubble shows 'The Cleaning Lady,' 'Alert: Missing Persons Unit' and 'The Great North' during a conference call with press ahead of its 2025 advertiser upfront presentation. 'As you know, ['Accused'] is anthological, which means it doesn't have the same timetable for renewals as shows that have locked cast. So right now, we're talking with Howard,' Michael Thorn, President of Fox Television Network for Fox Entertainment, said. 'If there's an opportunity down the line to event-ize a return that can really work for us and Howard, we'd love to do it. Right now, there's no plan, but there could be down the line.' The anthology drama first premiered in 2023 and aired its second season on 2024. Each episode of 'Accused' follows a completely different court case with an entirely different cast as it explores one of the most stressful moments in the lives of ordinary people. Thorn also provided an update on 'The Cleaning Lady,' which is currently airing its fourth season, as well as 'Alert: Missing Persons Unit' and 'The Great North.' The police procedural from John Eisendrath and Jamie Foxx is currently airing its third season, and the animated comedy from Wendy Molyneux, Lizzie Molyneux and Minty Lewis is airing its fifth season. 'We love the teams and those shows, and I think there'll be more to come after they finish their current seasons. As you know, we order series all year round. The upfront for us is one cycle of ordering, and there will definitely be more [ordering] sometime, probably later this summer,' Thorn said.
