Beloved Ice Cream Chain Suddenly Closes Multiple Stores
On the heels of other locations closing down, Dairy Queen is shuttering an additional dozen stores. According to The Street, as of April 2025, Dairy Queen closed multiple stores in Texas. The publication lists Dairy Queen closures in Hemphill, Jasper, Kountze, Huntington, Longview Eastman, and Lufkin. At least 25 Dairy Queens in Texas closed their doors and went on the auction block earlier this year, Lehigh Valley News reported. KETK reported that the April closings added another 12 restaurants to the list. 'These closures are related to closures last month by the same franchise owner,' a Dairy Queen spokesperson said of the closures to The Street. 'The closures are an isolated event, and we refrain from publicly sharing contract terms." After the first round of closings in February, KETK "obtained court documents between the American Dairy Queen Corporation and Project Lone Star, who owned 38 franchise locations in Texas," the television station reported, adding that the documents say the corporation "would terminate their franchise rights if they did not remodel the locations." One of the store managers, Becky Setters, posted a message on Facebook. "I have given a long hard 31 years to Dairy Queen and the hardest part of this for me is my entire crew and their families. Please keep us all in your thoughts and prayers," she wrote. Dairy Queen didn't even make the 2024 list of the top fast-food restaurant chains in the U.S., according to Food According to USA Today, Texas has the most Dairy Queen restaurants still, with about 560. There are more than more than 7,700 DQ restaurants in over 20 countries, according to the company's website. "Multiple Dairy Queen locations are closing their doors and must liquidate the assets," an online auction read, although it's now closed.
