NSAM sets modest target for Munich World Cup squad
KUALA LUMPUR: National shooters have been given a target of finishing in at least the top-15 at the ISSF World Cup Rifle-Pistol Championships in Munich, Germany on June 8 to 15.
The squad travelling to Munich features a blend of youth and experience which includes two-time Olympian Johnathan Wong, Asia Cup champion Alia Sazana Azahari, Gan Chen Jie - who was named Sarawak Malaysian Games Sportswoman last year, as well as Hasli Izwan Amir Hasan.
National Shooting Association of Malaysia (NSAM) executive secretary Hayati Shamsuri said the competition is expected to be stiff in Munich.
"This World Cup in Munich is about giving our shooters exposure and an opportunity to improve their world rankings," said Hayati when contacted today (June 2).
"Their performances in Munich will not be taken into consideration when selecting the squad for the SEA Games in Thailand this December.
"This is a world-class event and the competition will be extremely tough. We have set a target for our shooters to reach the finals of their respective events.
"However, given the calibre of the field, we would be satisfied with a top-15 finish."
Hayati added that selection for the SEA Games will be based on performances on the national circuit.
"We will use results from the national circuit to assess who has achieved the qualifying marks for the SEA Games," she said.
"There is a broader pool of talent competing domestically. One leg of the circuit was held in April and the next is scheduled for June."
