He broadcast his young cancer journey. His last message: ‘Life was awesome.'

AMERICAN FORK, Utah — Beneath the dusty green of the midsummer mountains, Shay Martin cradled her infant daughter — not quite two months old — and leaned in to kiss the smooth wood of her husband's casket. A joyful constellation of Star Wars stickers — tiny stormtroopers, droids, Princess Leias — placed by family and friends covered the surface. Nearby, a harpist threaded together hymns with music from the film series' beloved score.

American Fork woman accused of conspiring to murder husband pleads guilty

AMERICAN FORK, Utah () — The woman who was charged with murder and criminal conspiracy after her husband's death has pleaded guilty. Investigators from the American Fork Police Department believed that she worked with family members to 'lure' him to his death. His wife, Kathryn Restelli, cried as she pleaded guilty to murder, a second-degree felony; conspiracy to commit murder, a second-degree felony; and felony discharge of a firearm, a first-degree felony. The remaining charges were dismissed. Restelli was initially charged with murder, a first-degree felony; criminal conspiracy, a second-degree felony; obstruction of justice, a second-degree felony; and two counts of domestic violence in the presence of a child, a third-degree felony. The sentencing was scheduled for September 9, 2025. The court expects the victim's family and friends to file letters and attend the sentencing to deliver impact statements. PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Wife, mother-in-law arrested in connection to July 2024 death of man in American Fork Background Tracey Marie Grist, Kathryn Restelli, and Kevin Stanley Ellis are accused of conspiring to commit the July 2024 shooting death of Kathryn Restelli's husband. Kevin Ellis — Grist's son and Kathryn Restelli's brother — was for shooting his brother-in-law. Police said a knife was found in Matthew Restelli's hand at the scene. Matthew Restelli, a California resident, had been living separately from his wife for several months, according to witness testimony. Matthew Restelli's mother, that Kathryn Restelli said she needed a 'breather' and took the family's truck, taking the children and leaving Temecula, CA, without telling her husband. He was very concerned until Kathryn Restelli told him she was spending several weeks living with Grist, her mother, in American Fork. According to Diane Restelli, on July 12, 2024 — the day her son was killed — she was told that Kathryn Restelli was going to rent a vehicle to return to her and Matthew Restelli's residence in California after three weeks in Utah. She later found out her son was driving to pick up his family in Utah because Kathryn Restelli could not rent a vehicle. LEARN MORE: American Fork woman who allegedly conspired to kill son-in-law appears in court When Matthew Restelli arrived at the home in the American Fork gated community, he was shot multiple times by Ellis. Grist contacted 911, and police and emergency medical services responded to the scene. Upon arrival, officers discovered some suspicious factors. Matthew Restelli was pronounced dead at the scene, and a knife was in his hand; however, officers observed that he was gripping it the wrong way, alongside other suspicious circumstances. 'Matthew Restelli is left-handed, and he's holding [the knife] in his right hand. Along with that, during the autopsy, a bullet wound was found in his right wrist… the same hand he's holding the knife with,' Joseph Nordin, an American Fork officer who responded to the scene, testified. Nordin testified that Matthew Restelli's body was found near the stairs in the entryway. He said that eight shell casings were found at the scene, and he had been shot six — possibly seven — times. Ellis claimed this was in self-defense. READ MORE: American Fork man arrested for alleged murder of brother-in-law Evidence recovered from Kathryn Restelli's devices allegedly showed that she was researching spousal homicide cases and 'what attracts mountain lions to humans' before her husband's death. Around the same time, Grist was researching gun laws and recent shootings in Utah. Nordin testified that Grist and Kathryn Restilli were charged with criminal conspiracy because they allegedly coordinated a plan to bring Matthew Restelli to the home on July 12 — including pretending Kathryn Restelli had an injured ankle and couldn't rent a vehicle, alongside the fact that she had not packed anything to return home to California. Kevin Ellis has a to start on January 20, 2026. Grist has pleaded not guilty to all counts and has a jury trial scheduled to start on January 12, 2026. Charges are allegations only. How a Utah Woman Lured Husband to His Death — and Saw Plot Undone by One Critical Mistake

Kathryn Restelli has pleaded guilty to multiple felony charges in connection with her estranged husband's murder last JulyNEED TO KNOW Kathryn Restelli pleaded guilty to murder and conspiracy to commit murder in connection with her estranged husband Matthew Restelli's July 2024 death Kathryn Restelli lured her husband to her mother's home, where her brother ambushed Matthew Restelli and shot him Kathryn Restelli's brother Kevin Ellis and mother Tracey Marie Grist are set to face their own jury trials in January 2026A Utah woman admitted in court this week that she conspired with her family to try and kill her husband after luring him to her mother's house last July. Kathryn Restelli pleaded guilty to two second-degree felonies for murder and conspiracy to commit murder, as well as a first-degree felony for discharging a firearm on Wednesday, July 16, according to KSL, ABC 4, and Fox 13. According to KSL, citing testimony from her trial, the 37-year-old woman lured her estranged husband Matthew Restelli to her mother's house in American Fork, Utah, by convincing him that she wanted to fix their relationship. ABC 4 reported that Matthew had been living separately from his wife for several months before the murder. Over the phone, Restelli convinced her husband to drive to her mother's house and told him to walk in the front door, which she said was open, according to KSL. When Matthew entered, Restelli's brother Kevin Ellis allegedly ambushed his brother-in-law and fatally shot him multiple times, according to the outlet, which cites authorities. KSL reported that testimony in Restelli's trial alleged that she, her brother, and their mother Tracey Marie Grist had planned to frame the murder as self-defense by lying to police that Matthew had entered the home without warning or permission. Grist allegedly called 911 minutes after the shooting, and when police arrived, they found a knife placed in Matthew's hand in a way that raised suspicion, according to ABC 4. KSL reported that Restelli was charged with murder under a Utah law that allows someone to be criminally prosecuted if they act in a clear mental state in an effort to commit or aid in a murder. According to the outlet, Restelli's guilty plea this week could possibly lower the charges against her brother and mother. Ellis and Grist's own jury trials are set to begin next January, according to ABC 4. Both are charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, obstruction of justice, and two counts of domestic violence in the presence of a child, Restelli is set to be sentenced on Sept. 9, according to KSL. She faces between six years to life in prison. Read the original article on People

‘If you're watching this, I'm dead': Influencer Tanner Martin announces his death at 30

'Hey, it's me, Tanner. If you're watching this, I am dead.' For the past several years, Tanner Martin documented his colon cancer diagnosis for hundreds of thousands of followers. That included rounds of chemo and radiation and half a dozen major surgeries, as well as a visit to his future gravesite. It also included more joyful moments, like a vow renewal ceremony in Ireland with his wife, Shay Martin, and other trips abroad. Just last month, it included the arrival of their first child, AmyLou, after the in vitro fertilisation experience they chronicled. But on June 25, Shay Martin, Tanner's wife, posted one final video on behalf of her husband, who had recorded the message to be posted when he died. He was 30. The five-minute video has been viewed more than eight million times on TikTok, and over three million times on Instagram. Watch the video below: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Shay Martin (@tannerandshay) Tanner was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer in November 2020. In February 2023, he learned that the cancer was terminal. And in April of that year, the couple began posting on TikTok about his treatments, their grief and preparations for Tanner's eventual death. The Washington Post visited the family as they were preparing for their daughter's birth. Tanner died at home in American Fork, Utah, on Wednesday surrounded by family, Shay said. Her husband recorded the goodbye video in March. 'I had a heck of a life,' Tanner says in the video, adding that recording a message before his death was 'a good opportunity to get all your thoughts out.' He added that it might give his wife the space to grieve. The couple posted less than a week ago that he had entered hospice care. Who was Tanner Martin? Tanner Martin was born on December 22, 1994, in Salt Lake City before moving to China and Taiwan for a few years with his parents, Kimberly Watts and Tom Martin, who taught English. The family eventually settled in Draper, Utah. When he was 18, Tanner served in a mission in Arizona for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. That's where he met Shay, whose father, Steve Wright, was a bishop in the church. Two stayed in touch on Facebook and eventually reconnected back in Utah. They married in 2018. Tanner was pursuing a master's degree to become a marriage and family therapist when he was diagnosed with cancer. Shay first started sharing updates on social media as a way to keep family up to date onTanner's treatment. But they quickly discovered a network of cancer fighters and caregivers. 'Death is like a new adventure' 'Being my age, none of my friends were going through anything similar,' Shay said in an interview on June 26 as she took a break from feeding AmyLou. 'It was really nice to met people in similar situations that we could connect with.' The couple wanted to be open about their experiences, 'the good, the bad, the ugly, the hard and the beautiful,' she said. 'It's been both beauty and really hard.' In the video, Tanner asks his followers to continue to support his wife and their daughter with donations and gift cards. 'I'm going to guess Jiaozi will probably like milk,' he says with a laugh, using a nickname for AmyLou, before holding his head in his hand. She earned the nickname Jiaozi, which means dumpling in Mandarin, at the couple's first ultrasound when Tanner dotingly noted the resemblance. 'Life was awesome. I really enjoyed it while I was here,' Tanner says. 'I believe there's something after this. I'm excited to meet those people, and hopefully we're hanging out now and making fun of all you nerds.' He left with a few words of advice: Be kind to one another and assume good intent from others. 'Death is scary, but it's also like a new adventure, you know,' he says. 'I'm excited to see what the experience is like, and hopefully it's good.'
