Does your greenhouse need a glow-up?
There's definitely a 'pimped-up' greenhouse moment happening,' says Nelly Hall, creative director of premium greenhouse company Alitex, whose clients include the Beckhams and Mary Berry. 'For some, the greenhouse never even sees a plant. It's an entertaining space. Think long tables for dinner parties, chandeliers and wood-burning stoves with flues cleverly integrated into the glass structure.' Hall's own greenhouse – a bronze, Victorian-style structure in Hampshire – sits somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. 'A greenhouse is a big investment [Alitex's start at £18,750], so I use mine all year round to sow seeds and pot plants,' she says, 'and also as a personal space.' In summer, Hall's metal occasional table is used both for gardening and to have cocktails with friends. In winter, she brings in branches, bracken and fairy lights for hosting cosy dinners. 'I also use the greenhouse to read and meditate,' she says. In his house in Wales, the film director, actor and writer Sean Mathias (A Bridge Too Far, Hamlet) has a greenhouse containing a bronze roll-top bath that allows him to get 'off-grid' among the foliage. The space, designed by Victorian-style greenhouse specialist White Cottage Greenhouses, is a romantic retreat, with smoke-green herringbone tiles ( sells similar) and vintage chandeliers. 'The sage green of the framework complements the garden, and the glass allows for views of the sea and beyond,' says Mathias. The space also includes a vintage apothecary-style cabinet, sheepskin rugs and mid-century furniture. Prices for a similar-size structure (6.3m x 3.3m) start at £30,000, although smaller ones start from £7,250. If budgets don't stretch that far, opt for a high-street version and luxe it up with a lick of paint ( sells exterior masonry paint in a range of colours). Simple touches such as hessian blinds (try and floor tiles, which will make a big difference. We love the Arbe greenhouse at (6ft x 6ft, £349.99, pictured top) for its reeded polycarbonate panels, and the Nottingham wooden greenhouse at (6ft x 3ft, £528). Make the most of the internal footprint by adding shelves to display artwork an hang plants or pendant lights from the ceiling for a Good Life-meets-Sunday-brunch vibe. For the ultimate in indoor/outdoor inspiration, head to a fashionable, Instagram-friendly retreat such as The Pig in the New Forest, Soho Farmhouse in Oxfordshire or The Petersham Hotel in Richmond upon Thames. A touch of glass! Glam greenhouses create frenzy in US
In the gardens of wealthy Americans, there is a new status symbol. It is a $115,000 (£85,000) Victorian-style greenhouse, designed and made by Alitex, a family business based in Petersfield, Hampshire, run and owned by Tom and Hilly Hall. Such is the popularity of its bespoke glasshouses that Alitex is considering setting up a base in the US to expand sales despite uncertainty over tariffs. Its greenhouses are made of powder-coated aluminium with a painted wood effect. The UK-US trade deal reduced the aluminium tariff from 25 per cent to zero. British fans include garden guru Alan Titchmarsh who told celebrity chef Mary Berry: 'Mary, if you're going to buy a greenhouse it has to be an Alitex.' David Beckham has installed an Allitex greenhouse in the grounds of his family's Cotswold mansion and shows off his horticultural successes on Instagram. Now there is a growing US clientele, drawn by Alitex's elegant 19th-Century aesthetic. Tom Hall says hotspots are Connecticut and New Hampshire, where the Wall Street wealthy reside or have second homes, along with oil-rich Texas. Bespoke greenhouses in the UK are individually priced but the firm has come up with eight freestanding designs with the National Trust starting at £18,750. There is no greenhouse tradition in the US, Hall explains, adding: 'Here,if people don't have one themselves their parents or their grandparents did. But that's not the case in America, where they are seen as something novel.'

The famed couple were seen spending some time together in their garden as David rummaged through his plot. Playfully taking a clip of her husband, Victoria, 51, told him that she thought he looked good, and David cheekily protested. Victoria playfully dubbed him an 'ageing fashion icon', to which he replied that it was 'good for the mind'. For their one-to-one time in the garden, David was seen wearing a bright orange beany hat, a grey T-shirt, cream socks and white slip-on Vans shoes. As he shared the clip to his social media grid he explained that he thought his dashing wife was 'hilarious' after he made a confession about his vegetables. He penned: 'Radish Alert. My wife's hilarious, she just ate 5 of my radishes once washed of course.' David showcased his green thumb a more in depth look at his passion project last year. He flaunted his bountiful harvest, with baskets brimming with potatoes, kale, carrots and cauliflower. Meanwhile, son Brooklyn opted for a laid-back evening, going shirtless during a cozy game night with his wife, Nicola Peltz. David's latest garden pride came after he gave fans a rare glimpse of his huge kitchen garden. He upgraded his £12m Cotswold farmhouse with an expensive Alitex greenhouse. Taking to Instagram in June, David joked his wife Victoria, 50, would be eating spring onions for lunch and dinner after a successful harvest. He wrote: 'Looks like @victoriabeckham has a few spring onions for lunch and dinner for the next few weeks How am I doing @alatichmarshmbe.' David added he was suffering from hay fever, but it certainly didn't stop from continuing his outdoor occupations. 'Not bad for my first try,' he said. Taking to his Instagram stories, the former footballer ensured to document his gardening ventures and shared a selfie in front of his kitchen garden as he busied himself, despite the wet weather.

Garden show season is nearly upon us, when plant lovers flock to Chelsea, Malvern and Hampton Court to see the flowers, peer at the show gardens and find inspiration for their own outdoor spaces. I love these shows, but it is never just the plants that I'm seeking out; I make a beeline for the greenhouses — and not just because I plan to grow tomatoes or overwinter pelargoniums. In my fantasy greenhouse, I also sip my morning coffee, entertain friends with a candlelit dinner, birdwatch from a comfy chair and potter among the seedlings.
