India arrests three after student gang-rape in Kolkata

NEW DELHI: Indian police have arrested three men accused of gang raping a law student in Kolkata, officials said Friday, a case that has reignited anger in a city still scarred by the rape and murder of a doctor last year. The survivor said she was assaulted on Wednesday evening inside a room on the college premises, Indian media reported, with the three accused including two current and one former student. The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), the ruling party in West Bengal state, said the 'full weight of the law will be brought to bear'. The case again highlights the chronic issue of sexual violence in the world's most populous country, where an average of nearly 90 rapes a day were reported in 2022. It has also sparked fresh political clashes between the AITC and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP accused the AITC-led state government of failing to protect women. West Bengal had become a 'breeding ground for crimes against women', the BJP said in a statement. 'State machinery continues to fail its daughters'. The AITC rejected the accusations. Indian police arrest four people for cricket fans stampede The assault comes after a Kolkata court in January sentenced the rapist and murderer of a 31-year-old doctor to life in prison. Her killing in August 2024 at a state-run hospital in Kolkata triggered protests, with candlelight marches and nationwide outrage over the continuing violence against women. The brutality of that attack drew comparisons to the 2012 gang rape and murder of a young woman on a bus in New Delhi, a crime that shocked the country and led to widespread demonstrations.

Kaliganj bypolls: TMC candidate Alifa Ahmed secures landslide victory against BJP's Ashish Ghosh; CM Mamata Banerjee expresses gratitude

NEW DELHI: All India Trinamool Congress candidate Alifa Ahmed secured a sweeping victory in the Kaliganj Assembly bypoll, defeating BJP's Ashish Ghosh by a margin of 50,049 votes—surpassing the 2021 win margin of her late father, Nasiruddin Ahmed, whose passing in February prompted the election in West Bengal's Nadia district. Congress candidate Kabil Uddin Shaikh, backed by the Left, finished third with 28,348 votes. The byelection, held on Thursday, saw a voter turnout of 69.85% by 5pm and was largely peaceful, aside from a few isolated incidents. Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee expressed gratitude saying, "People of all religions, castes, races and walks of life in the area have blessed us immensely by exercising their right to vote in the by-elections to the Kaliganj Assembly constituency. I humbly express my gratitude to them. The main architects of this victory are mother, soil, and people. My colleagues from Kaliganj have worked tirelessly for this. I also extend my heartfelt congratulations to them. " "My greetings and salutations to everyone. In memory of the late MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed, I dedicate this victory to the motherland and people of Bengal," she said. Alifa, a 38-year-old engineer, left her corporate role at a Kolkata-based IT company to enter politics, drawing inspiration from Mahua Moitra, the Trinamool MP from Krishnanagar—under which the Kaliganj Assembly segment falls. Like Moitra, who traded her career in investment banking for the political arena, Alifa chose grassroots engagement and legislative advocacy over her former profession. Meanwhile, a blast in Kaliganj in Naida district killed a 13-year-old girl prompting CM Mamata to take strict action against the culprits.

Bengal to borrow Rs 4K cr for 25% DA pay to staff

KOLKATA: The West Bengal government has started preparations to approach the market this week to borrow approximately Rs 4,300 crore to pay the 25% Dearness Allowance (DA) to state government employees and pensioners, following a Supreme Court order issued on May 16. The state requires around Rs 10,425 crore to comply with the apex court's order by June 27; or else it may face contempt of court proceedings. On the contrary, complying with the order will push the state into a larger debt trap with a total outstanding debt of Rs 7,06,531.61 crore, as per the revised budget estimate for 2024-25. When the Mamata Banerjee government came into power in May 2011, the state had a total debt of around Rs 1.89 lakh crore. Over the last 14 years, the debt has nearly quadrupled due to inadequate mobilisation of financial resources and a significant jump in expenditure related to various welfare schemes, including 'Kanyashri', and 'Lakshmir Bhandar'. According to political observers, these schemes paid a huge dividend to Mamata Banerjee's All India Trinamool Congress in the electoral politics both in Assembly and Lok Sabha polls by securing most of the women's vote. However, at the same time, these schemes, along with 'Swastha Sathi', somehow depleted the exchequer somehow.

Nilambur bypoll: P.V. Anvar kicks up fresh row by refusing to embrace UDF candidate Shoukath on poll day

P.V. Anvar, All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) Kerala State convener who is contesting the byelection in Nilambur as an Independent, kicked up a row by refusing to embrace United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate Aryadan Shoukath when they met at a polling station at Nilambur on Thursday (June 19, 2025) morning. Mr. Shoukath walked up to Mr. Anvar and shook hands with him when they met. However, Mr. Anvar warned Mr. Shoukath not to embrace him. 'Because I feared it will be a Dhritarashtra embrace,' Mr. Anvar told the media later referring to devastating hugging of Dhritarashtra in the Mahabharata. Mr. Anvar clarified why he refused to embrace and why he warned Mr. Shoukath not to embrace him. 'He (Mr. Shoukath) is someone who embraces everyone. I don't want that. I don't want that Dhritarashtra embrace.' Mr. Anvar also described Mr. Shoukath as 'an actor.' 'You see what happened when two actors met,' he said referring to Mr. Shoukath embracing Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate M. Swaraj when they met. Addressing the media earlier, Mr. Anvar said he would garner more than 75,000 votes. He said he would wrest 35% to 40% votes from the LDF and 25% from the UDF. He blamed both UDF and LDF candidates for ignoring the real issues of Nilambur and its people. He said Mr. Shoukath was still in his 'filmy world' and that he would have to 'continue storywriting' after the elections. 'You cannot hoodwink the people of Nilambur with your fashion parade,' he said referring to Mr. Shoukath. Mr. Anvar said he was preparing to walk up to Thiruvananthapuram along with his followers to take oath after victory in the byelection.

All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha member and former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan campaigned for TMC State convener and Independent candidate P.V. Large crowds had gathered along the road from Vadapuram to Nilambur town to greet Mr. Pathan. Before joining the roadshow, Mr. Pathan played cricket with a group of youngsters at Media Sports Turf. He batted while the local youth bowled to him. One of them bowled the former Indian player out, and said it was his dream wicket. Addressing the media later, Mr. Pathan said that Mr. Anvar would not only influence the election results in Nilambur, but also become the player of the match. 'Mr. Anvar is so dear to the people of Nilambur, and he works for them. He has been working for the people of Nilambur for nine years,' he said.
