Wilmington will celebrate Independence Day with block party, not fireworks
While skies across Delaware will be brilliantly lit up with multicolored firework displays this Independence Day, the skies over the state's largest city will remain dark for Wilmington's official celebration.
'No, we will not have fireworks this year at all,' said Matthew Ford, Wilmington's new director of communications. Instead, the city will host a block party on July 5 from noon to 3 p.m. in Rodney Square. The daytime event aims to accommodate families with young children and others who may not attend late-night festivities.
Ford emphasized that skipping fireworks is not a budget decision. He explained the decision reflects a shift toward more inclusive and varied celebrations, with an eye on next year's 250th anniversary of the nation's founding.
'A lot of this is in preparation for the Wilmington 250th/America 250th Celebration, which will be next year and we have plans moving forward for that,' Ford said.

The city's communications director also pointed to Rodney Square's symbolic role as the heart of Wilmington, making it a fitting location for the administration's intentions to hold more family friendly events. He added that holding the event during the day helps accommodate families with young children who might otherwise miss out on traditional late-night fireworks.
Whether fireworks will return for future Fourth of July celebrations in Wilmington remains undecided.
