Why the Kardashians and Trumps love Amangiri: stunning nature and total exclusivity take centre stage at this luxury desert resort in Utah surrounded by billion-year-old rock formations
Located miles away from civilisation, deep in Utah's remote canyon land, luxury hotel Amangiri has achieved an almost mythical status since it first opened in 2009. Considered by many to be the crown jewel in Aman Resorts' ultra-luxurious portfolio, it consistently ranks among the brand's top three properties, and is a magnet for the rich and famous, including Ivanka Trump, the Kardashians and the Biebers Amangiri's exclusivity is such that nabbing a reservation is almost as difficult as buying a Birkin . And even if you get one, getting to the resort is no easy feat. While many arrive via private plane or helicopter, I choose the more scenic route, which involves a four-hour drive from Las Vegas. Advertisement Amangiri is nestled within Utah's undulating desert landscapes. Photo: Handout The drive becomes a different journey altogether thanks to my driver, who is a member of the Navajo Nation, an indigenous tribe that lives on a reservation bordering Amangiri. He gives me an eye-opening lesson about their culture, history and deep-rooted connection to the land. By the time we reach the resort, I feel as though I'm entering a sacred place (Amangiri also means 'peaceful mountain' in Sanskrit). The resort is set on 900 acres of privately owned land, but the main hotel covers only a fraction of this. It blends effortlessly into the stark, otherworldly landscape, dotted with towering sandstone mesas that change colour like chameleons. A temple of pared-back minimalism, its weathered concrete and natural stone walls come alive against the vibrant blue sky. There are 34 suites in the main building, and the higher categories include private plunge pools and sky decks. Located just a five-minute drive away is a newer property, Camp Sarika, which takes glamping to a whole new level with 10 tented pavilions boasting private plunge pools, multiple bedrooms, and living and dining spaces. The private terrace and pool at one of the suites at Amangiri. Photo: Handout I stay in a Desert Suite, which is minimalist in design but comfortable and expansive, and with its own private courtyard entrance, outdoor terrace, firepit and bi-fold glass doors for a luxe take on indoor-outdoor living. What really takes my breath away, though, are the jaw-dropping views. The vistas are Amangiri's unique selling point and as such, take pride of place everywhere you go, from the main lobby and dining area to the suites. Every corner is Instagrammable, from the hallways to the water pavilion in the spa. My personal favourite is the dreamy central pool which snakes around a billion-year-old rock formation – the starting point and inspiration for the hotel's design.

Aman Spa at the Amangiri
Welcome to the second iteration of Vogue's global spa guide, an index of the 100 best spas in the world, built from the expertise of our global editors and trusted contributors. There is a lot to choose from in the world of wellness, and no matter how far you're planning to travel—from a subway ride to a trans-Atlantic flight—we want to make sure it's worth the journey. Whatever your path, let us be your guide. Why go here? The Amangiri is one of—if not, arguably, the—best hotels in the United States. (It's been awarded three Michelin keys.) The minimalist architecture, the otherworldly desert landscape, the luxurious amenities and service…. It all adds up to a once-in-a-lifetime stay. There's a reason that Hailey and Justin Bieber, the Kardashians, as well as Beyoncé and Jay-Z have all been guests of the Amangiri: It's spectacular. So yes, go for the spa. But also just go for the experience. What's the vibe? Hidden in the remote south Utah desert, the Aman Spa at the Amangiri, a 25,000-square-foot wellness center, looks out onto a sprawling, Mars-like expanse of sand and red rocks. And the architecture is almost as impressive as the landscape: Housed in a series of concrete structures, it looks less like a spa and more like the futuristic secret lair of a James Bond villain. Photo: Robert Rieger / Courtesy of Aman The history? Aman spas are the signature wellness facility of the Aman hotels, the ultra-luxury hospitality brand known for its minimalist design style, over-the-top service, and extremely high rates. (So dedicated is its clientele that they call themselves 'Aman Junkies.') While there's a number of Amans throughout the world—including in Thailand, Japan, Greece, and New York—the Amangiri is one of their most famous, due to its distinctive Brutalist architecture and barren yet beautiful landscape that stretches over 900 acres of southern Utah's Colorado Plateau. Photo: Robert Rieger / Courtesy of Aman What should you try? The most notable Aman Spa offerings are inspired by the high desert they reside in. The Utah Salt and Clay Treatment, for example, embraces exactly that—locally harvested sea salt and bentonite desert clay, as well as either turquoise sage mountain arnica or prickly pear pomegranate lotions. Although there's plenty that also embrace cutting-edge wellness technology (some massages embrace cyrotherapy rollers) as well as globally influenced techniques—like the Shirodhara treatment, an ancient Ayurvedic treatment where warm oil is poured onto one's forehead and then massaged into their scalp. That's just if you want to stay within the concrete walls. The best wellness experiences involve the great outdoors. Like their tower Butte Yoga, where a helicopter will fly you to a canyon plateau for a private yoga session 1,000 feet above the cerulean waters of Lake Powell. (When I visited, choppers could often be heard overhead.) Meanwhile, on-staff wellness gurus will lead you through 'journeys,' such as their Wild Wellness program, where you'll do a personal training session in the middle of the desert followed by a rhythmic massage. You can also choose your own adventure—literally. The Amangiri has over 12 miles of hiking trails, and you will be given a trail map upon check-in. I took myself on a self-guided hike through the desert and looming rock formations until I reached a slot canyon that was like something from a sci-fi film. My hike was followed by a massage and then a visit to the Water Pavilion, which features a cold plunge pool, sauna, and steam room for my own thermal therapy circuit. Photo: Robert Rieger / Courtesy of Aman What else do we need to know? The Aman has their own skin-care line, Aman Essentials, that they use during many of their treatments. Although ingredients can vary, the formulas include amethyst, jade, frankincense, and palo santo, as well as alkalizing, oxygen-rich spring water, wild-harvested Amazon butters, and rainforest muds. If you want to take the Aman lifestyle even further, Aman Cabana—the brand's retail concept—offers a range of clothes, luggage, and even board games. It's all a long way from the traditional terry cloth robes of yesteryear. Photo: Robert Rieger / Courtesy of Aman Who can go? The Aman Spa is only open to guests of the Amangiri. Amangiri Utah: A Sanctuary of Serenity and Adventure
This story will appear in the March ETA print magazine, publishing March 16. You've seen the towering mesas, red rock canyons and endless vistas of the American Southwest your entire life - in movies, television, perhaps even in dreams. But even if you've seen the actual landscape with your own eyes, have you really been there? It can be hard for the average traveler to really immerse themselves in the region - in many cases, it's simply too vast to explore thoroughly without an arduous backpacking trek. There is, however, another way to truly have a brand-new experience, creating a new and fascinating familiarity within the unfamiliar. Tucked within these dramatic canyons and mesas in Southern Utah, Amangiri - part boutique hotel/part immersive experience and entry into the thoughtful and high-end Aman Hotel Group - stands as a harmonious commingling of luxury and nature. A marvel of architecture seamlessly blending into the raw beauty of its surroundings, guests at Amangiri receive an unparalleled escape in a way that only Aman hotels can provide. Comfort Meets EleganceAman's ethos redefines luxury, focusing on experiences that soothe the soul and invigorate the senses. A 5-star hotel experience paired with a modernist retreat, each property in the company's collection is curated with the region in mind, from cityscape to natural wonder. Amangiri, for example, reflects the surrounding landscape, with materials and earthy tones elevating its sense of tranquility. The 34 available suites are serene havens, boasting private terraces with breathtaking views, inviting plunge pools and modernist interior appointments exuding understated elegance and a connection to what is viewed out of the panorama windows. Every detail has been thoughtfully considered to ensure the utmost in comfort and privacy - after all, what is a true escape without the actual escape? The resort features luxe appointments throughout the property. Aman Spa is a sanctuary within a sanctuary. Using locally sourced ingredients to achieve time-honored techniques, the spa's skilled therapists guide guests on a journey of rejuvenation and self-discovery. Savoring the Flavors of the SouthwestAmangiri's culinary offerings are a celebration of the region's bounty, showcasing fresh and local ingredients paired with innovative preparation techniques. The resort's chefs draw inspiration from the region, creating dishes with a visual flair matching the surrounding environment within the beautiful dining space. While menus are often updated, the late winter/ early spring offerings include the Three Sisters Curry, with Sonoran desert grains and heirloom veggies, or a masala lamb featuring Utah-raised livestock. To sample it all, the restaurant offers the 'Spirit of the Journey' tasting menu that features a course-based wine pairing. Each dish is made with both nutrition and savoriness in mind, fuel for your escape, regardless of what form it takes. A Tapestry of Colors and ExperiencesSpring breathes new life into the desert landscape, painting it with vibrant hues as wildflower patches form, so it creates a beautiful and meaningful time to visit. As the days grow longer and warmer, the resort can serve as the jumping-off point for seasonal adventure. Amangiri guided hikes give guests the opportunity to find their zen as they wander through hidden canyons and along scenic trails. For adventuresome sorts, canyoneering and rock climbing awaits among the massive, weather-and water-carved boulders and cliffsides. For a more top-down perspective, famed desert hot air balloon rides allow guests to soar above the majestic landscape and witness its grandeur from the unique bird's-eye view. To connect to the trail (and the countryside), visitors can take to horseback, exploring the region in an intimate and timeless way before returning to their desert sanctuary. No matter how you choose to utilize Amangiri, the one-of-a-kind version of a Southwestern oasis is something you simply must experience to believe. -Alan LaGuardia
