Who is Grace Ashcroft? A look at the Resident Evil Requiem protagonist's intriguing history

Resident Evil Requiem was featured in the June 26 Capcom Spotlight alongside many other upcoming releases from the developer, including Pragmata and Monster Hunter Wilds. The Capcom Spotlight feature consisted of developer interviews that spoke of the creative direction driving the upcoming game, and their reasoning for why they decided on Grace Ashcroft as a protagonist. The developers consider Grace Ashcroft to be a better fit for a horror protagonist than their original idea, who was none other than Leon S. Kennedy. Leon has become an iconic Resident Evil character since his debut in Resident Evil 2, and his headlining of Resident Evil 4. The developers did not think that a man with his experiences would convincingly convey the sense of terror and anxiety they were aiming for. Grace Ashcroft, by comparison, is a lot greener by virtue of being a young FBI analyst. While she's a competent investigator with firearms training, her inexperience makes her a much better fit for the 'addictive horror' experience the developers are aiming for. Grace Ashcroft also has ties to a somewhat obscure online game called Resident Evil Outbreak. Grace Ashcroft is the daughter of Resident Evil Outbreak's Alyssa Ashcroft Though Grace Ashcroft is a new character created for Resident Evil Requiem, her backstory has ties to an older, online title in the franchise called Resident Evil Outbreak. RE Outbreak was originally released in 2003 for the PlayStation 2, and was a co-op game that allowed players to pick one of six Racoon City residents: Kevin Ryman, Mark Wilkins, Jim Chapman, David King, George Hamilton, Cindy Lennox, Yoko Suzuki, and finally, Alyssa Ashcroft. Alyssa Ashcroft was a Raccoon City journalist who was acquainted with Resident Evil 2's Ben Bertolucci. She had a penchant for physical fitness, making her the most action-oriented female character in the game's cast. Alyssa would later resurface after the events of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, where she wrote about the mysterious disappearances in Dulvey, Louisiana that were orchestrated by the malevolent Baker family. Resident Evil Requiem focuses on Alyssa's apparent death Never in my fuckin life did I imagine we'd see RE ENGINE Alyssa Ashcroft from Resident Evil Outbreak! WTF! This is a GOOD DAY INDEED! RE9 LOOKS HORROR AS HORROR GETS!🤯 The reveal trailer for Resident Evil Requiem focuses on Alyssa's daughter, Grace Ashcroft, and reveals that her mother has been dead for eight years. Grace is instructed by her superior at the FBI to investigate a murder that's occurred at the same location that her mother was seemingly killed at. Further plot details about the game are currently scarce, though promotional materials have revealed that it takes place 30 years after the events of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.

Resident Evil Requiem gameplay demo showcases exciting gameplay features and more new details

Image via Capcom. The recently held Summer Game Fest 2025 was almost about to end, when Capcom announced Resident Evil Requiem out of nowhere. This title will serve as the ninth mainline installment of this long franchise, which is going to be launched on February 27, 2026 on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. In this game, we will see the daughter of Resident Evil Outbreak's Alyssa Ashcroft, FBI agent Grace Ashcroft, who will plunge into the horrific journey of finding her mother at the Wrenwood Hotel, exactly where her mother was murdered. During Summer Game Fest 2025, a handful of creators and media outlets were invited for a private viewing of a 20-minute demo gameplay of Resident Evil Requiem. The hands-off demo begins with a horrific display of Grace being strapped onto a medical gurney, absolutely frightened, and hooked to something slowly draining her blood. This scene takes us back to the original reveal trailer where the potential villain of the game was heard saying she is the 'chosen one.' That means, after getting at the Wrenwood Hotel to investigate her mother's death, Grace might have been kidnapped and would have been experimented on later on. However, that's not the case because Grace would eventually be able to free herself and escape that room. But that's where the real trouble begins. Everything in the game is based on the dark-noir theme, dimly lit corridors, flickering lights, where some areas are even pitch dark and can be enlightened by Grace herself with a torch. After getting free, the first-person gameplay begins, which is going to be one of the most exciting features of this game . Players will be able to interchange the gameplay perspectives between first-person and third-person, which is a completely new aspect in this horror series. Also, both the perspectives will have their own respective animations, to make the experience more immersive. Resident Evil Requiem is also going to feature the typical RE puzzles where Grace might have to move boxes in correct orders, or find specific keys for specific locks. At this stage, no guns were seen, meaning Requiem is believed to be based on pure evasion. Just like Outbreak, Grace will be able to distract enemies with different objects and escape from danger. The demo gameplay also showed no signs of clues or any markers, or even any crosshairs as well for steady aim. It was already seen that despite being an FBI personnel, Grace would have been the last person on Earth to be plunged in this situation, as she lacks necessary combat skills at the beginning. More gameplay clips are going to be revealed in the upcoming Gamescom 2025 in August, where fans are going to witness more horror-enthralling actions in Resident Evil Requiem. Capcom confirms 'Resident Evil 9' for February 2026

After nearly two years of radio silence from one of gaming's most iconic horror franchises, Capcom has finally lifted the veil on Resident Evil 9, officially titled Resident Evil Requiem. Set to launch on February 27, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X, this new chapter in the long-running survival horror saga promises a chilling return to the series' roots—with a few major surprises along the way. The reveal trailer for Resident Evil Requiem opens in classic RE fashion: eerie music, flashing lights, and a murder mystery. Players are introduced to Grace Ashcroft, an FBI agent and the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft, the investigative reporter from Resident Evil: Outbreak. Grace is called in to investigate a grisly scene at the very hotel where her mother met her end. Things quickly spiral into the bizarre, as a mysterious illness begins claiming lives and grotesque creatures emerge from the shadows. But the biggest shock? A brief shot confirms that players will revisit the ruins of Raccoon City, the ground zero of the Resident Evil outbreak mythos. The iconic Raccoon City Police Department (RPD) even makes a fleeting appearance, sure to stir nostalgia among longtime fans. Despite these tantalising teases, Capcom is keeping major story and gameplay details under wraps—for now. Gameplay specifics are still a mystery. Persistent rumours suggest Resident Evil 9 may adopt an open-world structure, a significant evolution for the series. However, Capcom hasn't confirmed whether the game will be open-world, linear, or somewhere in between. It's also unclear if the game will continue with the first-person perspective used in Resident Evil 7 and Village, or revert to the third-person camera seen in Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 4 Remake. Given the cinematic presentation of the trailer, third-person seems more likely—but nothing is off the table. What is confirmed is that Resident Evil Requiem will be playable at Gamescom 2025, with Opening Night Live scheduled for August 19. That event will likely provide a deeper dive into the gameplay systems, tone, and structure of the game. According to industry chatter, Resident Evil 9 is poised to kick off a three-year streak of annual Resident Evil releases. If true, this could mean new entries, remakes, or spin-offs in 2027 and 2028. Capcom seems ready to reignite its flagship horror series in a big way, and Requiem looks to be the catalyst. For now, the wait for February 27, 2026 begins—and with it, the speculation, excitement, and dread that only a Resident Evil title can deliver.

Resident Evil Requiem Revealed, But Where's Leon Kennedy?

After a fake-out earlier in Summer Game Fest on Friday, Resident Evil Requiem, or Resident Evil 9, was shown for the first time. The new title is the first mainline entry since Capcom released Resident Evil Village in 2021, and is rumored to feature series stalwart Leon Kennedy. In the trailer, the only person we saw was a character named Grace Ashcroft, who works for the FBI and appears to have ties to Raccoon City. For the most hardcore Resident Evil fans, the name Ashcroft will ring a bell. Alyssa Ashcroft was one of the survivors of the online-only title, Resident Evil Outbreak for the PS2. Alyssa was a journalist who was trapped in Raccoon City during the events of Resident Evil 2, and she, along with other survivors, had to escape the city before it was destroyed. Grace is Alyssa's daughter, and in the trailer, she is going to visit the Remwood Hotel, where Alyssa was murdered. Later in the trailer, images from what appears to be the remnants of a destroyed Raccoon City are shown -- including the police department from RE2 -- so it appears Resident Evil 9 will return to where the series started. Leon's (rumored) return is a big deal for the series, which has made some of its best games with him in the starring role. He first showed up as a rookie cop in Resident Evil 2, which built on the original game's success with more story and improved monsters and level design. He showed up again in Resident Evil 4, which took the series in a new direction by introducing an over-the-shoulder perspective, instead of the usual static camera angles and tank controls. Leon was also one of several playable protagonists in Resident Evil 6, a game that seemed to forget about its survival horror roots. We mostly don't talk about that one. But the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2 was an excellent return to form, bringing RE4's gameplay and much better graphics to a fan-favorite entry. The RE4 remake was a similar success. Resident Evil Requiem is set to drop Feb. 27, 2026, for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, but we're hoping to get our hands on it this weekend. If you want to catch up on older Resident Evil games, Capcom is having a sale that includes basically all the games, including Village and the three remakes.

Resident Evil Requiem announced at Summer Game Fest 2025

While many of us soldier on with the remakes and VR takes on the Resident Evil story, Capcom is prepping the next chapter of the story: Resident Evil Requiem . The sequel was fully revealed as part of Summer Game Fest Live, kicking off a week(ish) of gaming announcements and release dates. Intercutting the starting moments of REs of the past, Capcom did a fake-out, teasing that we'd have to wait a little longer to see Resident Evil Requiem — it turns out they only meant a 30-minute wait. The teaser trailer raised more questions than answers, teasing locations from previous games, like Raccoon City — and its ruined police department. It appears the game will follow Grace Ashcroft, as she tries unveil grim mysteries and, er, gets kidnapped. She's the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft — a Resident Evil character that I do not remember at all. To view this content, you'll need to update your privacy settings. Capcom confirmed a year ago that veteran director Koshi Nakanishi will lead what is definitely not the ninth chapter of Resident Evil. (If you don't count Code Veronica , who even are you?) Nakanishi was involved in the development of R esident Evil Revelations and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard , among other Resident Evil titles. Resident Evil 9 i s set to launch on February 27, 2026, but a demo will be playable in August at Gamescom, so book your tickets for Cologne, Germany.
