My favorite Bluetooth speaker just crashed to its lowest ever price — the EarFun UBoom L is just $49 right now

When I'm using one of the best Bluetooth speakers, nothing makes me happier than feeling the bass in my jaw or in my temples. I want earth-shattering bass that makes me concerned for the walls in my rental. I want it to be so rich that I feel like it's calling me poor. I want it to feel deeper than the pseudo-feelings I had as a Tumblr emo girlie. My poetic musings aside... I love testing wireless speakers and putting them through their paces to determine whether they're good value for money. I have a couple speakers at home but the one I (and my partner) use the most is the EarFun UBoom L — and right now, it's down to its lowest ever price as it's discounted by 38% at Amazon U.S. and 13% at Amazon U.K. The EarFun UBoom L offers big sound on a budget. This portable speaker produces powerful bass, clear vocals and well-balanced sound across a range of genres. With a dedicated outdoor mode and an IP67 resistance rating, the speaker can soundtrack pool parties and hikes, it's got great battery life, and the customizable EQ via the user-friendly companion app works really well. Even at its retail price of $79 / £79, the UBoom L easily warrants a recommendation. It provides big sound on a budget, and it's highly portable so you can take it anywhere you like. Adding to that is the UBoom L's IP67 rating, which means it's waterproof down to 3 feet and fully dustproof. Trust me, I use this speaker in the shower nearly everyday, and I've even submerged it in a sink full of water just to show off to my friends — and it has always come out unscathed. Now, onto the sound quality... Utilizing the brand's "JumboBass technology," the UBoom L delivers powerful bass thanks to its passive bass radiators on each side working in conjunction with the 55mm drivers. When you play a bass-heavy track, you can see the side radiators vibrate and, like I mentioned up top, you can feel the bass in your soul (depending on how far you are from the speaker, of course). Residents of the rainy British isles will be pleased to hear that the EarFun UBoom L is discounted here too... although not by much. It's down to £69 from its retail price of £79 but even though you aren't saving as much as the Americans, it's still worth the investment. One thing I really like about this speaker as that basslines never feel overpowering. They have an oomph with a lovely warmth to them, so you can really appreciate each note that the bassist is plucking. Even at high volumes, music remains free of distortion, making the UBoom L the ideal speaker for soundtracking social gatherings. Vocals sound just as good, if not better, and there's plenty of detail in every track to be enjoyed and appreciate. I often hook it up to my laptop too when I'm watching a horror or thriller movie, and the speaker creates an eerie soundscape. For a small, portable speaker, I'm always taken aback by how powerful the UBoom L sounds. If you want a rugged speaker that doesn't cut any corners, I'd recommend saving $30 at Amazon U.S. or £10 at Amazon U.K. You can thank me later.

Giant pop hits with chaotic lyrics, meet this week's feature artist

Emerging from Western Sydney, 22-year-old Sri-Lankan/Australian wordsmith Ama, is the latest voice breaking through the indie pop landscape. Loading Ama's passion to create a deeply emotional, raw and powerful story via her music first bloomed in her formative high school years before Ama began performing as a cover gigs at the age of 17. Those covers gigs are still a part of her live experience with her performing most nights of the week and honing her craft with a mixture of covers and originals. Whilst she loves to perform Ed Sheeran, the true inspiration in Ama's work come from Devon Again, Gracie Abrahams and Lizie McAlpine - influences which you'll hear shining through in her breakout single 'Employee'. Loading Ama places singular emphasis on meaningful songwriting. 'My way of storytelling is always consistent, but I go the extra mile with the concept of each song.' In 2023, with only three songs released, Ama ambitiously reached out on TikTok and Instagram with a callout to open for Sam Fischer, an early success that she says was manifested through pure force of will. 'Anything can happen if you want it bad enough.' Ama credits her connection to her online community as another driving source of inspiration to continue to release music. After many shows she would head straight to socials for hours on end where she would engage with fans and continue performing online. Ama's upcoming EP Julie's House explores the complexities of an online 'situationship.' Ama wanted to dedicate an entire project to the experience and while the relationship might not have been as deep as it felt, the connection was real and impactful. 'This person really saw me for who I was and inspired me a lot.' The EP navigates the emotional whiplash of wanting to meet in real life but coming to terms with another's reluctance. It's these lived experiences that make her relationship fuelled songwriting feel so earnest and raw as those moments transcend the songs to make paradoxically unique but relatable songs. Currently Ama is focused on building their catalogue and as her audience grows, so too do her ambitions but with a voice and songs like these we're confident they'll be shortly fulfilled AMA - on your triple j and Unearthed airwaves all this week or her Unearthed page.

Never stare at ugly cords again, thanks to this clever $24 outlet cover

I'm all for new tech, but every gadget I bring home (or should I say, every gadget that gets shipped to my house) comes with a fresh tangle of cords that seems to take on a life of its own. If only there were an easy way to keep the chaos in check and class up all that cable clutter. Well, good news — there is. Check out the Sleek Socket Ultra-Thin Electrical Outlet Cover. At just $24, the price is shocking, but in the best way possible. We can't say enough good things about the Sleek Socket. It looks refined, it's easy to clean around and it gives you more space against your walls, since you'll no longer have a bunch of plugs bulging out of your outlets. Its 3-foot cable can easily be hidden away behind your electronics, clamped to your baseboard or stowed behind your workstation. The end result is a power solution that blends into the background with outlets that "look so much cleaner," as one shopper said. "Love how minimal and clean these make our home look!" It's especially ideal for tight spaces or apartment dwellers whose leases prevent them from a more invasive fix. "I needed something simple and user-friendly that could quickly be installed in my rental," shared a savvy buyer. "This was honestly such a good option and it is not super noticeable! Love it ... A great option for those who are renting." "I had no idea these existed!" raved an electrified fan. "They work great behind a shelf or dresser, they allow the shelf to be pushed flush with the wall and still have three things plugged in!" This shopper gushed, "I saw this online and thought it was a great idea to solve the issue I was having — due to the outlets situated behind the couch, plugging in anything such as lamps and chargers would cause a big space between the wall and the couch. But with this neat little solution, now everything sits flush and [there's] nothing to be seen. Works great." The Sleek Socket can even help baby-proof. "Super easy to install and [the] perfect length to keep out of our new baby's hands," raved a careful parent. "The way the room got set up, the outlets were always near the crib. This is flat enough so her little fingers couldn't get behind it, and allowed us parents to sleep with ease. Highly recommend." Of course, some buyers have suggestions for improvement. "Don't get me wrong, I love this outlet cover/extension cord," said a generally satisfied reviewer. "It hides the plug-ins for our TV wonderfully, and we have been talking about buying more for the house. The only complaint I have is that the adhesive that is used to hold the cord to the wall took the paint with it when it was moved." "I really wish they would make a TV mount option with a longer (10- to 12-foot) cord," said a buyer. "Overall the product is great, just didn't fit my specific needs." (Need something longer? See below for the 8-foot version.) Here's another way to bring a little more coherence to your cords and cables (and, yes, it's also a surge protector): And if you have Amazon Prime, you'll get free shipping, of course. Not yet a member? You can sign up for your free 30-day trial here. (And by the way, those without Prime still get free shipping on orders of $35 or more.)
