Sarawak records over 70 pct drop in dengue cases, no deaths reported in 2025 so far

SIBU (July 12): Sarawak has recorded a significant 70.44 per cent drop in dengue cases from January to July 5 this year compared to the same period in 2024, according to Deputy Speaker II of the Dewan Rakyat, Alice Lau Kiong Yieng. Delivering her speech at the State-Level Gotong-Royong Mega Perangi Aedes 1.0 2025 at Sibu Jaya Community Clinic this morning, Lau said that only 365 dengue cases were reported statewide so far this year, compared to 1,235 cases during the same period last year, a reduction of 870 cases. 'More importantly, no dengue-related deaths have been reported this year, compared to six fatalities in 2024,' she said. In Sibu Division alone, 37 cases were recorded from January to July 5, compared to 71 cases during the same period last year, a decrease of 47.88 per cent, with zero deaths reported. Despite the encouraging statistics, Lau cautioned that dengue outbreaks could still pose a threat to Sarawak's economic growth, as many of those affected are from the productive, working-age population. 'The economic impact is not just in terms of treatment costs borne by the government and individuals, but also in the form of productivity loss due to illness,' she said. Lau, who is also Member of Parliament for P.211 Lanang, acknowledged the efforts of various agencies and community volunteers such as COMBI (Communication for Behavioural Impact) for their role in dengue prevention activities. However, she stressed the need for continued and coordinated efforts. 'Community clean-up campaigns like this must continue to be a proactive platform to strengthen cooperation between state and local governments, NGOs, and local communities in fighting the spread of dengue,' she said. Also present at the event were State Deputy Director of Health (Public Health) Dr Mohammad Nazarudin Bahari, Sibu Divisional Health Officer Dr Teh Jo Hun, Councillor Teo Ming Pao, Sibu District Office Administrative Officer Sylvia Lau Gin Si, Sibu Division Health Office Epidemiologist Dr Pauline Robert Ero, and State Health Department Vector Unit Head Dr Diana Jawa. B40 folk in Sibu get help in obtaining motorcycle licence
Lau says a motorcycle licence is a ticket to economic survival. The Class B2 Motorcycle Licence Assistance (BLM) programme received an overwhelming response in the Lanang constituency in Sibu, Sarawak. The 1,650 participants from the B40 group obtained their licences to enable mobility and promote socio-economic improvement of low-income communities. Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Alice Lau Kiong Yieng described the programme as a catalyst for change at the grassroots level, enabling participants to access job opportunities in the rapidly growing transport and delivery sector. The programme not only removes the cost to obtaining a licence, but also has a direct impact on the ability of the B40 group to participate in the gig economy and delivery-based jobs. 'This is the inclusive approach we want – not only meeting daily needs but also providing space for the people to build a better life. 'A motorcycle licence is not just a piece of paper, it is a ticket to economic survival,' said Lau at the closing of the programme. The BLM programme, which is run by the Road Transport Department (JPJ), was implemented last year in Sarawak. The oldest participant was 72 while the youngest was 16. Lau also expressed her appreciation of the roles of enforcement agencies such as JPJ, police and Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP), which educate and ensure compliance with road laws. 'We want everyone to return home safely. 'That is why the government's target to reduce road deaths by 50% by 2030 is a humanitarian responsibility,' said the Lanang MP. JPJ Sarawak director Norizan Jili and JPJ Sibu branch head Nurul Fairezzah Safri were among those present.

S'wak: Over 3k secure class B2 motorcycle licences via MyLesen
SIBU: More than 3,000 people from Sarawak's B40 low-income group have obtained probationary motorcycle licences this year under a government assistance programme to improve mobility and safety. State Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Norizan Jili said the MyLesen initiative has helped 3,708 individuals secure Class B2 Probationary Driving Licences (PDL). Of these, 1,650 participants came from the Lanang parliamentary constituency alone. At the programme's closing ceremony at SMK Sacred Heart Hall today, he said the department planned to expand the initiative further, noting that 13,370 people benefited from it last year. Lanang Member of Parliament and Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Alice Lau Kiong Yieng officiated the event. Norizan noted that MyLesen is part of the Transport Ministry's corporate social responsibility (CSR) drive, designed to help low-income individuals access affordable licensing while promoting road safety and legal awareness. He added that the programme also supports the national goal of halving road accident fatalities by equipping participants with basic traffic discipline and compliance skills to improve their day-to-day lives. He also urged participants to drive responsibly, follow traffic laws and assist JPJ by reporting vehicles with non-compliant number plates through the MyJPJ app.
