Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu vows to complete Amaravati capital construction in three years

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Friday declared that the construction of Amaravati capital city would be completed in three years, and it would be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Addressing a huge public meeting on the occasion of the relaunch of the Amaravati construction works here, Mr. Naidu called it 'a landmark in Andhra Pradesh's history.' 'Amaravati, which has been in a state of limbo for five years, is being revived under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. This is not just a restart of construction, it is revival of the hopes and dreams of five crore people of the State,' Mr. Naidu observed. Fight against terror The Chief Minister extended a warm welcome to the Prime Minister on behalf of the people of Andhra Pradesh, and recalled the recent solemn meeting with him in Delhi. 'He was deeply anguished by the Pahalgam terror attack that had claimed innocent Indian lives. Today, Andhra Pradesh stands firmly with the Prime Minister and his fight against terrorism,' Mr. Naidu asserted, amidst chants of 'Vande Mataram' and 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai'. 'Amaravati will be a smart, eco-friendly city with global institutions, green infrastructure, inland waterways, cycling tracks, and a greenfield airport. It will be a capital every citizen will be proud of'N. Chandrababu NaiduAndhra Pradesh Chief Minister Reaffirming the NDA government's commitment to balance development and welfare, Mr. Naidu outlined his vision of building Amaravati as a world-class, blue-green capital city. 'We will make Amaravati a smart, eco-friendly city with global institutions, green infrastructure, inland waterways, cycling tracks, and a greenfield airport. It will be a capital every citizen will be proud of,' he said. Quantum Valley Speaking about innovation and future technology, the Chief Minister sought the Centre's support in establishing a Quantum Valley in Amaravati — a national hub for quantum technology, drawing parallels with Silicon Valley in the U.S. The proposed project, he said, 'is already receiving interest from TCS, IBM, and L&T, and there us an MoU signed today.' Mr. Naidu said, 'Amaravati will be developed as an educational hub, which will provide education to more than five lakh students. BITS-Pilani, Global Leadership Centre, and Ratan Tata Innovative Hub would come up in Amaravati.' The day also saw the launch of 94 projects worth ₹57,962 crore. They included the laying of stone for 74 Amaravati-related projects worth ₹49,000 crore, nine Central government projects worth ₹5,028 crore, eight National Highway projects worth ₹3,680 crore, and three railway projects worth ₹254 crore. Recalling that Mr. Modi had laid the stone for Amaravati in 2015, the Chief Minister expressed the hope that he would return to inaugurate the completed capital in 2027. 'Today, the capital city lives again, because the people gave us a clear mandate,' Mr. Naidu said, crediting farmers, women, and legal institutions for keeping the Amaravati dream alive during the years of political uncertainty. While reiterating Amaravati's centrality to Andhra Pradesh's aspirations, Mr. Naidu emphasised equitable development across all the regions. He said, 'Polavaram project will be completed by 2027 and Bhogapuram airport in one year. The Central government has revived the Vizag steel plant by providing an aid of ₹11,440 crore. A ₹1.43 lakh crore ArcelorMittal steel plant will come up in Anakapalli. Visakhapatnam is being promoted as a knowledge and financial capital. A High Court bench will be established in Rayalaseema,' 'Under Mr. Modi's leadership, India has risen to become the 5th largest economy from 10th earlier, and will soon become the third largest. We are witnessing a strong India under a strong leader,' Mr. Naidu said, showering praise on the Prime Minister's development and welfare model. The Chief Minister announced that the Prime Minister would visit the State on June 21 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Yoga Day in Visakhaptnam.

Traffic congestion worsens in Vijayawada despite ongoing measures

Vijayawada: Traffic congestion in Vijayawada city continues to cause severe inconvenience for residents and commuters, despite several measures initiated by the police administration to tackle the situation. With the renewed momentum of Amaravati capital works , traffic jams have worsened across the city, highlighting the urgent need for a more comprehensive traffic management strategy . Vijayawada, the second-largest city in Andhra Pradesh after Visakhapatnam, witnessed a steady rise in population and vehicular traffic since Amaravati was announced as the state capital in 2015. The situation is particularly challenging along national highway-16 (NH-16), which runs through the city, creating bottlenecks at major intersections such as Screw Bridge, Benz Circle, Mahanadu Junction, Ramavarappadu, and Enikepadu, especially during peak hours. To tackle the growing congestion, two flyovers were constructed at Benz Circle. However, they failed to offer a permanent solution. Currently, efforts are underway to build a five-kilometre flyover from Mahanadu Junction to Nidamanuru, alongside the development of four alternate routes towards Eluru Road to ease traffic flow during construction. Nevertheless, the return of NDA govt and the acceleration of Amaravati-related activities further strained the city's traffic, with even minor intersections in areas like AS Rama Rao Road, Mugalrajapuram, Patamata, and Bhavanipuram facing frequent jams. Faulty traffic signals and manual regulation using microphones by police personnel are compounding the problem. According to studies by the School of Planning and Architecture and Siddhartha Engineering College, the opening of the Vijayawada West Bypass Road could significantly reduce heavy vehicle movement into the city, thereby alleviating congestion. The town planning department of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has also emphasised the need for better traffic junction development, noting that mere road widening has not been sufficient. City officials have announced plans to restore malfunctioning traffic signals, deploy drone-based traffic surveys, and construct railway overbridges at critical points where level crossings frequently cause delays. The Vijayawada city traffic police department is also preparing to enforce stricter measures to ensure smoother traffic flow and prevent road accidents.
