Marco Alves named Al-Arabi coach as club prepares for new season

KUWAIT CITY, July 9: Al-Arabi Club has officially appointed Portuguese coach Marco Cesar Pereira Alves to lead the club's first football team as preparations begin for the upcoming 2025–2026 season. Alves replaces Nasser Al-Shatti, the Kuwaiti coach who led Al-Arabi for two consecutive seasons. Despite notable achievements — including finishing as runner-up in the Zain Premier League and the Crown Prince Cup, as well as reaching the Amir's Cup final (postponed due to regional circumstances) — both sides reached a mutual decision to part ways. While Alves may not have an extensive head coaching résumé, he brings considerable experience as an assistant coach. His past roles include stints with Sharjah (UAE) and Al-Taawoun (Saudi Arabia), as well as several Portuguese clubs, including Vitória Guimarães, Trofense, Chaves, Moreirense, and Gil Vicente. He has also obtained the prestigious UEFA Pro License, qualifying him to manage both top-tier European clubs and national teams. Alves and his assistant staff are expected to arrive in Kuwait within the next two days to finalize contract details, ahead of their first official duty: leading the team's preseason training session on Tuesday. Al-Arabi will begin its competitive campaign on August 12, facing Maziya Sports of the Maldives in a critical play-off match for a spot in the group stage of an upcoming international tournament. One of the new coaching staff's first major responsibilities will be finalizing the club's foreign player lineup. The club has renewed contracts with its two Nigerian players, Emmanuel Iwala and Christopher John, but opted not to retain Sofiane Bouchar (Algeria), Hamza Khaba (Morocco), and Kamil Al-Aswad (Bahrain). Al-Arabi's management has been actively scouting foreign talent to strengthen the squad ahead of the Zain Premier League, which kicks off on September 12. Among the latest names linked to the club is Egyptian striker Marawan Hamdi, currently playing for Pyramids FC.

Euro 2025: Long VAR review of 4-plus minutes decides no penalty for Denmark against Sweden

GENEVA (AP) — A video review of more than four minutes was needed to decide Denmark should not be awarded a penalty against Sweden early in their Women's European Championship game on Friday. Brazilian referee Edina Alves was whistled and jeered by fans during the long delay. She studied the incident on a fieldside monitor before deciding to award a free kick to Sweden instead. Play eventually resumed in the 11th minute, fully five minutes after the incident in question in the Sweden penalty area. A free kick awarded for a foul against Denmark captain Pernille Harder was lofted toward the star forward who tangled with the falling Sweden winger Madelen Janogy. Harder was unable to control the ball which ran to safety toward Sweden goalkeeper Jennifer Falk. Replays of the incident eventually showed Janogy had herself been tripped by a Denmark opponent on the edge of the penalty area as she ran back to defend the cross. Alves was invited to referee at Euro 2025 as part of an exchange program between European soccer body UEFA and South America's CONMEBOL. After seven minutes of stoppage time at the end of the half, Janogy and Alves stood and spoke together. The two seemed to be explaining their actions and shook hands before leaving the field with the score still 0-0. ___ AP soccer:

Matthew McConaughey Shares Rare Look Into Camila Alves Marriage

Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves are forgetful when it comes to this marriage milestone. The actor shared an Access Hollywood clip to his Instagram, in which Alves says "we just had one of those moments again." McConaughey and Alves tied the knot in Austin, Texas in McConaughey and Camila Alves have been married for over a decade, but even they still forget their anniversary. In a new video posted to the actor's Instagram yesterday, McConaughey shared that while they may not remember the date, they always "try to remember the meaning." In the Access Hollywood clip, McConaughey and Alves are wished a happy 13th anniversary. The couple tied the knot in Austin, Texas in 2012. "Is that it?" the couple asks in response. "Oops, we just had one of those moments again," Alves reveals. "This joke has happened many times before and we don't mean for it to happen, but for whatever reason, Camila and I never remember our anniversary," McConaughey explains. "We've been busted in many a red carpet line." McConaughey and Alves share three children together: Levi, Vida, and Livingston, who were born in 2008, 2010, and 2012, respectively. In April, the family made a rare public appearance at the 13th annual Mack, Jack & McConaughey Gala. It marked their first red carpet outing together in a year. Matthew founded the organization with football coach Mack Brown and country singer Jack Ingram, and it has raised more than $61 million for charitable ventures, specifically organizations dedicated to children's education, health, and wellness. Matthew and Camila's eldest son is set to make his acting debut alongside Chris Pratt in Way of the Warrior Kid, Deadline reported. In his first-ever red carpet interview, Levi shared the advice he's received from his dad, whose career spans over three decades. 'I mean, he gave me a lot of advice, and he was able to mentor me in a couple different ways,' Levi told People. 'But I'd say the main thing for acting—and, pardon my French—is no bullshit in your bones and own what you're doing and make a choice regardless if that ends up being the right one or the wrong one. Commit to it, and know what you're saying.' Read the original article on InStyle

About 40 people on Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket arrested by ICE Tuesday

About 40 people were arrested by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers after getting pulled over on Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket on Tuesday. On Martha's Vineyard, ICE agents working with the FBI, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the U.S. Coast Guard were seen making traffic stops in unmarked vehicles on May 27, MassLive's media partner, the Vineyard Gazette, reported. One video shared on social media showed a masked officer talking to a driver in an L&R Electrical Services van. Thiago Alves, owner of Rhode Island-based L&R Electrical Services, confirmed to the newspaper that one of his workers was stopped by ICE and FBI agents. His employee — who he said has a green card — was questioned, then released. 'They questioned my guys looking for paperwork,' Alves said. Other trade workers on the island were also stopped by immigration officers on Tuesday, Alves told the Gazette. 'My guy said they are stopping all the work vans. It's nothing against [us], it's pretty much everyone,' he said. One Martha's Vineyard woman, who asked to be anonymous for fear of reprisal, told the Gazette that she saw multiple traffic stops and arrests by federal law enforcement while agents driving around Vineyard Haven Tuesday morning. 'They were just grabbing people out of their cars,' she said. On Nantucket, several people were seen being taken off the island via a U.S. Coast Guard cutter in handcuffs, MassLive's media partner, The Inquirer and Mirror, reported Tuesday. The Nantucket Police Department was aware the operation was going to take place but did not assist federal agents in any way, Lt. Angus MacVicar said Tuesday. 'We were notified [Monday] that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (I.C.E) would be arriving today. We were not asked to support their operation in any way or have we assisted today,' MacVicar said in a statement. In total, ICE said the operation ended in about 40 arrests, including a notorious MS-13 street gang member and at least one child sex offender. The U.S. Coast Guard helped take the nearly 40 people off of the island. 'This operation highlights FBI Boston's ongoing commitment to supporting our partners at the Department of Homeland Security with identifying and apprehending those who are breaking the law by violating our immigration laws and, in some cases, committing crimes that endanger public safety,' said Kimberly Milka, acting special agent in charge of the FBI's Boston Division.
