‘Purest of batters, purest of bowlers': Amanjot shines in 2nd T20I win
Chandigarh: Ahead of the England tour, the Indian women's team had primarily looked at Amanjot Kaur in a bowling role in white-ball cricket. But on Tuesday night, in the second T20I against England at Bristol, she proved her coach Nagesh Gupta's assessment of her as a two-dimensional cricketer. India's Amanjot Kaur in action. (Reuters) The 24-year-old hit an impressive unbeaten 40-ball 63 batting at No.5, the joint top score. And coming on to bowl, Amanjot first grabbed the all-important wicket of the in-form England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt. However, it was with the bat that she truly instilled a level of confidence that was long missing in the Indian team. A seam-bowling all-rounder is a luxury for any team and with India preparing for the upcoming Women's ODI World Cup and the T20 World Cup next year, India would love to add that kind of luxury to the talent they can call upon. Amanjot made sure that she stuck to her job and partnered with joint top-scorer Jemimah Rodrigues, raising 93 runs for the fourth wicket. She then stitched together an unbeaten 57 with Richa Ghosh (32*) as India recorded 181/4 – the second-highest women's T20I total at Bristol. She completed her maiden T20I half-century off 35 balls. During the rebuilding job, Amanjot also showed that she can accelerate the innings with clean stroke play in the death overs as well. India scored 117 runs in the last 10 overs after the early jolts when they lost Shafali Verma (3), Smriti Mandhana (13) and Harmanpreet Kaur (1), reducing India to 31/3 within the Powerplay phase. Jemimah underlined her experience, smashing a 41-ball 63 to revive the Indian innings. She went after Linsey Smith (0/37) and Em Arlott (1/43) to inflict further damage. 'Credit goes to Jemi for pacing her innings so well. She told me to stay at the wicket for a longer time and then we wanted to take it deep. Afterwards, Richa finished the innings well,' Amanjot said after the game. India beat England by 24 runs to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20I series. Harleen Deol, who scored 43 off 23 balls in the first match, was left out with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur returning after sitting out the Trent Bridge game. Amanjot is enjoying her comeback into the Indian team. She had suffered a hand and back injury in 2024, forcing her to miss the T20 World Cup as well as the domestic season. But she made use of the Women's Premier League stint with Mumbai Indians to earn her India call-up. Speaking on her maiden T20 half-century and the all-rounder tag, Amanjot said, 'It is the first of many. I am now being called an all-rounder, but I would like to believe that I am the purest of the bowlers and the purest of the batters. I want to do it more for India.' Her innings included nine fours, the same number hit by Jemimah. Richa Ghosh remained unbeaten on 32. England once again failed to mount a serious chase as they were restricted to 157/7. Tammy Beaumont top-scored with 54 and Amy Jones (32) Sophie Ecclestone (35) contributing, but it could not prevent a 24-run defeat.

Having lost three quick wickets, including that of the previous match centurion Smriti Mandhana, the visitors came back in the match courtesy of half-centuries by Jemimah Rodrigues and Player of the Match Amanjot Kaur. Speaking after hitting her first-ever T20I fifty, Amanjot credited Rodrigues for giving her crucial advice during their 93-run partnership that helped India finish their first innings on 181/4. 'The credit goes to Jemi (Rodrigues), the way she paced her innings. She told me to stay on the wicket. The wicket was quite damp and slow, compared to the one in Nottingham, and we planned to take it deep. We wanted to get going in the 16-18th overs and Richa (Ghosh) finished well too,' Amanjot Kaur said as quoted from ICC. Amanjot also picked the crucial wicket of the England skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt, which helped stifle the hosts' chase. The all-rounder added that she wants to contribute more to the country. 'It is the first of many (50s). I am being called an all-rounder. But I'd still say that I am the purest of the batters and purest of bowlers. My plan (against Brunt) was very simple. I wanted to keep it on the stump and bowl. We knew 170 was a par total on this wicket,' She added. Amanjot added that the new-look Indian team had come well-prepared for the T20I series. 'This is a new Indian team, wherever we go, home or away, we are ready to dominate. As games go deep, we need to plan where to hit every bowler while batting. They had specific plans for every batter. T20I is very fast-paced, and we don't get time to plan on the ground while the match is on. We are aware of that and we came well prepared,' She added. Amanjot, Rodrigues power India to 24-run win over England in 2nd T20I
Indian juggernaut in the white-ball tour continued as Amanjot Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues hit radiant fifties to propel the visitors to a commanding 24-run win over England in the second T20 International here. Tuesday night's win handed Harmanpreet Kaur's side a 2-0 lead in the five-match series, having won the opener by a record-shattering 97-run margin last week. Amanjot (63 not out off 40 balls), who scored her maiden T20I fifty, and Rodrigues (63 off 41 deliveries) posted a formidable 181 for 4 after being asked to bat. The Indian bowlers, led by spinners, then did their bit to restrict the home side to 157 for 7 in 20 overs despite Tammy Beaumont's 35-ball 54, marking the first time any team has been able to beat England in a women's T20I in Bristol. "Good win for us, the way the entire team performed today was special to see. The way Jemimah and Amanjot played gave us a platform. When boundaries were not coming they were looking for twos. Still it's a long time to see how it'll be in the World Cup. Just focus on this series. Spin is our strength and I want to back that," Harmanpreet said after the win. India's innings began in disarray with opener Shafali Verma (3), last game's centurian Smriti Mandhana (13) and skipper Harmanpreet (1), who returned after missing the first match, all back in the dug-out inside the powerplay. After a shaky start, the elegant Rodrigues, who scored nine boundaries and a six, and spirited Amanjot not only resurrected India from 31 for 3 with 93-run stand for the fourth wicket but also laid the foundation for a towering 181 for 4, hitting a flurry of boundaries. Rodrigues eventually perished in the 15th over, caught by Sophia Dunkley off Lauren Bell, but Amanjot marched on. Amanjot, whose innings was laced with nine boundaries, then stitched a 57-run stand with the big-hitting Richa Ghosh (32 not out off 22 balls), who provided the final flourish as India recorded the second-highest total in WT20Is here. The tourists picked up 117 runs in the last 10 overs. India were sharp in the field as they effected as many as three run outs including that of Sophia Dunkley (1) in the first over. Seasoned spinner Deepti Sharma struck of the very next ball to dismiss Danni Wyatt-Hodge (1) as both England openers' stay was short lived. Amanjot returned to the spotlight, dismissing the ever-dangerous Nat Sciver-Brunt, as England, like India, too suffered a batting collapse to slump to 17 for 3 by the fourth over. Beaumont and keeper-batter Amy Jones (32) kept England afloat with a 70-run stand. But, left arm-spinner Shree Charani (2/28) caught Jones off her own bowling in the 15th over to thwart all hopes for an England win. Sophie Ecclestone (35) hit some boundaries but it was not enough. "It's new Indian team. Wherever we play, home or away, we are ready to dominate. That was our plan and we did that today," said Amanjot who was adjudged player of match for his 63 with the bat and one wicket with the ball.
