Red Sox rumors: Alex Bregman drops off ESPN's top trade candidates list
The post Red Sox rumors: Alex Bregman drops off ESPN's top trade candidates list appeared first on ClutchPoints. The MLB trade deadline is less than two weeks away, and when it comes, you shouldn't expect the Boston Red Sox to deal Alex Bregman. Once seen as deadline sellers, Boston entered the All-Star Break on a 10-game winning streak, catapulting the team into playoff contention. When ESPN updated its top 50 trade candidates on Monday, Bregman was notably absent. The story comes three days after Jeff Passan, who co-wrote the piece, poured cold water on a potential Bregman trade. 'Now that Boston is firmly in playoff contention,' Passan wrote, 'Alex Bregman is almost certainly off the table.' Bregman is in his first season with the Red Sox after signing a three-year, $120 million contract in the offseason. Named a 2025 American League All-Star, Bregman is hitting .294 with a .921 OPS in 56 games after missing about seven weeks with a quad injury. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal seems to agree that a Bregman trade is unlikely. 'Finding the appropriate value for Bregman in a trade would be difficult if not impossible,' he wrote before the break. 'Executives talk all the time about how difficult it is to line up even on minor deals. Bregman's contract, which gives him the ability to opt in to $40 million salaries in both 2026 and '27, would complicate matters considerably.' Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran could be on the move While Bregman is likely staying in Boston, Jarren Duran might not. ESPN gave him a 25 percent chance of moving, citing the team's outfield depth with Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu in tow. It makes Duran expendable as the team looks to upgrade elsewhere. 'Duran had a huge breakout season in 2024, posting the seventh-best fWAR in the majors at 6.8,' the story reads. 'He overperformed his underlying metrics, though — i.e., had some lucky outcomes — and those metrics have regressed a bit this year. Now, he's underperforming them — he has been unlucky — so his true talent is somewhere south of that star-level figure but better than the roughly 2 WAR (commensurate with a solid regular) he's on pace for this season.' ESPN lists Boston as likely suitors for some of the big-name starting pitchers on the market, including Sandy Alcantara (Miami Marlins) and Kris Bubic (Kansas City Royals). Alex Bregman directs Red Sox's focus away from trade deadline
The post Alex Bregman directs Red Sox's focus away from trade deadline appeared first on ClutchPoints. After battling back into playoff contention with a 10-game winning streak at the beginning of July, the Boston Red Sox have now lost five of their last seven matchups. With trade rumors swirling as the deadline approaches, Alex Bregman is doing his best to help the team avoid distractions. 'Us as players should just focus on what we can control and focus on the next pitch in front of us. I think obviously there's a lot of excitement. We believe we're a playoff team,' Bregman said per Ian Browne. 'I think this group of guys has done a good job this year whether it's going bad, going good, just really putting our focus on the task at hand, the next pitch and I feel like that's kind of the mentality you have to take if you want to be a successful team,' he added. Alex Bregman has become a leader in the Red Sox clubhouse The Red Sox signed Bregman to a three-year, $120 million contract over the offseason. However, the team looks far different than Boston anticipated when the move was made. The Gold Glover replaced Rafael Devers at third base. And, after friction developed, the Red Sox shipped Devers to San Francisco. Despite missing 43 games with a right quad injury, Bregman has become a clubhouse leader in his first season with Boston. And he's contributed on the field as well, with a .896 OPS, 12 home runs, 39 RBI and 2.8 bWAR in just 60 games. Bregman is no longer a trade candidate after the Red Sox turned their season around with a mid-summer surge. While Boston is 7.5 games back in the division, the team is currently in the third Wild Card spot. And Bregman believes the Red Sox are a dangerous team. The makeup of the team, however, is still up in the air. Rumors continue to surround Jarren Duran with the trade deadline looming. However, that move would likely make more sense in the offseason. Whatever happens in the next week, Bregman wants the Red Sox to avoid distractions and stay focused on the game. Boston will attempt to bounce back from its series opening loss to the Dodgers with Garrett Crochet on the mound Saturday. Los Angeles will counter with veteran Clayton Kershaw. Why Red Sox' chances at ‘absolutely perfect fit' may be increasing ahead of trade deadline
BOSTON — As of the All-Star break, it seemed unlikely the Red Sox would be able to pry slugger Yandy Díaz from the division rival Rays. Things have changed, increasing the possibility that Boston will look to turn to Tampa Bay for offensive help. Tampa Bay's stance on not trading key players 'may be softening' because of how poorly the club has played in recent weeks, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, meaning Díaz could be moved before Thursday's trade deadline. ESPN's Buster Olney reported that the Rays 'could shift to become sellers' and painted Díaz as an 'absolutely perfect fit' for Boston. Earlier this month, as MassLive first reported, Red Sox decision-makers were privately wondering if the Rays could make Díaz available if they continued to struggle and identified him as someone at the top of the wish list should he be on the trading block. The Rays entered Sunday with a 6-14 July record (in part because the Red Sox swept them in a four-game set before the break) and at 53-52, are 2 ½ games out of the third and final American League wild card spot. Díaz intrigues the Red Sox for a few reasons. The 33-year-old is a right-handed hitter with pop, as evidenced by his 18 homers and 19 doubles so far this season. After Boston's need on the right side of the infield increased earlier this week when Marcelo Mayer sprained his wrist, Díaz fits the roster perfectly as a clear upgrade over the Abraham Toro/Romy Gonzalez platoon at first base. Especially intriguing to the Red Sox, according to a baseball source, is that Díaz is under control beyond 2025. Privately, the club is not guaranteeing that Triston Casas, who is rehabbing from a season-ending knee injury, will be the starter in 2026. Díaz is making $10 million this year (about $3.33 million in the final two months), then has a $12 million club option for 2026 and a vesting option for 2027 (based on plate appearances) that becomes a cheaper deal if he plays less. With Alex Bregman not under control past this year, the Red Sox would like some right-handed certainty in a 2026 lineup that's projected to include (barring trades) Roman Anthony, Wilyer Abreu, Jarren Duran, Masataka Yoshida, Mayer (and potentially Casas). With four days to go before the deadline, the Red Sox continue to focus on pitching upgrades. They'll continue to look at controllable (but potentially unattainable) arms like Minnesota's Joe Ryan, Pittsburgh's Mitch Keller and Miami's Sandy Alcantara while also playing in the pool of rentals that includes Arizona's Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, Kansas City's Seth Lugo and San Diego's Dylan Cease. Baltimore first baseman Ryan O'Hearn, a rental, is another clear fit. Bullpen arms are readily available this time of year and the Sox are looking into that market as well. Alex Bregman scratched after being in original Red Sox lineup for Wednesday matinee
MINNEAPOLIS — Alex Bregman was originally in the Red Sox' batting order for Wednesday's rubber match against the Twins. But a corrected lineup, sent out 27 minutes after the original, has the slugging third baseman sitting after all. Early Wednesday, Bregman texted Cora to let him know he could use a day. 'He was in there last night. I told him, 'Let me know in the morning how you feel,'' Cora said. 'He feels good with the quad, but a little bit tired. We told Toro there's a chance he'd play third and he'll play third. On Tuesday, Cora said Bregman — who is 13 games into his return from a quad strain that sidelined him for seven weeks — might not play Wednesday because of the early start (12:10 p.m. local) at Target Field. That will be the case as the club looks to get him two days of rest in a row (the team is off Thursday). 'That was the thought process but we gave him the chance to be honest with me in the morning,' Cora said. 'He texted me in the morning like, 'I can go, but I'm a little bit tired.'' Bregman, who played two of three games in his first three series back, has played five in a row, hitting .381 (8-for-21) with two doubles, two homers and six RBIs since Friday. In his place Wednesday is Abraham Toro, who is playing third base and hitting second against Twins righty Zebby Matthews. Elsewhere, Romy Gonzalez is at first base and Connor Wong is catching. It's Wong's first start since Friday and Gonzalez's first since Saturday. Carlos Narváez is out of the lineup; Ceddanne Rafaela is back at second base after playing center Tuesday night. Alex Cora also dropped the scuffling Masataka Yoshida in the order, from fifth to seventh. Wilyer Abreu is hitting fifth behind Trevor Story. The Red Sox will try to capture the series against the Twins with an early start before Thursday's off day, which is the MLB trade deadline. The club might look much different when play resumes Friday and the Sox open up a six-game homestand against the Astros. For now, though, Craig Breslow has yet to make a move on a slow-moving market. On Wednesday, it's Brayan Bello on the hill for Boston. The righty has changed the narrative about his struggles in day games so far this year, posting a 3.19 ERA in nine games (eight starts) so far. Bello is 4-4 with a 3.00 ERA in his last 10 games since June 3. Boston is 5-6 since the All-Star break and will get its second half record back to .500 with a win Wednesday. Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman sits against Twins to rest previously injured quad
MINNEAPOLIS — Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman sat out Boston's game Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins to rest the right quadriceps he strained earlier this season. Red Sox manager Alex Cora characterized the move as a precaution, with the third baseman expected back in the lineup Friday against Houston. 'I told him, in the morning, let me know how you feel,' Cora said. 'He feels good with the quad, but a bit tired.' Abraham Toro started in Bregman's place Wednesday at Minnesota. With Boston off on Thursday, the move gives Bregman two days of rest. Bregman strained the quad and missed seven weeks earlier in the season. The three-time All-Star is batting a career-best .298 with a .551 slugging percentage, .922 OPS, 44 RBI and 14 home runs in 64 games.
