Donovan Mitchell hints about his long-term plans with the Cavaliers after being judged for leaving Utah: "Just being able to call a place home and be there'
Donovan Mitchell hints about his long-term plans with the Cavaliers after being judged for leaving Utah: "Just being able to call a place home and be there' originally appeared on Basketball Network. While approaching his fourth year with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Donovan Mitchell appears to have finally found some stability. Mitchell had a stand-out 2024-25 season, individually and for the team, making the All-NBA First Team and registering 64 wins as the first seed in the East. Advertisement Unfortunately, the Cavaliers failed to translate their regular-season success into the playoffs. The health of the roster was a matter of concern, with things only getting worse once Mitchell sprained his left ankle. As a result, the Pacers managed to eliminate them in five games. Looking ahead at the 2025-26 season, Spida revealed that this was the first time there was no ambiguity surrounding his future. As part of several trade speculations over the years, he mentioned how the last season was the most secure he had felt in a while. "I tell people all the time that was the first year in about five years where there was not a question of where Donovan Mitchell is going next. I was in Utah, it was like Where's he going next," he started. When I was in Cleveland, it was like, he's not staying, and then it became like after every win after every loss, we go on a losing streak, it's 'Oh this is why he' leaving'......Teammates got to answer these questions, my coach has got to answer these questions, GM, everybody's got to answer the question," explained Mitchell. Advertisement "I think for me, just being able to call a place home, be there and want to be there, and be like, 'Alright, cool, this is where I'm at .' Obviously, that was huge, I'm in a new place in my life too…For me, just to be happy with Donovan, not even Donovan Mitchell," said the 28-year-old, adding how the stability also helped elevate his game to the next level. Pairing with Rudy Gobert on the Jazz didn't deliver The Nuggets initially drafted Mitchell as the 13th pick, only to be traded to the Jazz. He announced his arrival from the get-go, made the All-Rookie First Team, and was crowned Dunk Contest winner. The following years saw him emerge as a perennial All-Star and the face of the franchise. However, his pairing with defensive savant Rudy Gobert didn't see the desired results. Advertisement Individually, both Mitchell and Gobert were fine talents, but they failed to complement each other on the court. There is no denying that the Jazz duo did bring success to Salt Lake City, but their ceiling remained in the semi-finals. Facing back-to-back exits and reports of rising tensions between the two stars led to the management breaking up the duo, with Gobert getting traded to the Timberwolves and Mitchell to the Cavaliers. Mitchell never agreed with the title or bust season narrative No doubt, this was the closest the Cavaliers had been to winning a title since LeBron James left in 2018. Starting the season with a 15-game winning streak, COTY Kenny Atkinson put together a well-oiled machine. Despite a few hiccups towards the end, they held the fort. Advertisement It was suddenly a championship or bust season for the Cleveland, something Mitchell brushed aside, saying, "It took Boston seven or eight years to win a championship. They've been with those guys, plug and play different guys, and whatnot. So, it takes time." Yet to make his first conference finals appearance, Mitchell's loss against the Pacers marked his fourth semi-final elimination. As far as his performances go, there have hardly been any complaints, but time is certainly running out for him. All said and done, there are high expectations from the Spida, considering his ceiling of potential greatness. Thunder GM lauds Jalen Williams' toughness with wrist surgery on deck
June 30 - Thunder All-Star forward Jalen Williams played through a torn ligament in his right wrist for the entire postseason and is scheduled for surgery, Oklahoma City general manager Sam Presti said Monday. Williams, 24, averaged 23.6 points per game in the NBA Finals as the Thunder won their first league championship. He averaged 21.4 points and 5.5 rebounds in the playoffs after being selected All-NBA Third Team in the regular season. He first sprained his wrist in February. The tear occurred near the end of the regular season. "The part that I'm most impressed with is, in our modern era, when someone has a poor performance or they're not playing to their capability in a game and there's a lot of attention on it, you often see a little birdie make sure that everybody knows that the player is not 100 percent," Presti said Monday of Williams. "Never happened with this guy. Not one time. He powered through. He showed incredible mental endurance and security in himself. I've said this many times: The best players are secure players. And I really thought it was pretty impressive that he just kept moving along with no excuses -- and obviously played his best basketball down the stretch of the season." Presti said the wrist injury and surgery are routine and the Thunder anticipate Williams being available for training camp and the start of the regular season. "It's not an injury that people have a problem recovering from," Presti said at his end-of-season news conference Monday. "It's pretty common." --Field Level Media

Anthony Edwards Hailed As A Potential Top-100 Player By Gilbert Arenas
Anthony Edwards Hailed As A Potential Top-100 Player By Gilbert Arenas originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Minnesota Timberwolves are lucky to have Anthony Edwards as the team's superstar. He has developed well since he was drafted first overall in 2020. He has grown from being a promising athletic freak to becoming one of the league's best players. Advertisement With his status as an All-NBA player, Edwards has cemented himself as one of the best representatives of today's basketball generation. Since he is only 23, Edwards has limitless potential to tap into. Taking that into account, people like Gilbert Arenas see Edwards as a surefire all-time great when he retires. Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn Images Edwards has earned his status as one of the best players in the league. He developed from being an athletic slasher to becoming one of the most versatile scorers in the league. He was initially seen as a non-shooter, but he became the NBA's most prolific three-point shooter in the 2024-25 season. Off the court, Edwards is also a captivating person. He exudes charisma, which has made him a superstar on and off the court. That has made him the best candidate to become a player who will be remembered for a long time. Advertisement Related: DeMarcus Cousins Gets Honest About What Makes Anthony Edwards A Superstar Arenas Believes Edwards Could Become An All-Time Great The Timberwolves' president of basketball operations, Tim Connelly, boldly declared Edwards would be one of the greatest players in NBA history. That was an ambitious claim, but he truly believes in his players. This declaration sent waves across the league, which got to Gilbert Arenas and his Gil's Arena co-hosts. They discussed what makes Edwards such an intriguing superstar compared to his peers. "How he started off, you know, four years now made the playoffs every single year. His winning percentage is there, his winning accolades is there. Yeah, he's in that lane to be a Top 100 player of all time," Arenas said on his show. "Sometimes, the problem becomes when you compare them to the greats, you compare the person at 23 to the person you remember them the most." Advertisement Arenas also made a great point about the comparisons between Edwards and the all-time shooting guard greats like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. He does not stack up to them, but he is doing a fine job at living up to their status as the best shooting guard in the league. Edwards Has A Long Career Ahead Of Him At 23, Edwards finished his fifth NBA season. Since he is still young, Ant-Man has more untapped potential. That is what makes him such a scary player to play against because everyone knows this is not the best version of Anthony Edwards. Everyone within the Timberwolves organization knows they are lucky to have such a big star on their roster. Connelly knows this, which is why he wants to provide Edwards with the help he needs to compete for a championship. He has done a mighty fine job in recent years, as they only need to get over the hump. If they can do it, they will be one of the scariest teams to go against because they have Edwards leading the charge. Jokic makes All-NBA First Team, history upon history
DENVER (KDVR) — Denver Nuggets players and fans are still feeling the brunt of a heartbreaking loss, only one win away from the Western Conference Finals. Tornadoes reported in northeast Colorado amid storms Friday Advertisement There will come a day when Jokic laces up his 'Peppa Steppas' for the last time, and Colorado sports fans will miss watching their all-time great make basketball look ridiculously easy. Jokic already has a Hall of Fame career and the 2024-25 NBA season only enhanced his resume in what may have been his best year yet. Jokic just missed out on his fourth MVP award, taking second place in the vote, but was compensated with a spot on the All-NBA First Team after a season where he made plenty of history in a way that only he can. Jokic was voted unanimously for First Team honors and joins fellow players, including: Advertisement Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Oklahoma City Thunder Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks Jayson Tatum, Boston Celtics Donovan Mitchell, Cleveland Cavaliers During the season, Jokic broke personal records and NBA records, and even his second-place finish in MVP voting puts him in rarified air. He joined Larry Bird as the only other player to finish in at least second place for MVP voting in five consecutive seasons. This is the fifth time Jokic has made the All-NBA First team and the seventh consecutive year he has made one of the three All-NBA teams, a franchise record. He did so by averaging a career-high 29.7 points, 10.2 assists, 1.8 steals and made a career-high 41.7% of his three-point attempts, in a season where he became the third player ever to average a triple double, and the first to finish in the top three spots across the NBA in four major statistical categories. Jokic recorded 34 triple-doubles, the most by a center in NBA history, beating out statistical enigma Wilt Chamberlain, who had the previous record of 31. With those 34 triple-doubles, he bypassed Magic Johnson on the all-time NBA triple-doubles list. The 2024-25 season was Jokic's eighth straight year leading his team in points, assists and rebounds. No other player has done that for more than four seasons.
