Abu drops new summer album Toba - Music - Arts & Culture

Egyptian singer and songwriter Abu has joined this year's summer music season with the release of his new album Toba, which dropped on Monday, 21 July. Released via Abu's official YouTube channel and major streaming platforms, Toba features six new tracks that blend diverse musical styles into a distinctive fusion. While the album embraces a bright, summery spirit, Abu has revealed that he plans to release another album later this year, tailored to suit the winter season. The title track, Toba, is composed by Mohamed Hamza and arranged by Ramy Samir. The song's cheerful melody blends traditional musical elements—characteristic of Abu's signature style—with contemporary Egyptian pop, adding a refreshing twist. The lyrics, written by Mohamed El-Qayati, offer a playful and light-hearted celebration of love. The accompanying music video, directed by Omar Donia, adopts a slightly comedic tone and was filmed in Qanater El-Khayriya, capturing a genuine popular atmosphere among the locals. The album also includes Balash Beleil and Come Back, both composed by Abu. Additional highlights include Ban Ban, composed by Tayam Aly, and Alby Aho, composed by Karim Ashour—both tracks feature prominent darbouka rhythms embellished with layered percussion. In contrast, Ahla Haga, with lyrics and music by Tarek Nadem, leans into joyful, melodic arrangements that reinforce the album's summer mood through its celebration of a beloved. Abu's journey Abu is an Egyptian singer and songwriter born into a family with a rich artistic heritage. His father, a celebrated Sufi poet, introduced him to the power of language and rhythm from an early age. He began playing piano and guitar at the age of eight and went on to study Business Administration at the American University in Cairo (AUC). Abu's musical breakthrough came in 2012 with the release of El-Nas Mabterhamsh (People Have No Mercy), a politically charged track that struck a chord with Egyptian audiences. The song's success ultimately led him to leave his corporate career and pursue music full-time. In 2017, he rose to regional fame with the hit single 3 Daqat, a summer duet with actress Yousra that became a viral sensation. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Crypts, corridors & sycamore tales: Khazana School for Heritage workshop concludes - Heritage special

Charming, colourful illustrations that waltz between time and space were on display. These vivid scenes were part of a leather-covered, handcrafted storybook titled News of Crypts and Corridors and Stories of Sycamore Trees. The rhymed story, based on oral legends from the districts of Manial and Roda, is the brainchild of published author and writer Mariam Abdel Aziz. 'It's an illustrated book—more of a story that is read, viewed, and heard because I also have it in a podcast,' Mariam told Ahram Online. 'It's a project that combines different art forms: there is Arabic calligraphy, illustrations by Israa Kamal, the writing, and the storytelling,' she added. The book is one of several outcomes from last week's closing ceremony of the workshop titled Joy and Content: Narratives and Entertainment Heritage of Roda Island and Manial District, organized by Khazana School for Heritage in collaboration with the American University in Cairo's (AUC) Rare Books and Special Collections Library. 'I used to collaborate with Khazana in telling stories they collected from other districts, such as Fagalla, but this Manial experience—I lived it from the beginning. I learned how to collect oral information, what tangible and intangible heritage means, and how to interview people. We gathered so many stories, and among them were legends. The legends were the most inspiring to me,' she explained. Mariam based her book on the legend of the Al-Mandoura tree—an ancient sycamore believed by some to be a source of fertility for barren women and by others to possess healing properties for the skin. 'The tree had its own guard, which is something very novel. His name is Am Khalifa. He's a legend himself—his origins and personal life remain unknown,' she added. The rhymed story, written in the classical maqama style of Arabic literature, takes readers on a journey through urban legends doubting the existence of crypts and corridors in the Manial district. The plot flows swiftly through the multicultural layers of Manial and Roda, weaving together cultural figures, landmarks, Sufi walis, and the historic Nilometer. AUC joins international initiative to bolster Egypt's healthcare system

The American University in Cairo (AUC) announced on Sunday that a team of its faculty and researchers is collaborating on a project to assess and enhance the Egyptian healthcare system, as the country aims to expand its national universal health insurance to all citizens by 2030. The AUC team, led by Hesham Dinana, an assistant professor in AUC's Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, is working alongside Egypt's Ministry of Health and Population, the London School of Economics, and other academics. This project is part of the Partnership for Health System Sustainability and Resilience (PHSSR), an international collaboration involving academia, governments, and the private sector, dedicated to strengthening healthcare systems worldwide. Egypt is noted as the first African country to join this global initiative. A comprehensive report, resulting from this collaboration, has analysed and provided recommendations across seven critical domains of Egypt's healthcare system: governance, financing, workforce, medicines and technology, service delivery, population health, and environmental sustainability, aiming to identify its strengths and weaknesses. 'This project aims to create lasting solutions that improve access, early detection, and overall care for all Egyptians. So many studies end up with recommendations that never go into action, and that's something I wanted to avoid from the beginning,' Dinana said. Building on the report's findings, the team is now developing two key initiatives for implementation within Egypt's healthcare reform. These include creating a centralised health data platform to improve decision-making and resource allocation, and establishing a fair financing system. This system will aim to match healthcare spending with the most common health issues and utilise new payment methods to maintain manageable and sustainable costs. Dinana explained that these efforts are designed to ensure resources are distributed where they are most needed. 'By using advanced data and innovative payment models, we can create a system that not only improves healthcare outcomes but also makes it more affordable and equitable for all, especially the most vulnerable populations.' The research team is currently working with the government and the private sector to launch educational and advocacy programmes that will support the implementation of these initiatives. Serving on the project's advisory board from AUC are Mohamed Salama, professor and graduate programme director at AUC's Institute of Global Health and Human Ecology (IGHHE), and Fayrouz Sakr-Ashour, assistant professor at IGHHE. The report's AUC-affiliated co-authors include Basma Saleh (MPH '23), Hebatalla Ismail (MPH '24), Eman Abu Aly (MPH '25), and Marwa Hafiz (MPH '25), who also serves as the project's coordinator. Researchers from other institutions contributing to the report include Fatma MA Barakat from the American University of Beirut and Ranin Soliman from the University of Oxford. 'We as a team believe that focusing on healthcare and education as Egypt's top priorities is crucial right now,' Dinana noted. 'Healthcare is not just a medical field; it intersects with finance, economics, communications, and engineering. It requires a diverse set of skills, many of which we have here at AUC. This partnership demonstrates that we are trusted to produce world-class solutions,' he concluded.

The finale saw the two ensembles ignite the stage with a spellbinding performance—a masterful blend of traditional instruments, commanding vocals, and intricate choreography—that captivated every one and drew thunderous applause.
