Ukraine drone attack on central Russia kills three, wounds 35

agencies kiev A Ukrainian drone attack at an industrial plant in central Russia has killed three people and injured 35 others, a Russian regional governor has said. Alexander Brechalov, head of the Udmurt Republic, said in a post on Telegram on Tuesday that the attack took place at a factory in Izhevsk city. Ten of the wounded were in a serious condition, he noted. There was no immediate official comment from Kiev. But a Ukrainian security official confirmed the attack, telling the news agency Reuters that the Kupol plant had been hit, with a fire breaking out as a result. The facility, which produces air defence systems and drones for the Russian army, is located roughly 1,300km (800 miles) from the Ukrainian border. If confirmed, the Ukrainian mission would be one of the deepest attacks of its kind inside Russia since the start of Russian President Vladimir Putin's full-scale invasion. However, it is not as far as one Kiev claimed last May, which reportedly hit an early-warning radar in the Russian city of Orsk, some 1,800km (1,120 miles) from Ukraine. Speaking to the AFP news agency on Tuesday, an unnamed Ukrainian security service (SBU) official hailed the most recent drone mission. 'Each such special operation reduces the enemy's offensive potential, disrupts military production chains and demonstrates that even deep in Russia's rear, there are no safe zones for its military infrastructure,' they said in written comments. The attack came a day after President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine would increase its drone production, following a surge in Russian drone attacks. Moscow fired some 5,438 long-range drones at Ukraine in June, its highest monthly total yet, according to an analysis by AFP. 'The priority is drones, interceptor drones and long-range strike drones,' Zelensky said on Telegram late on Monday about Ukraine's manufacturing drive.

Ukrainian drone strikes Russian plant 1,200km from border after record attacks from Russia

A UKRAINIAN DRONE has struck a Russian industrial plant 1,200km from Ukraine, a local official said, after Kyiv prioritised the weapon's development and Russia pounded Ukraine with a record number of drones last month. Russia launched 5,438 drones at Ukraine in June, a monthly record, according to official data collated by the Associated Press. Both sides have raced to improve drone technology and enhance their use on the battlefield, deploying increasingly sophisticated and deadlier drones, turning the war into a testing ground for the new weaponry. Ukraine is under severe strain from a Russian push in areas of the front line but analysts say its defences are largely holding firm. With recent direct talks delivering no progress on US-led international efforts to halt the fighting, Moscow and Kyiv are bulking up their arsenals. Meanwhile, a Ukrainian drone hit an industrial plant in Izhevsk, about 620 miles east of Moscow, killing three people and injuring 35, according to Alexander Brechalov, head of the Udmurtia region. The plant's workers were evacuated, he added. Advertisement The drone struck the Kupol Electromechanical Plant, which produces air defence systems and drones for the Russian military, according to an official with Ukraine's Security Service the SBU. At least two direct hits were recorded on the plant's buildings, the official said. Ukraine has for months been using domestically produced long-range drones to strike plants, storage sites and logistical hubs deep inside Russian territory. In May last year, a Ukrainian drone hit an early-warning radar in the Russian city of Orsk, 1,120 miles from the Ukrainian border, Kyiv officials claimed. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine's domestic production of drones is about to increase in response to Russia's expanded barrages. 'The priority is drones, interceptor drones and long-range strike drones,' he said late on Monday. 'This is extremely important,' he added. 'Russia is investing in its unmanned capabilities, Russia is planning to increase the number of drones used in strikes against our state. We are preparing our countermeasures.'

Three dead as Ukrainian drones strike defence industry plant in Russian city of Izhevsk

Ukrainian drones have struck an industrial facility in the city of Izhevsk in Udmurtia in the Volga region, the head of the Russian republic Alexander Brechalov wrote on Telegram on Tuesday. Brechalov said the drone strike had left three people dead and 35 injured. While Brechalov did not name the company affected, Telegram channel Astra cited eyewitnesses who said that the drones had targeted the Kupol electromechanical plant. The Kupol plant is part of the larger Almaz-Antey conglomerate, which produces air defence systems and attack drones using Chinese engines and components. The company is under EU and US sanctions. Andriy Kovalenko, the head of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council, also mentioned the drone strike on the Kupol plant, noting that Russia produced the Tor missile systems and the Garpiya attack drones for the Russian army there. However, Kovalenko did not immediately claim that Ukraine was responsible. Izhevsk, which is 1,300km from the Ukrainian border, was last targeted in November when a drone strike damaged another factory known to produce air defence systems and radar components, the Kyiv Independent reported, the first such Ukrainian drone attack on the region since the war began.

Ukraine hits Russian city deep behind front line

MOSCOW - Ukrainian drones attacked the Russian city of Izhevsk on Tuesday, killing three people and wounding dozens in one of the deepest strikes inside Russia of the three-year conflict, authorities said. Izhevsk, more than 1,000 kilometres from the front line, has arms production facilities including factories that make attack drones and the world-famous Kalashnikov rifle. A Ukraine security services source said Kyiv had targeted an Izhevsk-based drone manufacturer and that the attack had disrupted Moscow's 'offensive potential'. Unverified videos posted on social media showed at least one drone buzzing over the city, while another showed a ball of flames erupt from the roof of a building. The region's head said the drones hit an industrial 'enterprise', without giving detail. 'Unfortunately, we have three fatalities. We extend our deepest condolences to their families,' Alexander Brechalov, head of the Udmurt Republic, where Izhevsk is located, wrote on Telegram. 'I visited the victims in the hospital. At the moment, 35 people have been hospitalized, 10 of whom are in serious condition.' Russian forces in turn struck the town of Guliaipole in Ukraine's central Dnipropetrovsk region, causing 'casualties and fatalities', Ukraine's southern defence forces said, without specifying numbers. Diplomatic efforts to end the conflict have stalled in recent weeks. The two sides held direct talks almost a month ago but Moscow has since stepped up deadly strikes on Ukraine. Moscow ramps up advance Kyiv's military chief vowed in June to increase the 'scale and depth' of strikes on Russia, warning Ukraine would not sit back while Moscow prolonged its offensive. Moscow's army has ravaged parts of east and south Ukraine while seizing large swathes of territory. An AFP analysis published Tuesday found that Russia dramatically ramped up aerial attacks in June, firing thousands of drones to pressure the war-torn country's stretched air defence systems and exhausted civilian population. Moreover, in June, Moscow made its biggest territorial gain since November while accelerating advances for a third consecutive month, according to another AFP analysis based on data from US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW). In another sign of an intensifying offensive, a top Kremlin-installed official claimed on Monday that Russia was now in full control of Ukraine's eastern Lugansk region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly accused Russia of dragging out the peace process — something that Moscow denies. 'We are certainly grateful for the efforts being made by Washington and members of Trump's administration to facilitate negotiations on the Ukrainian settlement,' Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters including AFP on Tuesday.
