Real Madrid already having transfer REGRET over Trent Alexander-Arnold
Why didn't Alexander-Arnold play against PSG? But this isn't a situation Madrid wanted to find themselves in. Valverde is a midfielder - one of the best in the world. The club do NOT want to use him as a right-back. Advertisement Last season they had to manage as best they could with Dani Carvajal injured and a dearth of other options. Trent was supposed to sort this out. Signed to a massive contract and a sizeable signing-on fee, Madrid should be able to rely on him to fill the position long term. So where was he? Well, according to reports in Spain, he was injured. He didn't finish training well, it was claimed on Cadena Ser, and so starting duties had to be doled out elsewhere. And they are not happy about it. Carvajal tipped to take over 'Fede Valverde has to assume a position that is not his natural demarcation to keep the team competing, a circumstance to which he is more than accustomed,' reads a report in Defensa Central. Advertisement 'However, from the new Real Madrid coaching staff they know that this is not the solution to a problem that seemed extinct with the arrival of Trent Alexander-Arnold himself. 'If the physical problems of the Real Madrid '12' continue towards the league start, Dani Carvajal may be the one finally chosen to assume the starting position on the right lane.' © IMAGO - Trent Alexander-Arnold Liverpool 2024-25 Madrid not getting value from TAA deal For Madrid at least, the signs are worrying. Right-back is not a glamour position. You expect those guys to play the vast majority of the games. Spending a reported €15m per annum in salary costs should get you consistency and robustness. Not to mention the €2m per game they lavished on Trent to play in the CWC. Advertisement But those fitness problems are stacking up. Last season for the Reds, Trent had at least THREE separate injuries - causing him to miss around 10 matches in total. The season before, knee ligament trouble saw him miss even more matches. © Anfield Watch Liverpool have moved on from Trent Alexander-Arnold He may only be 26, but there is a lot of football in the legs of a player who's played senior football for close to a decade. Trent played close to 400 times for Liverpool - and has 34 England caps. Liverpool fans were dismayed by his decision to leave the club at the end of his contract - taking it to be a betrayal. Advertisement They would have preferred the vice-captain and homegrown hero to grow old at Anfield and enjoy the adulation coming his way for the rest of his career. But there is a chance that Liverpool have already got the best of Trent Alexander-Arnold - and are now ready to move on with Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley. And for Real Madrid his signing could be one which only adds to their problems at right-back rather than solving them. Madrid's players are already reported to be disgruntled at the level of so-called privilege Trent has been afforded. It's not been a great start to life for the Englishman in Madrid. Who knows, it may be a move he comes to regret as time passes.

‘He was there with me today' – Trent Alexander-Arnold speaks out after first game since Diogo Jota's tragic death
TRENT Alexander-Arnold dedicated his performance in Real Madrid's Club World Cup win to former Liverpool team-mate Diogo Jota. Alexander-Arnold took to the field for the first time since Jota and his brother were killed in a car accident on Thursday. 5 5 And the ex-Reds star created the second goal for fellow wing back Fran Garcia as Real raced into a 2-0 lead before surviving a Borussia Dortmund fightback in stoppage-time to win 3-2. Alexander-Arnold said: 'No matter how difficult it was and how difficult it is, I still have a job to do do. 'As hard as it was, I had to try to push it to the back of my mind. 'It was difficult, I'm not going to lie about that. 'I've done it in honour of my close friend. 'That's what I'm sure he would have wanted me to do and we would have had a laugh and a joke about the assist. 'That was in some way in memory of him. He was there with me today I'm sure.' Alexander-Arnold bravely decided to speak in public about Jota after previously paying tribute via social media. 5 Visibly emotional, the England star who joined Real in order to play in the Club World Cup told DAZN: 'First and foremost I want to send my condolences, my love, my thoughts and prayers to the family of a close friend of mine. 'It's been very very difficult for me and all the ones that knew him - not just team-mates, friends and family, but the footballing world. 'It's been very emotional and heartwarming to see the football world unite and come together to show their love and support to him and his family and his brother as well. 'Although it's been difficult, it's been a nice showing out from everyone, all clubs and all people uniting to show love and support in what must be a mind-blowingly hard time for the family. 'I've been in and around him and his brother, his family, his amazing wife, his parents, his amazing three children, so it's truly truly heartbreaking to wake up to news like that. 'It's something you would never ever expect. 'He was a very close friend, someone who lit up a room when he was in it. I shared a dressing room with him for five years, amazing memories on and off the pitch with him. 'He will never be forgotten by anyone. He will live long in our memories for the man and player he was.' 5

Alexander-Arnold settling in as Real Madrid target Club World Cup glory
The England international created the only goal of the game for Gonzalo Garcia as Xabi Alonso's side beat Italian giants Juventus 1-0 in the last 16. With Alonso moving to a back three as soon as he had the personnel available, Alexander-Arnold has benefitted from playing as a right wing-back in their last two matches. That is where he is set to continue against German outfit Dortmund in New Jersey on Saturday at the MetLife Stadium. Alexander-Arnold's floated cross for Gonzalo against Juventus was the precise kind of attacking output that led Madrid to bring him in. "He could have had many more assists already," said Los Blancos goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. "In training, he is horrible to play against. His corner kicks are another level. "I don't think I have seen a guy like this with such quality. As a goalkeeper it is a nightmare, but it will help make me better." Madrid skipper Dani Carvajal is back from a long-term injury but may end up being used more as a centre-back than in the wing-back position now that Alexander-Arnold has arrived. Los Blancos paid as much as 10 million euros ($11.75 million) according to reports to sign the 26-year-old a month before his Liverpool deal expired, but have already made approximately 54 million euros for reaching the Club World Cup quarter-finals. After struggling a little at right-back against Al Hilal in Madrid's opening 1-1 draw, Alexander-Arnold has steadily improved. Manchester City's 4-3 defeat by the Saudi Arabian club showed in hindsight the defender's problems were not entirely of his own making. Repeat with a twist As well as beating Dortmund in the 2024 Champions League final, Madrid came from two goals behind to thrash them 5-2 this season in the group phase of the same competition. However both teams have changed significantly since then. They have new coaches, in the newly-appointed Alonso and Dortmund's Niko Kovac, who has done a fine job since arriving in January, helping them secure qualification for next season's Champions League. Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen's arrivals have shaken up Madrid's defence, while Borussia Dortmund brought in Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland. However the midfielder's yellow card against Monterrey in the 2-1 last 16 win means he is suspended for the clash against Madrid and will therefore not face his older brother Jude Bellingham. Madrid's French striker Kylian Mbappe did not score in the rout of Dortmund in October amid a crisis of confidence, but since then has found top form. After returning from a stomach bug as a substitute against Juventus, Mbappe will be keen to start against the Bundesliga side and add to his tally of 43 goals. The former Paris Saint-Germain star, who is on a collision course with his former club in the semi-finals should they both progress, could come in for Gonzalo, despite the 21-year-old scoring three goals at the tournament. "It's inexplicable," said the forward, whom Alonso compared to former Madrid great Raul, saying Gonzalo had some of the same qualities. "I saw a great ball coming in from Trent, I saw Rudiger didn't get to it and I said to myself, 'this is mine!'" added Gonzalo of his goal against Juventus. Alonso, who arrived at Madrid from Bayer Leverkusen, will take on his former Bundesliga rivals Dortmund. "We know (him) very well, he worked two and a half years in Germany, and he did a fantastic job," said Kovac. "Now he's implementing everything he had in Leverkusen at Real Madrid. So we're expecting the same what we had in Leverkusen, only with different players. "We're looking forward to it but you have to play football for 90 minutes, and if we put everything onto the pitch, the same performance as we saw (against Monterrey), I think that we will have a good chance." © 2025 AFP

Frimpong ready to fill Alexander-Arnold's 'big shoes' at Liverpool
Trent Alexander-Arnold left "big shoes" to fill after leaving Liverpool for Real Madrid last month but new signing Jeremie Frimpong has no doubt he has the ability to replace the England international in the Premier League champions' defence. Frimpong's arrival from Bayer Leverkusen was announced hours after Alexander-Arnold joined Real Madrid, with the Dutch international becoming Arne Slot's first signing since winning the English top flight. "Liverpool. It's a big club, so it's big shoes regardless," Frimpong told Sky Sports in an interview published on Sunday, when asked if he would compete with Conor Bradley to succeed Alexander-Arnold as Liverpool's first choice for right back. "It's a winning team ... they win trophies for a reason. If you play for a team like Liverpool you have to fill in the shoes and perform. "I've always believed in myself. I'm a winner. That's what I'm going to bring to the team." Amsterdam-born Frimpong, who can also play as a winger, spent nine years at Manchester City as a youth player before making his senior debut in 2019 at Celtic, who won the Scottish Premiership in his first season. The 24-year-old joined Leverkusen in 2021 and made 34 appearances as they won the Bundesliga in 2023-24. "The Premier League is the best league in the world. I grew up in Manchester so I always wanted to come back. It was always the plan," Frimpong said. "I know what being a champion is like at Bayer Leverkusen, so joining a champion team is a privilege ... to go from watching (Liverpool) to playing for them is crazy. "The manager has told me how I can help the team and he really likes me as a player. It's given me extra motivation and belief."
