Chris Pine and Lily-Rose Depp Join Alien Invasion Comedy ALPHA GANG — GeekTyrant

The Zellner Brothers' ( Sasquatch Sunset ) upcoming alien invasion comedy Alpha Gang just landed a major boost in star power. Chris Pine ( Star Trek ), Lily-Rose Depp ( Nosferatu ), Kelvin Harrison Jr. ( Mufasa: The Lion King ), and Doona Bae ( Rebel Moon ) have officially joined the ensemble cast. The film centers on a team of alien invaders sent to conquer Earth, who disguise themselves as a 1950s leather-clad biker gang. The mission? Ruthless domination, until they're infected with the most dangerous human affliction of all… emotion. Character details are still under wraps, but the cast is shaping up to be one of the most eclectic lineups in recent memory. Cate Blanchett, Léa Seydoux, Dave Bautista, and Riley Keough were previously announced, making this a stacked roster of heavy hitters. When Alpha Gang was first revealed back in October 2024, Channing Tatum, Zoë Kravitz, and Steven Yeun were part of the ensemble, but they've since exited. Sources cite a mix of factors, mostly scheduling issues. Pine is best known for his turn as Captain Kirk in the Star Trek films and is coming off projects like his directorial debut Poolman , Don't Worry Darling , and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves . Depp is riding high after her acclaimed performance in Robert Eggers' Nosferatu opposite Nicholas Hoult and Bill Skarsgård. Harrison Jr., recently cast as Beetee in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping , has appeared in Chevalier , Elvis , O'Dessa , and Mufasa: The Lion King . He's also set to portray Jean-Michel Basquiat in the indie Samo Lives . With a concept that sounds like a genre-bending blast and a cast this strong, Alpha Gang is shaping up to be an intriguing indie project. Source: Deadline

Chris Pine and Lily-Rose Depp added to Alpha Gang cast

Chris Pine, Lily-Rose Depp, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Doona Bae have joined the cast of Alpha Gang. The quartet have become the latest additions to the ensemble of the sci-fi comedy film from directors the Zellner brothers. They join previously announced stars Cate Blanchett, Lea Seydoux and Dave Bautista. When Alpha Gang was first announced last October, Channing Tatum, Zoe Kravitz and Steven Yeun were all set to be in the cast but have since dropped out for reasons that are unclear. Insiders have attributed their exits to a multitude of factors, including scheduling issues. The flick follows a group of alien invaders who are sent to conquer Earth disguised as a leather-clad 1950s biker gang. The extraterrestrials are ruthless in their mission until they fall victim to the most contagious human condition of them all – emotion. David and Nathan Zellner are both directing and producing the film while Blanchett and Coco Francini are producing for their Dirty Films banner. The pair said in a joint statement previously: "The Zellner brothers' work never fails to surprise and delight us. "In Alpha Gang, they have created a far-out world in order to lampoon something much closer to home: The hilarious, absurd, and peculiar truth of the human condition." Pine is no stranger to sci-fi as he portrayed Captain James T. Kirk in three Star Trek movies, although he claimed last year that he was in the dark about a fourth movie in the rebooted franchise and was shocked to find out that The Flight Attendant creator Steve Yockey had been hired to write the script for the potential project. The 44-year-old actor told Business Insider: "I honestly don't know. "There was something in the news of a new writer coming on board. I thought there was already a script, but I guess I was wrong, or they decided to pivot. As it's always been with Trek, I just wait and see." It wasn't the first time that Chris has bemoaned the lack of clarity about a possible fourth film as he complained that the cast are always the "last people" to find out about new developments. The Wonder Woman star said: "In Star Trek land, the actors are usually the last people to find out anything. I know costume designers that have read scripts before the actors. "It doesn't really foster the greatest sense of partnership, but it's how it's always been. I love the character. I love the people. I love the franchise. But to try to change the system in which things are created – I just can't do it. I don't have the energy." The fourth Star Trek movie has been stuck in development hell for several years but Roddenberry Entertainment chief Trevor Roth told fans to expect a new film in the "very near future" last year. He told Screen Rant: "I am not able to say much, but I can say that it is Paramount's intent to figure out the Star Trek side of movies and what's going on there. There's every intent of a new movie coming out in the very near future. "There's a lot of secrecy around what's going to happen there. But there is a plan getting into place. And we're very excited to see it return to the big screen."

Cate Blanchett's retiring from acting? I'll believe it when I see it

Cate Blanchett is an actor's actor. Cate Blanchett is the type of actor whose characters – flinty, steely, sly, sophisticated – are hardly distinguishable from the person herself. She speaks with the jarringly refined accent of an alien trained only on stage melodramas. She does not laugh; she titters. She does not walk; she glides. She does not debase herself with the prosaic concerns of you or I. This is why it is very hard to believe that she is 'giving up'. In an interview with the Radio Times on Monday, Blanchett suggested she was no longer an actor. 'My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. I am serious about giving up acting,' she said. '[There are] a lot of things I want to do with my life.' What might these 'things' even look like? Granted, the two-time Oscar winner has other projects on the boil: she is working extensively with the UN, she is running a very prolific production company, she is walking down brutalist corridors and opening her eyes very slowly for Giorgio Armani. That's not to mention her three films currently in development: as an actor in Jim Jarmusch's Father, Mother, Sister, Brother (due later this year); as both actor and producer in sci-fi comedy Alpha Gang and Ben Stiller's The Champions. But what does a grand dame do with her downtime? Blanchett is not ordering a coffee; her piercing gaze would make a barista die instantly. Blanchett is not visiting the hairdresser; like Tilda Swinton, she simply wills her blondness into existence. She'd hardly be the first performer to exaggerate their commitment to retirement. Maybe she'll pull a Daniel Day-Lewis, who exited the industry after Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread in 2017 – only to return for an upcoming film directed by his son. None of Blanchett's children have entered the film biz thus far – though her eldest son was purportedly '[performing] his own version of Hamlet' at age nine, which would sound like an uppity fiction for anyone except a child of Blanchett's. Ophelia calls. Or maybe Blanchett could take inspiration from her recent colleague Steven Soderbergh, who directed her in this year's spy caper Black Bag. 'For the foreseeable future, the movie door is closed,' Soderbergh averred in 2013 – before proceeding to make 11 films in a decade. Lying! Isn't it the best? We could also peer outside Hollywood entirely – to the equally lawless plains of pop music. Look at Elton, who began his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in 2018 – and ended it in 2023 after making $939m from 330 shows, the third highest-grossing tour of all time. Or Cher – who embarked on a similarly tortuous farewell tour from 2002 to 2005, only to return with the aptly named extravaganza Here We Go Again from 2018 to 2020. Retirement, these days, is incredibly lucrative. When Blanchett launches a Vegas residency playing her character in Blue Jasmine, consider me front and centre. Then again, not all retirements have been fake-outs. Despite no official statement, Rihanna hasn't released an album since 2016 – though Fenty Beauty has made her a billionaire in the intervening years. Is Blanche by Blanchett on the horizon? When Blanchett launches her cosmetics line, you can say you read it here first. Finally, representation for people with perfect complexions and flaxen tresses.
