Ameren proposes 800MW natural gas energy centre in Missouri
Ameren Missouri has submitted a proposal to the Missouri Public Service Commission to build an 800MW simple-cycle natural gas energy centre alongside its inaugural large-scale battery storage system (BESS). The project, called the Big Hollow Energy Center, will be built in Jefferson County. It is designed to boost energy supply and ensure grid resilience. Subject to regulatory consent, the facility aims to be operational by 2028, offering dependable backup power during extreme weather conditions or when renewable sources are insufficient. Ameren Missouri chairman and president Mark Birk stated: "This is the next step to deliver on our strategy to invest in energy infrastructure for our customers' benefit and provide a balanced generation portfolio. "As we transition our generation for the future, we'll continue to serve our customers with the reliable energy they expect while also preparing for anticipated increases in demand." Modelled after the Castle Bluff Energy Center, the Big Hollow project will cater to peak demand periods with its natural gas capabilities. The 400MW battery installation can swiftly respond to fluctuating energy requirements while enhancing overall network stability. Ameren Missouri recently accelerated its battery storage expansion strategy. By 2030, the company anticipates reaching a milestone of 1GW capacity and extending this to 1.8GW by 2042. The selected location benefits from pre-existing infrastructure and transmission lines, streamlining the development process for these facilities that will operate independently yet synergistically within the current framework. Ameren Missouri senior vice-president and chief development officer Ajay Arora stated: "It is crucial to have a balanced mix of generation technologies and equally important to strategically locate them across the region. This approach maximises the energy output from these resources." Ameren Missouri's service area covers 60 counties and 500 communities, including the greater St Louis area. Is Ameren Stock Outperforming the S&P 500?
Saint Louis, Missouri-based Ameren Corporation (AEE) generates and distributes electricity and natural gas to residential, commercial, industrial, and wholesale end markets in Missouri and Illinois. With a market cap of $25.5 billion, Ameren operates through Ameren Missouri, Ameren Illinois Electric Distribution, Ameren Illinois Natural Gas, and Ameren Transmission segments. Companies with a market cap of $10 billion or more are categorized as "large-cap stocks." Ameren fits this description perfectly, with its market cap exceeding this threshold, reflecting its substantial size and influence in the utility sector. Ameren touched its all-time high of $104.10 on Mar. 4 and is currently trading 9.3% below that peak. AEE stock has dropped 5.4% over the past three months, notably lagging behind the S&P 500 Index's ($SPX) 6.5% gains during the same time frame. Nevertheless, Ameren has significantly outperformed the broader market over the longer term. AEE stock has gained 5.9% on a YTD basis and 34.5% over the past 52 weeks, compared to SPX's 1.7% uptick in 2025 and 9% returns over the past 52 weeks. To confirm its overall bullish trend and recent downturn, AEE stock has traded consistently above its 200-day moving average since mid-July last year, but dropped below its 50-day moving average in early April. Ameren's stock prices gained 1.4% in the trading session after the release of its mixed Q1 results on May 1. The company's operating revenues from electric sales soared 18.9% year-over-year to $1.6 billion, along with a notable uptick in natural gas sales to $475 million. This led to its overall revenues growing 15.5% year-over-year to $2.1 billion, surpassing the consensus estimates by 5.7%. However, Ameren's profitability didn't flare as expected, due to an increase in operating and interest expenses. Its non-GAAP EPS grew by a modest 4.9% compared to the year-ago quarter to $1.07, and missed the Street's expectations by 93 bps. While the stock has lagged behind its peer Consolidated Edison, Inc.'s (ED) 12.9% gains in 2025, Ameren has significantly outperformed ED's 11.4% returns over the past 52 weeks. Among the 16 analysts covering the AEE stock, the consensus rating is a 'Moderate Buy.' Its mean price target of $104.07 suggests a 10.2% upside potential from current price levels. CUB asks Ameren to work with customers this summer amid utility price hike
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — The Citizens Utility Board is asking Ameren Illinois to work with customers amid utility increases. Ameren Illinois customers will be facing a 50% power increase, prompting the group to request that the utility work with those who may struggle to pay the increased bill, according to Jim Chilsen, a CUB spokesman. 'This will be a difficult summer for far too many customers,' said CUB Executive Director Sarah Moskowitz. 'In this expensive summer, we urge Ameren to do everything possible to work with customers so they can stay connected and keep their homes safe and cool.' She has requested from Ameren that they offer 'customer-friendly payment plans' which allow customers longer periods to pay off their debt, Chilsen said. The increase is estimated to raise customers' bills by about $38 to $46 each month. This summer, the increase is credited to the rise in cost for reserve power, Chilsen said. According to CUB's website, reserve power, also called 'capacity,' prices have risen because of 'poor policies' from regional power grid operators such as PJM Interconnection in ComEd territory and MISO in Ameren territory. CUB has released the following tips to help customers 'get through expensive utilities' this summer: Use energy efficiency to soften the blow of the price spike. Simple actions can help, such as weatherizing windows and doors and turning off unnecessary lights. Don't take risks that keep your home too hot. Efficiency is about eliminating waste but staying safe and cool this summer. Stay in contact with your utility. Consumers who are struggling should contact Ameren to inquire about payment plans and learn about energy efficiency programs. Consider programs to help ease costs. Ameren's Peak Time Rewards program gives customers the opportunity to earn bill credits by reducing electricity usage during high-demand periods, typically summer afternoons. Also, Illinois' community solar program offers customers the benefits of solar power without having to install panels on their homes. All offers currently guarantee savings compared to Ameren's supply price. CUB's resource, can help you carefully shop for offers. Beware of rip-offs. Since 2015, Illinois consumers have lost about $1.8 billion to alternative electricity suppliers. These suppliers are impacted by the same market conditions that are causing utility prices to increase, so it's likely, even in this expensive market, that Ameren is your best bet. One exception: If your community has negotiated a power deal with a supplier, it's possible the price is lower than Ameren's supply rate. Confirm the price and find out when the offer expires. Police in metro-east looking for alleged thieves posing as Ameren employees
Law enforcement authorities in Madison County are warning residents to stay alert for a pair of alleged thieves disguising themselves as Ameren employees. According to a release from the sheriff's department, there have been a string of robberies involving their scheme. 'A female suspect makes contact with the victim and identifies herself as an Ameren employee needing to survey the backyard for limbs in need of trimming,' stated a release posted on social media. 'While the victim is distracted, a male suspect enters the home and steals valuables.' A separate release from the Madison County Sheriff's Department said both the suspects are white and that the female suspect speaks with a foreign accent while the male suspect is tall, thin, and has dark hair. They are driving either a gray, late model Jeep Compass or a white pickup truck with ladders and storage containers, the department said. Actual Ameren employees will be in uniform, have appropriate credentials, and will be driving a clearly identifiable utility vehicle, the release stated. They also won't be aggressive or impatient with customers. If there are doubts, Ameren can be reached by calling (800) 755-5000 to double check that Ameren employees are supposed to be working in the area. A spokesperson for Ameren was not immediately available. 'Please be vigilant and do not allow unknown people on your property or in your house,' the sheriff's release stated. St. Clair County hasn't received any reports of similar crimes, according to Major Darren Fults with the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department.
