Amanda Anisimova reflects on 'surreal' Wimbledon finish, momentum headed into favorite major US Open

Amanda Anisimova had the best Grand Slam finish of her career at The Wimbledon Championships, and though she fell short to Iga Świątek in the final, the American tennis star is taking away some unmatched memories and lessons for her next major of the season. Amanda Anisimova opens up on Wimbledon finish, champagne interruptions "It was such a remarkable experience for me, and making it to the first Grand Slam final and it being at Wimbledon was a surreal feeling," the 23-year-old said in a new interview with "Good Morning America." "Even though it didn't go the way I would have wanted it to go, my opponent obviously was was playing some great tennis, and I've had to compete against so many incredible athletes throughout the entire fortnight," she continued. Despite her runner-up finish, Anisimova has since jumped up the WTA rankings, breaking into the top 10 for the first time at No. 7. "It feels so surreal to be ranked [No.] 7 right now -- it's my career high and what a quick turnaround for me," she told "GMA." Anisimova added that there were larger takeaways, like having her family present and "getting to experience that moment with me," which she called "incredibly special." "Getting to meet Kate Middleton after the final at the ceremony, there were so many special moments and so many other things that I can take away apart from the performance in itself," she added. The New Jersey native took a hiatus from the professional circuit in May 2023 until January 2024 to focus on her mental health and said that "it's been quite the journey coming back." "The most important thing for me since coming back has honestly been doing everything on my own terms and just enjoying the moment," she said. "And that's what I told myself coming out into Wimbledon. I was just incredibly excited to just be playing in the main draw, because I didn't make it last year." Anisimova made history as the youngest American woman singles player to advance to the Wimbledon finals -- after defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka -- since Serena Williams. "Getting to play on on Centre Court and winning against the most incredible athlete in tennis right now was super special to me and just an exhilarating feeling," she said. "It'll last me a lifetime of memories for sure." The iconic All England Lawn Tennis venue brought with it some very posh quirks, including champagne bottles popping mid-match that prompted officials to silence spectators. "That was like the 15th time, so I think that my reaction was valid -- it was just a reminder of where I was," Anisimova recalled. "It felt very English -- but it was a funny experience for sure. And then after the match, I was able to laugh about it afterwards, of course." Amanda Anisimova has high hopes to 'go far' at US Open With the final major of the season just over a month out, Anisimova said she's excited to return to Queens and get on the courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. "The U.S. Open is my favorite tournament by far. It's always super exciting to be playing there, and I'm sure I'll have the whole home crowd cheering for me over there," she said. "Again, all of my family is going to come and support me -- I am sure it's going to be a great tournament. And hopefully I can go far again." Sabalenka is the current defending women's singles U.S. Open champion.

Isla Fisher narrowly avoids ex Sacha Baron Cohen at Wimbledon as she arrives with her brother after finalising divorce

Isla Fisher narrowly avoided ex-husband Sacha Baron Cohen at Wimbledon on Sunday as she arrived alongside her older brother Daniel - after finalising her divorce. English actor Sacha, 53, was seen chatting to a guest in the stands during the Gentlemen's Single Final at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Isla, 49, and Sacha, who met in 2001 and wed in 2010, announced they had finalised their £120million (approximately $250million AUD) divorce on June 14. In a message posted simultaneously on both their Instagram sites to confirm their divorce, the pair said: 'Our divorce has now been finalised. 'We are proud of all we've achieved together and, continuing our great respect for each other, we remain friends and committed to co-parenting our wonderful children. 'We ask for the media to continue to respect our children's privacy.' They were believed to have one of the strongest marriages in showbusiness before quietly separating in 2023. They then publicly announced their break-up in April 2024, and it now appears they have amicably resolved any differences. A source said: 'It's all sorted. Now Sacha and Isla both just want to get on with the rest of their lives and focus on their family's well-being.' The pair announced their separation last year with a picture of themselves wearing tennis whites. They confirmed in an accompanying message: 'After a long tennis match lasting over 20 years, we are finally putting our racquets down.' In an enthralling four-set encounter, Italian player Jannik Sinner defeated defending champion Carlos Alcaraz to win the first Wimbledon title of his career. The Australian actress had her brother on her arm at the Champagne Lanson event at Agapanthus Suite. She also has another brother called Edward. Isla was glowing as she posed beside him, who warmly rested his arm around her waist as the pair beamed for photos against the media wall. The star added a pair of white leather high heels in a patent finish and sported a pair of designer sunglasses, while carrying a wicker purse Isla opted for a cream ensemble which included a blouse worn under a blazer and a matching pleated midi-skirt. Her handsome brother coordinated with Isla, wearing a white shirt with a cream suit and a pair of trainers. The duo stuck close together at the event, and were also seen arriving together with Isla walking a little in front of her pal. Isla was also the picture of happiness last week as she stepped out looking glamorous in a busty floral dress for day one of the Wimbledon Championships. Isla and Sacha - who have three children together - first met at a party in Sydney, Australia, in 2001. Speaking of their first encounter, Sacha recalled quickly noticing Isla was 'hilarious'. He remembered: 'We were at a very pretentious party, and me and her bonded over taking the mick out of the other people at the party. I knew instantly. I don't know if she did,' he added. Speaking earlier this year of their break-up, Isla said: 'It's the most difficult thing that I've been through and I've learnt so much about myself in the process. 'I never imagined my family being separated but we are committed and loving parents.'

Sinner rises above adversity to make Italian history

Jul 13, 2025; Wimbledon, United Kingdom; Jannik Sinner of Italy returns a shot during the menÕs singles final match against Carlos Alcaraz of Spain on day 14 at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Mandatory Credit: Susan Mullane-Imagn Images LONDON - Jannik Sinner spoke of his pride at overcoming months of adversity on and off the court after claiming his first Wimbledon title by dethroning rival Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday. The ice-cool 23-year-old beat the Spaniard 4-6 6-4 6-4 6-4 to become Italy's first Wimbledon singles champion and claim his fourth Grand Slam title. Sinner's third major came at this year's Australian Open where he retained the title despite the dark cloud of a possible ban for a doping violation hanging over his head. Tennis authorities found the world number one bore 'no fault or negligence' for a positive test for anabolic steroid clostebol -- Sinner saying it had inadvertently entered his system via a massage from a team member -- but he accepted a three-month ban from World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in February. His title on Sunday was his first since returning in May and came five weeks after losing an epic French Open final to Alcaraz in which he squandered three match points. "Very emotional, even if I don't cry," Sinner told reporters on Sunday. "It feels emotional because only me and the people who are close to me know exactly what we have been through on and off the court, and it has been everything except easy. "We've tried to push every practice session, even if I was struggling at times mentally. Maybe even more in practice sessions because I feel like when I play the match, I can switch off and just play. I believe that this helped me a lot." Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Cahill said it was down to Sinner's resilience. "I think you could see that from the first match that he played, that he wasn't carrying any baggage from Roland Garros," Cahill told reporters. "That's not easy to do. "It's easy for us to say that in words, to put it to one side, but for the player to wipe it away and be able to come here with the mentality that he had, is 100% credit to him." Sinner said the way he lost to Alcaraz in Paris had actually made it easier to move on. "I always tried to be honest with myself ... I always tried to accept it," he said. "I believe if you lose a Grand Slam final that way, it's much better like this than when someone kills you. "I did a lot of intensity in every practice because I felt like that I could play very good. That's why I also said after Roland Garros that it's not the time to be down, because another Grand Slam is coming up, and I did great here." REUTERS

'Motivation Going Forward': Amanda Anisimova Looks To Take Lessons From Iga Swiatek Rout

Last Updated: The 23-year-old American opined that her nerves got the better of her on her first Grand Slam final appearance as Pole Swiatek ran riot. Amanda Anisimova had to endure a chastening experience as she was blanked 0-6, 0-6 in the final of Wimbledon 2025 by Iga Swiatek on Saturday in a lopsided summit clash. The 23-year-old American opined that her nerves got the better of her on her first Grand Slam final appearance as Pole Swiatek ran riot. 'I was a bit frozen there with my nerves," Anisimova said, reflecting on her lacklustre showing in the championship battle. 'Maybe the last two weeks I got a bit tired or something," she added. Anisimova, who is set to climb to a career-high rank of No. 7 in the world on the back of her run to the final at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croque Club, added that she would look to consider the hefty defeat as motivation moving forward. 'It's not how I would have wanted my first Grand Slam final to go. I think I was a little bit in shock after, as well," she recollected. 'But I told myself, 'I'll definitely come out stronger after this'. That's not an easy thing to go through, losing 6-0, 6-0 in a Grand Slam final." 'If anything, I can look at it as a positive and something I can look at as motivation going forward. Obviously there's a lot of things I need to do to progress," the American added. Road To Final Anisimova opened her campaign at SW19 with a win over Yulia Putintseva, before sinking Renata Zarazu and Dalma Galfi in the scond and third rounds respectively. Linda Noskova fell victim to the American in the Ro16 clash before Anisimova upset the experienced Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarters. The American's most memorable moment in the run to the final has to be her shock win over World No.1 Aryna Sabaleka in the semifinal. However, Anisimova was no match for Swiatek, who did the double bagel over the American in stunning fashion to clinch the Venus Rosewater Dish. Anisimova explained that her run to the final had taken a toll on her body and sought to improve on her physicality. 'I didn't practice yesterday. I think that I was just really fatigued," she added. 'I could feel it also in my warm-up this morning. I mean, I had to take a break after every single rally out there in my warm-up," Anisimova continued. 'I think, if anything, it's my physicality that I need to work on," she revealed. 'I'm going to choose the path of working towards my goals and to try and keep improving, hopefully put myself in more positions and opportunities like today," she said. 'I think that's going to help me reach my goals," the American signed-off. First Published: July 13, 2025, 11:31 IST
