Cork labelled the Mayo of hurling by fans after epic All-Ireland final collapse

Cork fans turned up to Croke Park on Sunday expecting to see their team win the All-Ireland Hurling Championship for the first time in 20 years. While it was never seen as a forgone conclusion, Cork were considered to be heavy favourites for the final against a Tipp team that had somewhat come from nowhere to reach the season finale. And the Rebels looked full value for their favourites tag when they raced into a six-point half-time lead thanks to Shane Barrett's goal just before the interval. But a paltry return of two points in the second-half put an end to Cork's hopes as Tipp put them to the sword and cruised to a first All-Ireland title in 2019. For Cork, this defeat is now their fifth defeat in finals since that win in 2005. And with that in mind, many fans on social media have been making unfavourable comparisons between Cork and the Mayo footballers, who have lost 11 finals since their last Sam Maguire triumph in 1951. Here's how fans on social media reacted to the game: "Cork the Mayo of hurling." "Cork is the Mayo of Hurling , Up the Premier County." "Two points in 30mins, madness. Are Cork hurlers the new Mayo footballers?" "A Mayo esque collapse from Cork in an All Ireland Final! Incredible." "Cork the Mayo of hurling." "Cork hurlers surely worse than Mayo footballers ever were." "This is prime Mayo football from Cork hurling here." "It's official, Cork are the Mayo of hurling." "Cork are the mayo of hurling can't win the big on." "Cork are the new mayo 2 points in second half of an all Ireland tipp tipp from a Limerick man hoggie will never win now." While it was heartbreak for Cork, it was sheer jubilation for Tipp and for one man in particular. Darragh McCarthy was crowned man of the match at just 19 years of age and struggled to put into words his emotion in an interview with BBC after the game. "I have no words, it's a pure privilege. We've been using the word privileged for the last 12 months, and that is what this is. I can't believe it, I can't believe it," he told the BBC. McCarthy has not always had it his own way, and was a substitute in one of the recent All-Ireland Minor finals and said it's always about the best for the team. "That is what you have to do when you are part of a panel you have to do what is best for the team. My best friend there was dropped to the reserves, but he's such a good lad and took it with such honour and pride and did what is best for the team, and that is what you have to do with minors as well and all the way up, do what's best for the team, and that's it really." "I have no words, really. It's just such an honour to be here representing. It all means so much to our families. The commitment the last 12 months, we've barely been at home. That's what it's all about. We're going to enjoy these next few weeks. "

Emotional scenes as Tipp captain pays tribute to late Dillon Quirke after win

Tipperary captain Ronan Maher paid an emotional tribute to the late Dillon Quirke in his winning speech after Tipp beat Cork to win the All-Ireland Hurling Championship. Trailing by six points at half-time, Tipperary produced one of the best second-halves in final history as they limited Cork to just two points and cruised to a 15-point win. There were scenes of immense joy at the end of the game as Tipp won their first title in six years, but as Ronan Maher collected the Liam MacCarthy Cup from GAA President Jarlath Burns, there was one person in his mind. After paying tribute to his teammates, Cork and the staff at Croke Park, Maher took a moment to remember former Tipp star Quirke, who passed away three years ago at the age of 24 during a club match due to Sudden Adult Death Syndrome. "To one player who is no longer with us but is so much a part of what we are, Dillon Quirke..." said Maher before a huge round of applause rang out around Croke Park. Dillon Quirke "We carried your spirit with us every step of the way" continued Maher as manager Liam Cahill wept. "You were in the dressing room, you were on the field of play, you were in our hearts, and we hope that we did you and your family proud today." Former Tipperary manager Liam Sheedy also remembered Dillon after the game, saying on RTE that he hoped Dillon was in 'a corporate box above' looking down on his teammates winning a 29th All-Ireland title. A foundation in Quirke's name was set up after the young man's death in 2022. By the end of 2024, the foundation had helped more than 10,000 people get heart scans.

When did Cork last win the All-Ireland Hurling Championship?

Cork take on Tipperary this afternoon in the final of the All-Ireland Hurling Championship. The Rebels have been a coming force in recent years and have now reached three All-Ireland finals since 2021. They were beaten in last year's final by Clare and in 2021 were hammered by Limerick, so, they will be hoping that the third time is the charm for this current crop of hurlers. Pat Ryan's side have been the team of the Summer to date. They edged past Limerick in a dramatic Munster final penalty shootout, and after Dublin shocked the world by taking Limerick out at the quarter-final stage, the men in red hammered the boys in blue to reach another final. Much has been made of the fact that Cork haven't won an All-Ireland in many years. However, how long exactly has this drought been going on for? The answer is 20 years, but for Cork fans, 20 years may as well be 200 years. Between 1890 and 2005, Cork took home the championship on a staggering 30 occasions, with the longest gap between wins standing at 16 years between 1903 and 1919. That figure has long been surpassed and backed by a ferocious support, they will be gunning to win the Liam MacCarthy Cup for the 31st time. Standing in their way is a Tipperary side that have defied the odds to reach the All-Ireland final. After a string of miserable seasons where they failed to get out of Munster, Tipp are back in the biggest match in hurling as they seek to win a first medal since 2019 in what is remarkably the first ever final clash between the two Munster giants. Throw-in today is set for 3.30pm and buckle up because this one should be a cracker.
