Schueller lifts Germany over Denmark, Seica hails fans after draw with Italy
Lea Schueller fired Germany to the brink of the Women's Euro 2025 quarter-finals with the decisive goal in Tuesday's 2-1 win over Denmark. Bayern Munich striker Schueller rolled home a calm finish in the 66th minute in Basel as Germany came from behind to stay top of Group D, three points ahead of Sweden who face Poland later. Germany will be guaranteed a spot in the last eight if Sweden avoid defeat in Lucerne but with six points from two matches Christian Wueck's team are through barring disaster. Sjoeke Nuesken drew Germany level from the penalty spot 10 minutes before Schueller's second goal in as many games, cancelling out Amalie Vangsgaard's rocket of an opener for the Danes. Germany could have already been in the lead at that point as Klara Buhl's fine strike was ruled out for Nuesken being offside and interfering with play. Denmark's defender #04 Emma Faerge (left) fights for the ball with Germany's midfielder #19 Klara Buehl. AFP The eight-time European champions were frustrated again in the 40th minute when after being given a spot-kick for a Frederikke Thogersen handball, VAR determined the offence occurred just outside the penalty area. However VAR was in their favour when referee Catarina Campos was summoned to the pitch-side monitor and saw that Katrine Veje clumsily brought down Linda Dallmann and gave Nuesken her chance to equalise. From there Germany were uncontainable and Schueller popped up in the right place to stroll onto Jule Brand's easy pass and maintain Germany's perfect start to the tournament. Meanwhile, Portugal centre back Ana Seica credited the support of the team's fans for inspiring them to a 1-1 draw with Italy on Monday that kept alive their hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the Women's Euros. After suffering a 5-0 loss to world champions Spain in their Group B opener in Bern on Thursday, Portugal would have been forgiven for being low on confidence heading into the clash with Italy. Not so their fans, and the drums of the Navegadoras pounded across the Stade de Geneve long before kickoff while chants and cheers urging the players to resist the Italians continued until the final whistle. 'Our fans are amazing,' Seica, who was an unused substitute, told Reuters after the game. 'Even in the warm up, they're already there. They're already making noise ... it's what keeps us going until the 90th minute.' Denmark's forward #21 Amalie Vangsgaard (second left) fights for the ball with Germany's defender #04 Rebecca Knaak (second right). AFP The Portuguese players responded to the cacophony of support with a performance of true grit as they held back wave after wave of Italian attacks. 'In this game, we came in a lot harder. We won more duels, something that we needed to improve, and it was shown on the pitch that we fought for it,' Seica said. Goalkeeper Patricia Morais roared in relief to the crowd after making a save just before halftime but she was unable to stop Cristiana Girelli's beautiful, curling finish in the 70th minute that looked to have sent Italy into the quarter-finals. Portugal and their fans had other ideas. Diana Silva's header hit the back of the net in the 80th minute only to be disallowed for offside but, with only a minute left on the clock, the Portuguese fans exploded in delight as Diana Gomes equalised. 'We kept pushing, we kept our heart. That's what we are known for ... and we got that goal,' said Seica. The drums are sure to pounding again in Sion on Friday when Portugal face an already eliminated Belgium, looking for the victory they need to have a chance of staying in the tournament. Agencies

🎥 Vangsgaard makes something from nothing as Denmark lead Germany
European powerhouse Germany are in danger of suffering a potential setback at EURO 2025 as Denmark hold a narrow 1-0 lead at halftime. Despite dominating play throughout the vast majority of the opening 45 minutes, it was De rød-hvide striker Amalie Vangsgaard who opened the scoring in the 26th minute. Advertisement The 28-year-old Juventus forward picked up a loose ball just outside the edge of the box before driving into the penalty area to smash her low effort past Gotham FC's Ann-Katrin Berger, on what was the first shot of the match for Andrée Jeglertz's outfit. It was Denmark's first goal of the tournament in the wake of their opening loss against rivals Sweden, with the Danes needing a result here to remain in with a chance of reaching the knockout stage. 📸 SEBASTIEN BOZON - AFP or licensors

Bianconere claim first leg lead over Fiorentina
Juventus Women First Team leave Viola Park as victors after winning the first leg of the Women's Coppa Italia semi-final against Fiorentina. Goals from Mathilde Harviken, Barbara Bonansea and Amalie Vangsgaard saw Massimiliano Canzi's side run out as 3-2 winners in the first of a two-legged tie from which the winner will progress to the Coppa Italia final. Juve started brightly in Florence with the Bianconere taking the lead after just five minutes courtesy of a combination between two of the latest additions to the squad: a corner kick taken by Abi Brighton was met by a header from Harviken to open the scoring in first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final. A few seconds later Cristiana Girelli almost doubled Juve's advantage but was unable to get on the end of Sofia Cantore's cross into the penalty area. In the tenth minute the hosts equalised through Agnese Bonfantini and three minutes later they went 2-1 up thanks to a long-range strike from Emma Faerge. The Bianconere's response was driven by Hanna Bennison, whose shot, having taken a deflection, flashed just wide. Juve again claim close midway through the first half when the ball fell to Cantore in the area, but the striker was unable to get a clean shot on goal. Canzi's team had the biggest chances of the first half and in the 36th minute they drew level with Fiorentina, again taking advantage of a corner: this time the cross by Lisa Boattin was flicked on by Cantore before being turned home by Bonansea to make it 2-2. The last chance of an action packed opening 45 minutes fell to Girelli who directed Boattin's cross goalwards, before seeing her effort strike the crossbar. The second half was played at a lower tempo than the hectic first period, but there was no shortage of goal-scoring opportunities for the two teams. The first chance of the second half came through Bonansea with a left-footed shot that was saved by the Viola goalkeeper. A few seconds later at the other end, Pauline Peyraud-Magnin was not to be outdone and did well to turn Bonafintini's threatening effort from the edge of the area behind for a corner. On the hour mark it was Paulina Krumbiegel's turn to try and find Juve's third goal of the afternoon with a snapshot that tested Francesca Durante, the Fiorentina keeper was then called into action by Brighton's right-footed effort with a quarter of an hour left on the clock. On the 76th minute Juventus Women took advantage of a mistake by the Fiorentina goalkeeper to go ahead: Amalie Vangsgaard pressed Durante, whose clearance was charged down by the Bianconere forward and the ball deflected into the back of the net to make it 3-2 to Juve. In the 80th minute, Peyraud-Magnin made a magnificent save to tip Kaja Erzen's shot from distance over the crossbar to maintain Juve's lead and thus secure Juventus Women's away win in the first leg of the Women's Coppa Italia semi-finals.
