Newport Big Splash Festival 2025 to take place next weekend

The two-day event will transform Newport city centre with live music, street theatre, dance, and family-friendly activities. The festival will be held on Saturday, July 19, and Sunday, July 20. Since its launch in 2010, Big Splash has become a major free outdoor arts event in South Wales. This year, attendees can look forward to a variety of performances, including acrobatics, circus workshops, traditional Welsh folk, and more. There will also be writing workshops with Children's Poet Laureate for Wales Alex Wharton, and a closing DJ set from Benji Webbe on the Celebrate Stage at 4.20pm on Sunday. The festival will take place across four zones: Splastonbury at The Riverfront, Usk Plaza, Celebrate Stage, and the Newport Now Creative Quarter. The Riverfront has collaborated with four creative professionals to produce new works with local community groups and schools, which will be showcased throughout the weekend. All events and activities are free, with the festival also providing accessible performances with British Sign Language (BSL), audio descriptions, and Welsh language shows. The Riverfront is hosting a free arts and crafts workshop on Saturday, from 11am to 4pm, in preparation for their Mini Makers Parade on Sunday.

The festival will run from Monday, July 28, to Saturday, August 2. The town will transform into a vibrant playground for young people, offering a variety of activities. The week-long event includes music, science and technology workshops, and printmaking sessions. The event is designed to spark every child's imagination with activities ranging from song-writing workshops to hands-on marine biology sessions. Young engineers can also build a clock and explore the wonders of the ocean in hands-on marine biology sessions at Pembrokeshire College. The Torch Theatre team will run a workshop imagining the myths and legends of the future. Children's Laureate Wales, Alex Wharton, will headline the festival finale at Haverhub on Saturday, August 2. He will perform a combination of poetry, rap, and songs. The festival, now in its third year, was founded by local parents and educators. Its aim is to nurture children's imagination, confidence, and curiosity during the school summer break. The event provides opportunities for children to discover new interests, learn skills, and enjoy creative experiences in Pembrokeshire. The festival has received support from the Arts Council of Wales. This support has helped to expand the programme and offer subsidised low-price tickets, ensuring accessibility for all. Tickets can be booked online at the Haverfordwest Children's Festival website.

Berkeley County School District announces 2025 District Teacher of the Year

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – The Berkeley County School District announced Friday morning that the district's 2025 Teacher of the Year comes from Berkeley High School. Alex Wharton is a special services educator who has more than 33 years of experience. She was honored at the annual Teacher of the Year Breakfast for her work as a champion for her students and for incorporating district skills into her teaching. After the announcement, Wharton took the stage to discuss educators' impact on their students and the importance of building relationships with them. 'By continuing to build meaningful relationships, we give our students more than grades or guidance; we give them a foundation for healing and a launchpad for thriving,' she said. 'Sometimes, what a student needs most isn't a better test score or a new strategy. What they need is someone who becomes, even for a season, an umbilical cord – a life-giving connection that supplies them with what they may not yet produce on their own: motivation, encouragement, confidence, and hope.' Wharton's son, Berkeley High senior John Wharton, was in attendance to cheer on his mom. Berkeley High Principal Heather Ducker also stepped up to say a few words about how lucky the school is to have Wharton. 'Mrs. Wharton loves all kids,' she said. 'She leads through God and her heart. She teaches some of our most vulnerable students, and they just cling to her. I learn from her daily, our faculty learns from her daily, and we're just really blessed to have her.' The educators who won teacher of the year at their individual schools were also honored at breakfast. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
