Not Even Taylor Swift Can Steal 'America's Team' Title From Cowboys

Not Even Taylor Swift Can Steal 'America's Team' Title From Cowboys originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO - Make no mistake, it's good to have Taylor Swift on your side. And the Kansas City Chiefs have - in so many delightful ways - "weaponized'' her fandom, the result of her romantic relationship with tight end Travis Kelce. Advertisement Nevertheless... No matter what the internet might claim, "America's Team'' - on the Fourth of July and every other day of the year - is still the Dallas Cowboys. Forever. The Kansas City Chiefs are most everything a franchise should aspire to be. They win at the highest level. They've built something special with Patrick Mahomes and coach Andy Reid and, of course, the future Hall of Famer Kelce. And in the last couple of years, they have benefited from the added attention that came with Swift's involvement. The dating life, the presence at games -- it's all a marketing dream for that team and for the NFL. Advertisement But "America's Team'' is not a transferable title. It doesn't shift from city to city depending on who wins the Super Bowl. (By the way, if it did, "America's Team'' would be the Philadelphia Eagles... and good God nobody wants that.) What shifts from city to city is called the "Lombardi Trophy.'' Dallas became "America's Team'' because of success and visibility and marketing, with NFL Films in the late-70's having recognized this and then coining the phrase. Coach Tom Landry hated it. It put a bullseye on his Cowboys. The bullseye remains. And so does the nickname. No matter what. The Cowboys went 7–10 last year and still averaged more viewers per game than almost anyone else in football. Still packed prime-time slots. Still sold merchandise. Still owned headlines. Advertisement And they did it without a global pop star helping to boost the signal. The Thanksgiving Day matchup last year featuring the Cowboys and Giants? 38.8 million viewers, peaking at 41.3 million — the most-watched NFL game of the entire regular season. And that will happen again this year. It's why the NFL's Game 1 is Dallas vs. Philly. It's why this season's Thanksgiving game - KC at Dallas - will likely set new records. It's about branding. And Jerry Jones has no intention of ever letting that slip away. If Taylor Swift shows up at this year's Chiefs-at-Cowboys Thanksgiving game, which will allow both franchises to bask in her glow? Advertisement The "America's Team'' debate will rage again. But the facts won't change... in part because the Cowboys aren't just "America's Team.'' They're America's favorite team to hate. Which is, in a way, another form of love. Non-transferable. Cowboys Vs. Chiefs Sparks ‘America's Team' Debate

FRISCO — The NFL has turned to its cash cow yet again for some major prime time spots. Once more, the Dallas Cowboys are a featured entity on the league's holiday schedule. This time around, "America's Team is double-dipping with their usual Thanksgiving Day contest and another matchup on Christmas Day. But its the Turkey Day matchup causing a fuss on social media. Advertisement Dallas will host the Kansas City Chiefs in arguably one of the league's highest profile matchups of the season. The game has the potential to set regular season viewership records. However, there is much debate in determining who the "A" side of this bout actually is. Former Chiefs backup Chase Daniel believes it to be his team and even made a case as to why they have overtaken the claim to being "America's Team." "If you talk about on-field success, the sustained success of the Chiefs has brought global brand recognition," he said Wednesday on FS1's "The Facility." "If it wasn't Cowboys [versus] Chiefs this game would pull 38, 39 million. But because of the Chiefs, it's going to pull 50 million. "Last year the Chiefs are the most watched football team of anyone on average... The NFL is better when the Cowboys are good, but when you look at what the Chiefs have done, it's really hard not to say the Chiefs aren't the new 'America's Team." Advertisement The success is undeniable and frankly Cowboys fans will not even argue that point. But Daniel is getting his evaluation of brand power mixed up in the first place. The Cowboys are consistently the backbone to any major matchup, regular season or playoffs. The league understands that allotting them special treatment on these holiday broadcasts or in a prime time slot raises the floor of the product they put out. Now Kansas City's own widespread fan base will be able to fully capitalize on the floor the Cowboys set. But if the latter is removed from the equation, the Chiefs themselves are simply less of a draw. Any claim the Chiefs or another franchise makes to the "America's Team" moniker simply have no legs and are just odd in practice. The Cowboys claimed that title first and that brand has lasted through some rough years. Advertisement Nonetheless, the brand power of both sides will drive this much anticipated holiday season matchup. Hopefully the teams can deliver on the hype.
