Alvin Kamara's 52-yard TD, and Erik McCoy's big assist, make the Saints Play of the Day

We've reached Day 52 in our countdown to the New Orleans Saints' season opener, which means we have an easy pick for the Saints Play of the Day: Alvin Kamara's 52-yard catch-and-go touchdown against the Green Bay Packers back in 2020. You can see it for yourself right here. Kamara was the star of the show on this one, but let's give his blockers some credit. Erik McCoy got out in front for Kamara and actually achieved a higher top speed than the running back; NFL Next Gen Stats tracking data found that McCoy peaked at 16.22 miles per hour compared to Kamara's 15.28. That's insanely impressive. The Saints drew up a good play here with Drew Brees quickly lobbing the ball to Kamara while McCoy paved a path for him to the end zone. It's a shame they couldn't capitalize on this momentum to win the day, but it still turned out to be an electric moment in a game that looked all-but-lost. Brees has already hung up his cleats, and we don't know how many more years Kamara has left in him. So let's take some time to appreciate these stars while they're still wearing black and gold. Saints RB Alvin Kamara brutally roasts Panthers fans, Bank of America Stadium

Apparently, New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara doesn't think much about the vibes from Carolina Panthers fans. In a recent interview with Chat Us Up, Kamara was asked to blindly rank the energy at five opposing NFL stadiums. At first, he gave the lowly No. 5 spot to Raymond James Stadium—home of the NFC South rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But when he was presented with Bank of America Stadium right after, he immediately regretted that decision . . . Kamara, who is entering his ninth pro campaign, has played six career games at Bank of America Stadium. The Saints went a combined 3-3 in those contests, with the latest resulting in a 23-22 victory for the Panthers this past season. Those three losses, in fact, have come in Kamara's last three outings in Charlotte. So maybe not having contributed to a win at Bank of America Stadium since 2019 might be the cause of some other bad energy for the veteran back. ESPN: Saints' skills positions are great at the top, but depth is a major concern

Have Saints done enough to address a weak depth chart at WR, RB? The New Orleans Saints' offensive supporting cast wasn't much to write home about last year. It was a one-man show at running back with everyone not named Alvin Kamara combining for just 613 scrimmage yards. At wide receiver, the team's lack of depth got exposed when injuries sidelined both Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. We saw more out of Foster Moreau and Juwan Johnson at tight end, but they still combined for fewer than 1,000 receiving yards between the two of them. And Taysom Hill's year was cut short with an ACL injury after just eight games. That's enough to justify keeping them in the bottom of the annual rankings from ESPN's Bill Barnwell. New Orleans has slipped further and further year over year, going from a respectable No. 14 (out of 32) back in 2023 to an alarming No. 25 before the 2024 season. Now, in 2025, the Saints offensive skills positions rank at No. 24. Barnwell argues that the Saints are as effective as anyone at the top of the depth chart, and the key is keeping them healthy. But therein lies the problem. Kamara missed three games last season, which is better than Olave (nine absences) or Shaheed (11 games missed), but still a problem when no other running back is stepping up to replace him. Wide receiver Mason Tipton was a training camp standout who didn't do anything in the regular season, and by year's end was benched in favor of walk-on veterans like Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Dante Pettis. It's kind of ironic that the top two tight ends suited up for all 17 games but still left us wanting more. Is bringing back a past-his-prime Brandin Cooks enough to save the Saints at wide receiver? It's now or never for guys at running back like Kendre Miller, Cam Akers, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who are dealing with pressure from rookies like Devin Neal and Marcus Yarns. Johnson will certainly get more opportunities in Kellen Moore's tight end-friendly offense, but his new contract extension almost demands he level up to justify it after averaging 32.2, 28.3, and 31.8 yards per game the last three years, never ranking higher than 21st in his position group. Looking at where the other NFC South teams rank is, well, illuminating. The Saints don't rank last, but it's close, with the Carolina Panthers rounding out the division at 31st after last year's too-optimistic listing at 28th. Both New Orleans and Carolina have lost ground on their rivals, with the Atlanta Falcons getting bumped up from 10th to 9th and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers climbing from 13th to 7th. It's beginning to look like a division of haves and have-nots, and the Saints are on the wrong side of that equation.

New Orleans Saints star Alvin Kamara named 'best value' fantasy RB in 2025

Kamara's average draft position and playmaking ability make for a tempting fantasy pick There are plenty of fair doubts to have about the New Orleans Saints this season, but star running back Alvin Kamara's production doesn't seem to be one of them. As the NFL season gets closer, so do fantasy football preparations. Few are very excited about the Saints as a fantasy powerhouse, but Kamara still stands to make an impact. Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport recently listed Kamara as the best value pick at running back in all of fantasy football. His average draft position is listed as the No. 16 running back and No. 45 player overall. Liking the potential that the New Orleans ballcarrier has in the Kellen Moore offense makes a lot of sense. Over the past three seasons, Kamara has averaged 1,347 yards from scrimmage with six touchdowns and 67 catches, and that is even with him missing a couple of games each year. Now, he will step into a Moore-run offense that will surely have to rely on the running game more heavily with young quarterbacks that will target him in the passing game as a safety valve. While no one is expecting Kamara to put forth a Saquon Barkley-like 2,005-yard campaign on the ground just because he will have the same play caller, expecting better numbers doesn't seem far-fetched. The 29-year-old five-time Pro Bowler will be looking for his first-ever 1,000-yard season on the ground and should still get plenty of opportunities in the passing game with a weaker unit of running backs behind him. Kamara might be the only person on the offense that one can draft in fantasy and not think twice about.

New Orleans adds established veteran as Alvin Kamara backup

The post New Orleans adds established veteran as Alvin Kamara backup appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New Orleans Saints made headlines this offseason since they hired a new head coach in Kellen Moore after he won the Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles. Then, they made headlines again after quarterback Derek Carr announced he was retiring from football due to a prolonged and nagging shoulder injury. It has been a rollercoaster offseason. But now, with mandatory minicamp underway, the headlines have shifted to more basic cuts or signings, including the recent signing of running back Cam Akers after a tryout. Advertisement Akers signed with the Saints after spending two practices during mandatory minicamp. He joins Alvin Kamara, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Kendre Miller, and rookie sixth-round pick Devin Neal in a crowded backfield. Kamara is easily the best running back on the roster, but the battle will be over who wins the job for the second string. The 2020 second-round pick turns 26 in June and still has plenty left in the tank as a running back in the NFL, but it might not be as a starter. The Los Angeles Rams drafted him, and after the 2023 season, traded him to the Minnesota Vikings. Then, Akers signed with the Houston Texans for the 2024-2025 season, but the Texans traded him to the Vikings in his second stint with the team halfway through the season. He finished the year with 104 carries and 444 rushing yards with two touchdowns. Then, he had 14 receptions for 68 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns. Discussing the addition of Akers during Tuesday's media session, Moore complemented what he's seen from the veteran back, as he brings plenty of experience to the table. Advertisement 'Cam is an experienced player,' Moore said via CBS Sports. 'He's done a lot throughout this league. You're always trying to evaluate as many players as possible as you go through this. So we felt like it was a great opportunity, and we are fired up that he wanted to come out here.' His NFL career has been more bumpy than expected, especially after being a five-star recruit out of Mississippi and a standout at Florida State. In five NFL seasons, Akers has totaled 502 rushing attempts for 2,025 yards and 13 touchdowns, and he has also caught 52 passes for 388 yards and four touchdowns. The new-look Saints are in line to utilize their ground game even more without Carr. Tyler Shough, their rookie quarterback, is most likely starting under center, and he will need help to get acclimated to the NFL. Akers brings some nice experience to a running back room with multiple weapons.
