Wrexham captain on potential signing of All Whites defender

Wrexham AFC captain James McClean says the players will welcome All White Liberato Cacace with open arms, if the New Zealand defender completes a reported move to the Welsh club. The two previously crossed paths when the All Whites and the Republic of Ireland battled out a 1-1 draw in 2023. 'In my last ever Ireland game, we played New Zealand and he played that night,' McClean told Breakfast. 'I know he did quite well at [Italian side] Empoli last season, but I wouldn't say I know very much more than that." Mclean said he looks forward to the competition new players at the club bring. ADVERTISEMENT 'This club's moving forward all the time - the more you go up the divisions, the better players you're going to sign. 'If he does sign, we'll welcome him with open arms like we always do, and we'll relish the competition for places because it's only healthy.' Wrexham skipper McClean has enjoyed the welcome extended to the side in the capital 'It was incredible, we got to see and embrace the culture here. 'For me, it was a great experience to see the haka up close and personal for the first time here.' ADVERTISEMENT The morning's headlines in 90 seconds, including a Wellington house fire, the UK lowers the voting age, and the Obamas joke about divorce rumours. (Source: 1News) He admitted he was still surprised by the global level of support the Welsh club has generated. 'Obviously, we know the support in America, given the owners and where they're from, but to come over here and see the fanbase and the support and how big it is, it just shows you where this club is at. 'It's massive worldwide.' Watch the Phoenix take on Wrexham live and free on TVNZ+ and TVNZ2 from 4.30pm

EXCLUSIVE: Louis Vuitton and Felix Team on 2025 Silver Lockit Collection for UNICEF

PARIS — Louis Vuitton has teamed with K-pop star Felix for this year's edition of its Silver Lockit jewelry collection, designed to raise funds for UNICEF. The French luxury house tapped the Stray Kids member, a Vuitton brand ambassador since 2023, to help design the line, which features its signature miniature lock engraved with a blue heart and the word 'dream.' More from WWD EXCLUSIVE: MarcyPen Capital Partners Invests in the Gld Shop EXCLUSIVE: Louis Vuitton's New Travel Campaign Highlights the Beauty of China Nordstrom Taps Boutique Muse as Anchor for Reimagined Jewelry Hall at NYC Flagship 'The heart represents love, compassion and empathy,' said Felix, who is also a UNICEF goodwill ambassador for South Korea. 'I wanted the blue in this collection to symbolize that sense of peace and security for the children we are supporting, giving them the freedom to dream of a brighter future,' he said in a Q&A. 'It's a soothing color that evokes feelings of serenity and optimism.' Made of certified recycled silver, the collection consists of an earring, a bracelet available in either a silver chain or cord version, and a pendant. For the 2025 edition, the cord bracelet and pendant are available in four colors: yellow, blue, pink and black. The limited-edition line will be available in stores worldwide from July 18, with the exception of the Silver Lockit yellow cord, which is an online exclusive. The brand donates $100 for every cord bracelet or earring sold, and $200 for every silver bracelet or pendant. Vuitton's partnership with the United Nations agency for children began in 2016, and sales of the Silver Lockit collection have raised $24 million so far. In 2024, the brand supported UNICEF programs in Madagascar, Guatemala, Haiti and Vietnam. 'It's inspiring to see Louis Vuitton using its influence to raise awareness and funds for the world's most vulnerable children. And UNICEF is doing vital work in defending children' rights and providing them with the support they need,' Felix said. 'Every child deserves the chance to grow up in a safe, healthy and nurturing environment, with access to education, health care and protection,' he added. Celebrities including Nicole Kidman, Chloë Grace Moretz, Léa Seydoux, Jennifer Connelly and Millie Bobby Brown have supported the charity initiative. Former All White and A-League teammate admit roles in betting scandal

Two former A-League soccer players have admitted engaging in a betting corruption scandal after they were paid to receive yellow cards during games. Ex-Macarthur Bulls team captain Ulises Davila, and midfielders Kearyn Baccus and former All White Clayton Lewis were charged with manipulating yellow cards during games in 2023 and 2024. Davila, 33, allegedly acted as the conduit between the southwest Sydney team's players and an unnamed criminal group in Colombia, organising for the cards to occur during particular games. Baccus, 33, and Lewis, 27, were allegedly paid up to $10,000 (NZ$10,899) by the former captain to deliberately receive the referee-issued cautions for foul play. The midfielders pleaded guilty on Thursday to engaging in conduct that corrupted the betting outcome of an event. ADVERTISEMENT A second charge of participating in a criminal group was withdrawn. (Source: Getty) Lewis had previously pleaded not guilty to both charges, but reversed his plea to one of the charges after negotiating with prosecutors. Both former A-League players maintained blank faces as their pleas were entered. The pair would be sentenced in September. Davila, the alleged local ringleader of the criminal group behind the betting corruption, has yet to enter pleas to the nine charges he faced. He would return to court in August. ADVERTISEMENT Gaming-machine records and bookmaker statements from BetPlay Colombia, Bet365 New Jersey and Bet365 Bulgaria comprised part of a lengthy brief of evidence being prepared by prosecutors. Police saind the betting scheme led to hundreds of thousands of dollars being paid out in winnings. Davila's contract with Macarthur FC was terminated shortly after his initial arrest, which the team described in a statement as mutual agreement. Baccus was released by the Bulls during a 2024 off-season clean-out and Lewis remained suspended.

Blow to Forest's Champions League hopes as Brentford win 2-0

Photo: AFP Nottingham Forest missed out on a chance to move into the top three in the Premier League, and strengthen hopes of a Champions League berth next season, as Brentford upset them 2-0 in their Premier League clash. Kevin Schade and Yoane Wissa both finished at the end of long clearances from deep in their own half to ensure a surprise away win that keeps alive Brentford's own ambitions of competing in European club competition next season. All White Chris Wood had just one real chance for Forest but headed the ball well wide of the goal. The result kept Forest in sixth place on 60 points while Brentford advanced to 49 points. They remained in 11th place but are now only two points behind eighth placed Fulham. Forest have four games left against Crystal Palace, Leicester City, West Ham and Chelsea. Forest will qualify to compete in the Champions League if they finish in Premier League's top five. They last played in Europe's top club competition in 1980. Meanwhile Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur had good wins in their respective Europa League semi-final first leg games. United beat Atletico Bilbao 3-0 in Spain, while Spurs beat Norway's Bodo/Climt 3-1 in London. In first leg Conference League semi-finals Chelsea beat Djurgarden 4-1 and Real Betis beat Fiorentina 2-1. -Reuters/RNZ

Point to prove: Captain's call as Napier City Rovers look to ignite campaign

The past three weeks has seen them being fortunate to hold on to a 1-0 win over bottom-placed Central League side North Wellington, fall 2-0 to competition leaders the Wellington Phoenix Reserves and then put in a largely disappointing showing last Sunday as they drew 1-1 with second-to-last-placed Upper Hutt City Football. Hoyle said that given what the side wants to achieve this season, only one result would be acceptable against Island Bay United on the road on Saturday; a win. 'There's absolutely no excuses now; we've got to get three points away at Island Bay,' he said. 'If it's scrappy, if it's with quality, it doesn't matter [we just need to win]. We're playing catch-up already early in the season, we've got big ambitions, so we have to go and win.' Four teams from the Central League will qualify for the National League. Under their playing licence, the Wellington Phoenix Reserves are guaranteed one of those spots, regardless of where they finish. The other three top finishers will join them in the 11-team National League. The Wellington Phoenix Reserves and Wellington Olympic are the early pace-setters of the league. Napier City Rovers hold third, Waterside Karori have made the most of a kind draw to start the season to sit in fourth spot, while likely leading National League qualification rivals Miramar Rangers and Western Suburbs (who have both had tough draws for the opening month of the league) are in fifth and eighth spot respectively. The National League was a competition Napier City Rovers excelled in last year, finishing fourth in the top-tier league, missing the grand final by just two competition points. But Hoyle is well aware that if his team are to qualify and then be contenders in New Zealand Football's showpiece domestic league, they have to show a lot more than they did against Upper Hutt City Football, a side coached by former All White Rory Fallon. 'It's frustrating,' Hoyle said after Sunday's 1-1 draw. 'That's dropped points the last two weekends now. 'We've got some problems to solve on the training field and hopefully we can bounce back next week. The result is just frustrating to be honest, we controlled large parts of the game, but just not enough quality in front of goal and then we've conceded a goal. 'When you come up against teams like Upper City at home, you need to maximise points if you want to end up in National League. We've got some problem-solving to do.' The post-match reactions of several of the squad – including Stephen Hoyle who lay on the turf for several minutes – highlighted the frustration over how things haven't gelled yet throughout the squad. One of the main work-ons is finishing. The side have scored just five goals in their opening four matches; three of those were in their first game of the season. As yet no one has truly put their hand up to be the chief provider of the 29 goals forward Oscar Faulds – who is now playing professionally in Luxembourg – hammered home last season. That's not been through a lack of trying. 'We're definitely searching,' Hoyle said of the work ethic shown at training since February. 'On Thursday, we looked amazing in training. I thought we looked great, we had an idea and the game plan was right. But we just didn't bring it on to the pitch; we just didn't perform. 'We can talk about lads working hard, and the lads are an honest group. 'I think it's just finding that quality in the final third [of the pitch]. We need to be scoring more than one goal to put these games to bed.' Last Sunday's result might not have been the one Napier City Rovers wanted – and their attack has been too often misfiring as a unit – but there were still positives to take away from the 1-1 draw. The Hoyle brothers – Jim and older brother Stephen – and Matt Jones were outstanding in the defensive line. Stephen Hoyle was also his side's goal-scorer, firing in a shot after Upper Hutt City Football failed to clear a corner. Forward Max Chretien was heavily involved throughout his time on the pitch and was involved in several promising attacks. Alongside him, Cameron Emerson also got stuck in playing in a more attacking role and higher up the pitch than he did all of last season. Liam Schofield was also outstanding in his first start of the season, providing plenty of spark from midfield, some quality distribution and a succession of well-directed corners that repeatedly troubled Upper Hutt's defence. Schofield – who has been at Napier City Rovers for the past eight seasons – is one of five overseas-born players who are classed as imports by New Zealand Football rules. Just four can feature in a match-day squad, with Schofield coming in to replace Jordan Annear, who is battling a calf strain. 'We brought him in to try and control games which we've been missing,' Hoyle said. 'We've been missing someone to control games. That's one thing that we're working towards.' >> Inside the Rovers video series: Episode 1: Match Fit Advertise with NZME.
