Jemele Hill Reacts To Caitlin Clark's All-Star Voting Results

Jemele Hill Reacts To Caitlin Clark's All-Star Voting Results originally appeared on The Spun. Jemele Hill came to WNBA players' defense this week following the results of Caitlin Clark's All-Star vote. Advertisement After receiving a massive amount of fan support ahead of this year's All-Star festivities in Indy, the love for Caitlin was less enthusiastic among her peers in the W— who placed her ninth in the league's player vote. That led to a lot of pushback from women's basketball viewers who feel there's some jealousy at play when it comes to the feelings surrounding the reigning Rookie of the Year. But Hill attempted to make sense of it in a lengthy post to X: "If I'm understanding the WNBA players vote correctly, they did not rank Caitlin Clark 9th. Many of the players did not rank her in the top 4 based off her play THIS SEASON — which is valid," Jemele argued. Advertisement "Fever have played 16 games. She's missed half of those games with injuries ... She's also averaging a league high 6 turnovers a game, shooting 29 percent from three and 39 percent from the field," Hill continued. "Let's just be real — those aren't All Star numbers by any objective measure. But popularity drives All Star games," the former ESPN personality admitted. "I have zero problem with CC being an AS because she's who millions of fans want to see. Still a great player, but no she has not had a great season." "But I get it," Hill concluded. "Some of y'all just want to drive the jealous Black women taking down a darling white woman narrative no matter what — even though Paige Bueckers and Sabrina Ionescu were both voted in the top 4." She's not the best player in the WNBA yet. However, she's certainly coming for the crown. Advertisement Clark's 1,293,536 fan votes were the most in league history. Michele Tafoya claims 'jealousy' led to Caitlin Clark's shocking WNBA player vote: 'It's so dumb'

Caitlin Clark's All-Star voting among WNBA players, who ranked her ninth-best among guards in the league, had social media in a frenzy wondering how that could be the case. One of those who voiced their opinion was Michele Tafoya, the ex-NFL reporter, who believes Clark's peers are "jealous" of her. Tafoya made an appearance on OutKick's "Don't @ Me with Dan Dakich," where she furthered her thoughts on the matter. "I thought we were turning a corner here, Dan," she said to Dakich. "I thought we saw her teammates having her back. I thought we were maybe settling down with this obsession of Caitlin Clark. "It really feels almost like a hatred toward her, but it's clearly a jealousy. She's got that great State Farm commercial where everything's better from the logo – terrific ad, very smart. So, America loves her, the fans clearly love her, the media likes her. But the players can't stand her." Clark, a WNBA All-Star Game captain along with the Minnesota Lynx's Napheesa Collier, finished first in fan voting and fourth in media voting among guards. But Tafoya, like many others, couldn't believe Clark was so far down the list. Some believe it could be because she's struggled in recent games with her jumpshot, while others spoke about her playing just nine of the Fever's 16 games so far this season due to injuries. Tafoya didn't want to hear it. "Ninth-best guard in the league? Don't try to give me the excuses of, 'Well, she's been struggling lately,' or, 'She missed some games with injury.' Come on, this is insanity and I think it's an activist vote by the women of the WNBA, who simply cannot stand her success. It's so dumb and it's so childish," she said. Paige Bueckers, Dallas Wings rookie and first overall pick in this year's WNBA Draft, was ranked the top guard from three phases of voting: fans, media and players. She was second in fan rank, fifth in media and fourth among players. The Atlanta Dream's Allisha Gray, one of the WNBA All-Star starters, finished first in media rank and player rank, while players like Seattle's Skylar Diggins, New York's Sabrina Ionescu and Natasha Cloud, Washington's Brittney Sykes and more finished above Clark in terms of player rank. Clark is averaging 18.2 points, 8.9 assists, five rebounds and 1.6 steals over 33.3 minutes per game this season. Only the Phoenix Mercury's Alyssa Thomas – who could be among the 12 All-Star Game reserves, which will be selected by the league's head coaches and announced this Sunday – has more assists per game (9.3), and she's touched the hardwood in 12 contests this season. Clark also received 1,293,526 votes from the fans. While Clark has been integral in the rise of the WNBA's popularity since breaking rookie and league records last season with the Fever, there have been many contentious moments with game opponents. This season, a physical altercation broke out against the Connecticut Sun, during which Clark was hit in the face and shoved to the ground during a play. Later in the game, Clark's teammate, Sophie Cunningham, retaliated against Sun guard Jacy Sheldon in another scuffle that led to ejections. And, of course, Clark was the center of national sports conversation after instances against the Sun, Chicago Sky and others. Why did Caitlin Clark receive low All-Star Game votes from her WNBA peers?

The WNBA's All-Star voting drew attention on Tuesday when it was revealed that Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark ranked significantly lower among her peers than she did among fans or the media. Clark finished first among fan voting for guards, but ninth in WNBA player voting for her position. She was third in media voting, garnering a weighted score that will make her an All-Star Game starter for the event on her home court in Indianapolis on July 19. Advertisement All-Star starter selection combines online fan voting (50 percent) with player votes (25 percent) and media votes (25 percent). Because Clark received the most fan votes (1.3 million), she will be a team captain. Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier, who received 1.2 million fan votes, will be the other captain. * denotes starter A variety of factors could account for the discrepancy in voting between the fans and players, but Indiana coach Stephanie White said she doesn't want to focus on the vote tallies. 'I don't really care about it,' she said Tuesday before the Fever played the Lynx for the Commissioner's Cup championship. 'I don't know why. One of my things and we talk about this all time, we control the things that we can control, and we keep the main thing the main thing. All-Star is amazing and it's such an incredible honor, and we're excited that it's in Indy.' Clark has missed seven of the Fever's 16 games due to quad and groin injuries. Her 3-point shooting is down from 34.4 percent last season to 29.5 percent. Her scoring has taken a slight dip from last season to 18.2 points per game, but she ranks second in the league with 8.9 assists per game and adds five rebounds per contest. Clark's teammate Kelsey Mitchell ranked sixth in player votes for guards (as well as third in fan votes and 11th in media votes). Mitchell's scoring average is similar to Clark's (18.2 points per game) with fewer assists (2.9) and rebounds (1.9). She's shooting 45.1 percent from the field and 35.4 percent on 3-pointers, which are better percentages than Clark's. The three other guards selected as starters are four-time All-Star Sabrina Ionescu, three-time All-Star Allisha Gray and rookie Paige Bueckers. Notably, Bueckers, who finished second in fan votes for guards and fourth in player votes for guards, has missed five games for the Wings due to injury. The Fever also will be represented at the All-Star Game by Aliyah Boston, whose tallies also showed a gap between fan and player votes. She was second in fan vote for forwards, but was ninth in player vote. Six starter spots were available for forwards, compared to four for guards. 'I'm proud of her. She's put in the work,' White said of Boston. 'She's playing outstanding basketball. I think it's a great honor for her to be named a starter.' Advertisement The final 12 All-Star positions will be selected by the league's 13 coaches. Clark and Collier will draft their two teams after the 22 players are finalized during a live show of ESPN's WNBA Countdown on July 8. Fans, player and media voting was rank-choice voting separated into six frontcourt players and four guards. Coaches will select 12 players divided into three guards, five front-court players and four players at either position regardless of conference. They are not able to vote for their own players.
