Red Deer anticipates tourism boost after The Amazing Race Canada debut

The Canyon Coaster at the Canyon Ski Resort was one of the challenges on Season 11 of The Amazing Race Canada. (Supplied) Red Deer is hoping to see a tourism boost following the Season 11 premiere of The Amazing Race Canada, which featured the central Alberta city for the first time. Racers in the travel competition show started at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium before the first clue led them south to Red Deer. Teams had to guess the seconds it took to race down the Canyon Coaster at the Canyon Ski Resort and successfully complete a line dance at The Silver Buckle country bar. 'We're pretty new in the industry, so it was a good way for us to get our name out,' The Silver Buckle owner Mark Linton told CTV News Edmonton last week. 'I'm certainly hoping it's going to pick things up for us and bring even more of the community out because we try to do our best to do things for the community around here.' 'It was pretty surreal watching the episode live on CTV, knowing that we were part of that and part of those conversations, and that we got to showcase our community,' Jesse Smith with Tourism Red Deer said on Monday. Smith added there was a good turnout for the viewing party in Red Deer for the first episode, with a lot of Tourism Red Deer feeling proud of the work that they put into promoting the third largest city in the province. 'Proud to be from Red Deer and (the) region, and really excited about .. being put on the map in the Canadian context, which is what we're trying to do,' he added. 'This is kind of like a feather in the cap that says we're definitely on the right track.' Smith said about 16-million people drive past Red Deer each year on Highway 2. They're hoping to capitalize on that traffic after being featured on the show. 'Instead of people taking a quick drive from Edmonton to Calgary, we want them to book a weekend and come and check all the different things that exist in Red Deer.' 'For Red Deer to become part of that first episode, (it was a) tremendous sense of excitement (and) a lot of pride … that we could be on the big screen on such a great show,' Johnston said in an interview on Wednesday. He added that patriotism is at an 'all-time high' and hopes there will be a 'wave effect' in added tourism following the airing of The Amazing Race Canada. 'Canadians have decided that you don't need to go across the border to discover something new, unique, (and) historic,' Johnston said. 'All those things in our country … will see an uptick in tourism and that will certainly apply to Alberta and … Red Deer.' I had to bust out the next hat,' Peter told CTV News Edmonton after last week's episode aired, mentioning the difficulty of the line dancing challenge in Red Deer. 'Alberta was such a beautiful province and just driving around from hour to hour, from challenge to challenge, from Calgary and Edmonton and Red Deer, it was really serene and peaceful,' Deonarine added. 'It was really a wonderful experience for us. Definitely going to go back again and again.' Three teams with ties to Alberta are racing this season, including Blair Gladue – better known as Superfan Magoo to local Oilers fans – and his wife Skylene. ‘Amazing Race Canada' visits Lake Louise, Calgary brothers channel their inner cowboys

Esosa and Osas Igbinosun are brothers from Calgary competing in season 11 of Amazing Race Canada. A pair of Calgary brothers worked overtime to get in touch with their inner cowboys as Amazing Race Canada travelled to Lake Louise on Tuesday night. The popular CTV reality program launched its 11th season last Tuesday night in Red Deer, then this week, contestants boarded two buses that took them to Lake Louise in Banff National Park. Among season 11's contestants are Calgary residents Esosa and Osas Igbinosun, who spoke to CTV Morning Live earlier this week about participating in the adventure that is Amazing Race Canada. It turned out that Osas was actually the second choice of his big brother Esosa to participate in the show with. 'This guy actually never really wanted to bring me on the race,' he told Morning Live's Jodi Hughes. 'He asked his twin brother first,' he added, 'and his twin brother said 'no', and then he brought me in!' Both brothers are funny and playful but said it took a minute to get used to being on camera while they chased victory. 'Initially it felt strange,' Esosa said, 'but after a while, you forget cameras are on and your natural behaviour just comes out -- and it was just the best experience. 'At some point, it doesn't even feel as if there are cameras,' Osas added, 'because your mind is just so focused on racing and you're aware of where everyone (else) is in the race -- so you're just trying to make sure you're on it!' On Tuesday's episode in Lake Louise, the brothers had to chop through huge blocks of ice to chase an 'express' pass, then locate their inner cowboys, which mainly involved testing their roping skills. (CTV) Osas who works as an arborist, said he uses ropes to help climb trees at work -- but translating those roping skills in the snow and ice of Lake Louise proved challenging. Following the Lake Louise portion of the episode, the contestants all travelled to Golden, B.C., which is surrounded by six national parks, for the next stage of Amazing Race Canada. Amazing Race Canada airs Tuesday nights on CTV.

'Amazing Race Canada' Season 11: Eliminated cousins held up by navigation challenges in Alberta

We're only on the first episode of The Amazing Race Canada Season 11 (Tuesdays at 9:00 p.m. ET on CTV, and the CTV app), but there have already been plenty of thrills. As Jon Montgomery greeted the 11 competing teams for the first time, beginning the race in Alberta, one team fell too far behind to stick around. The challenges in the first episode included rappelling over the side of the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. Then the racers had to choose a Detour, either blindfolded pottery or fencing. That was followed by the teams going to the Canyon Ski Resort in Red Deer to ride the Canyon Coaster, tasked with having to guess the time it took to run the track. And finally, learn a line dance routine with members of the Country Pride Dance Group. Unfortunately, cousins Michele Peter and Aditi Deonarine faced navigation difficulties between each of the challenges, and had to leave the race. "I think the most difficult part of the race is not necessarily the challenge, but it was the navigation and the driving," Aditi told Yahoo Canada. "For the both of us, I know that's not the biggest strength of ours, even though we prepped as much as we could." "We had a map, we were trying to study beforehand, we had no access to GPS, any kind of electronics. We stopped and asked for help along the way, we were given incorrect directions." "We had a dad and a child, the first person who we asked, and the child was just restless and was like, 'Dad, let's keep going.' And we're just like, 'No, we've got to keep going before you go, ... so please give us the proper directions," Michele added. "And then I think at one point, at the final stretch of the leg, after the line dancing, I don't think some people were even sober. ... These are not reliable sources of information." This isn't the first time the cousins have competed on TV, after previously participating in Family Feud Canada, but they have a close connection to Amazing Race. "My dad, who sadly is no longer with us, he was like Amazing Race Canada's biggest fan," Michele shared. "And both our families love the show." "We've had such hectic lives and such personal tragedies that we didn't have time, but finally we were able to come together united." While they weren't on the show for a long time, they could still tell that best friends Jesse Harink and Jonathon Braun are a strong team. "They seemed [to be] not just hilarious characters, which we enjoy, because Michele and I are always cracking jokes and we don't take ourselves too seriously, but they seemed to be extremely intelligent, extremely athletic and fit, very competent racers," Aditi said. "So I think Michele and I gravitated towards Jonathon and Jesse just because they were just full of so many strengths and skills." Getting the opportunity now to share their Amazing Race Canada journey with friends and family, the cousins see it as an "unforgettable experience." "From the feedback and the comments that we're getting, it's great to inspire young women as well and diverse groups, and it's great to be ambassadors and an [allies] for those who need it," Michele said. "It's just really good to inspire others, the next generation, all my nieces and nephews and little cousins, and show that there can be representation in the media with South Asian women from all different populations," Aditi added. "Amazing Race Canada does such a good job of being very equitable and inclusive, ... so we were just so excited to be part of the franchise."
