New-look USWNT dominates China in international soccer friendly
The U.S. women's national team downed China, 3-0, largely dominating a Saturday friendly that came with some signs that newer U.S. players are forging strong connections. The USWNT controlled the match from start to finish at Allianz Field, with Catarina Macario and Sam Coffey scoring first-half goals amid long spells of possession. Lindsey Heaps would head home a third early in the second half on an assist from Michelle Cooper, who was lively throughout. Advertisement Lo'eau LaBonta, Cooper's teammate in the NWSL with the Kansas City Current, became the oldest player to gain their first senior USWNT cap, while goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce ultimately had little to do in her second cap. China was initially to be the USWNT's opponent in both matches in this window, but opted instead to play just this one match. The USWNT will instead play Jamaica on Tuesday, June 3. 🎥 A touch of class from Oluwaseyi puts Minnesota ahead
The 2025 MLS has seen one long-range rocket strike after the next this season, and even a few overhead kicks or two, but there's nothing like a cheeky strike to get the blood Minnesota United looks to continue their impressive form across the current season, Canadian striker Tani Oluwaseyi produced a moment of brilliance for their opening goal at home against St. Louis City. After hitting five goals in the opening five fixtures of the season, including back-to-back braces on Matchday's four and five against Sporting KC and Real Salt Lake, Oluwaseyi hit a poor patch in front of goal while failing to find the back of the net in six straight matches. TANI OLUWASEYI BACKHEEL GOAL 😱 — Major League Soccer (@MLS) May 18, 2025 Oluwaseyi's classy goal to break the deadlock at Allianz Field came after he did well to settle Nicolas Romero's header before catching Roman Bürki by surprise, with the 25-year-old looking to work cement his place in Canada's attack moving forward. 📸 Editorial Photo Credit: © Brace Hemmelgarn | 2025 May 10-Imagn Images

David Beckham blasts Minnesota United for "Pink Phony Club" post after Inter Miami defeat
Time running out on Minnesota budget talks, and more headlines Time running out on Minnesota budget talks, and more headlines Time running out on Minnesota budget talks, and more headlines English soccer legend David Beckman is calling out Minnesota United FC for pouring salt on the wounds of Lionel Messi and Inter Miami CF after their 4-1 loss to the Loons on Saturday at St. Paul's Allianz Field. The Loons' social media team made a celebratory post following the victory, with the caption reading, "Pink Phony Club," a reference to pop star Chappell Roan's hit "Pink Pony Club," with pink being one of Miami's club colors. The Loons also posted a photo of a banner that read, "History Over Hype, Culture Over Cash," referencing the Loons' seniority in Major League Soccer and its much smaller wallet. Beckham, Miami's co-owner and president, commented in the post, "Show a little respect @mnufc be elegant in triumph." AP/Instagram Messi — Inter Miami's Argentinian forward, and one of the sport's greatest players — scored his club's only goal of the match, which was just the second time the teams have met on the pitch. The Loons lost 2-1 in the first go-around in June 2022, sans Messi. Saturday's defeat was also Messi's biggest loss of his two-year-old MLS career. Messi, one of pro sports highest-paid athletes, signed a $20.4 million deal with Miami in 2023, a figure CBS Sports noted at the time exceeded "the payrolls of all but three other teams in the league." Hours before Miami's defeat, CBS Sports reported Messi and club officials are still in talks to extend his contract for the 2026 season, when the club is expecting the debut of its new stadium, Miami Freedom Park. The Loons are now fifth place overall in the MLS, one ahead of Miami, and second overall in the Western Conference. Miami is fourth in the Eastern Conference.

David Beckham's anger at lack of ‘respect' after MLS rival's jibe
David Beckham has told Minnesota United to 'show a little respect' after they celebrated thrashing his star-studded Inter Miami team by calling them the 'Pink Phony Club'. Saturday's Major League Soccer game between the sides inflicted on Lionel Messi his worst defeat since moving to the United States as Miami lost 4-1 at a packed Allianz Field. Minnesota, managed by former Manchester United coach Eric Ramsay, basked in the afterglow of that win on Instagram by taking aim at their opponents, whom Beckham co-founded in 2018 and who famously wear pink. One post featured an image of their own players celebrating a goal and featured a part of the MLS standings showing Minnesota in fifth, a point ahead of Beckham's side. The post was captioned 'Pink Phony Club' in a play on words on the Chappell Roan song Pink Pony Club. Beckham, the former Manchester United and England midfielder, responded to the post by writing: 'Show a little respect @mnufc be elegant in triumph.' In another jibe seemingly linked to the city of Minnesota's longer association with professional football down the years, a post featured a photograph of a giant banner and read: 'History over hype. Culture over cash.' The post was captioned: '49 years and counting'. Beckham responded, saying 'respect over everything' in a comment featuring a pink heart emoji. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Minnesota United FC (@mnufc) Miami were formed only in 2020 and won the Leagues Cup in 2023 during Messi's first season in Florida. They topped the regular season standings last term to win the Supporters' Shield, only to bow out in the first round of the MLS play-offs to Atlanta United. Miami are fourth in the Eastern Conference and sixth in the overall table after losing to Minnesota, who are enjoying a fruitful second season under Ramsay. The 33-year-old left United for his current role in February last year and has recently been linked with the Southampton job. Welsh coach Ramsay said after beating Miami: 'I think, for the club as a whole, that was really important. But certainly, for us as a team, to show that we can compete with the very best was really important for us. 'We're obviously in a good place at the moment but we've got to keep that going, we've got to keep working.'

David Beckham calls out MLS rivals to 'show a little respect' after his Inter Miami side are brutally mocked on Instagram following crushing defeat
David Beckham has hit out at Minnesota United in a series of social media comments following Inter Miami's crushing defeat at Allianz Field on Saturday. Beckham, who co-owns the Florida-based MLS side, saw his team crumble in the Upper Midwest of the United States, shipping four to the Loons. The hosts scored two in each half, either side of Lionel Messi 's 10th goal in all competitions this season, to hand Miami their heaviest defeat since the Argentine legend's arrival at the club in 2023. Following the match, Minnesota United 's social media team took to Instagram to mock Beckham's club. The account posted a picture of celebrations accompanied by the caption 'Pink Phony Club', a play on words on Chappell Roan 's smash hit song and a reference to Miami's home kit. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star did not take kindly to the post, and commented 'Show a little respect @mnufc be elegant in triumph.' in response to the jibe. There was evidently bad blood between the two clubs ahead of this match, with Minnesota fans displaying a banner that criticised the Inter Miami project, which Beckham has been spearheading since 2014. Since the club made its debut in 2020, Miami have brought in superstars such as Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and of course, Messi, with an aim to become the US' top team. And while fans all over the world have taken notice of the project, Minnesota supporters were clear with how they felt about it as their tifo read 'History over hype, culture over cash' - a clear jibe at Beckham and the club. The St Paul-based club decided to post the banner on social media with the caption '49 years and counting, which once again prompted Beckham to snap back. 'Respect over everything @mnufc,' he wrote. Miami currently sit fourth in the Eastern Conference, with a game in hand over the teams above them, and are set for a busy spell with the revamped Club World Cup approaching next month. Beckham had already been dealing with a lot ahead of this spat. The sporting icon turned 50 years old earlier this month and threw an elaborate party, which the likes of Gary Neville attended. A week after the bash, it was announced that both Beckham and Neville are spearheading a new ownership group at League Two side Salford City – with the rest of their former Class of '92 stars stepping away. The former United team-mates already held a 60 per cent share at the Greater Manchester club along with Paul Scholes, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt and Ryan Giggs, prior to the anouncement. Once again, Beckham took issue with the graceless posts from the social media team However, that quartet has now handed over their shares while Beckham and Neville have brought in new partners and investment of between £11-15million as they target Championship football within five years. Taking to Instagram to share the news, Beckham wrote: 'Salford played such an important role in my life growing up... it's where I trained with United alongside my best mates every day, it's where I bought my first house and where me and Victoria lived. 'I'm so proud to be part of a new ownership group alongside my mate @gneville2 as we begin the next chapter of Salford's journey.
