Amid claims of overhaul, new appointments of Gujarat Congress fail to enthuse party

Congress's pilot project to restructure the party from grounds up doesn't seem to have enthused the workers as the party high command would have wanted to. While the appointments of district presidents after elaborate 'consultative process' largely proved to be more of reputations, the appointment of new Congress Gujarat President Amit Chavda and assembly leader of opposition Siddharth Chaudhary has failed to excite the workers. He became the leader of opposition in January 2023 after the 2022 Gujarat election that saw Congress staging its worst ever performance. Son of former Gujarat Chief Minister Amarsinh Chaudhary, and a former union minister, Siddarth Chaudhary, has not been known for his acumen as a parliamentarian and is believed to be usually reticent and distant from the workers. Live Events Range of Congress leaders and workers that ET spoke to across the state seem to be echoing the sentiments in various degrees. In North Gujarat, a young leader with considerable ground swell maintained that the selection by the party high command has failed the aspirations of people who hoped that there could be some fresh blood injected in the party through the process. While the Patidar leaders of the party were clamouring for some representation in the top echelon of the party, senior Patel leaders told ET that in spite of their repeated attempts, they failed to manage an audience with Rahul Gandhi . 'This is frustrating but in present condition no one is in a position to rebel. So what you will see is that everyone will toe the party line in public but steadily withdrawing from active participation, which is a bad news for Congress that has suffered its worst electoral blow in 2022 state election.' Party sources maintain that It is learnt that the party may appoint Paresh Dhanani as the Chairman of the Campaign Committee to balance the Patidar demands. However that, according to party workers may be too little too late for the party which is practically fighting an existential crisis in the state. A senior party functionary told ET that the high command was left with very little elbow room to operate while picking up its leaders and had to do with what it had.

‘We warned them': Congress slams Gujarat govt over Vadodara bridge collapse; says it was a disaster waiting to happen

The Gujarat Congress has criticized the state government for negligence following the collapse of the Gambhira bridge in Vadodara, which resulted in nine fatalities. Despite repeated warnings about the bridge's deteriorating condition, authorities allegedly failed to take action. NEW DELHI: The Gujarat Congress came down heavily on the state government holding it responsible for the bridge collapse incident in Vadodara that claimed nine lives on Wednesday. Party leader Amit Chavda said that the incident occurred due to state government's negligence. "The Gambhira bridge that connects Anand and Vadodara districts collapsed this morning. The traffic from the entire Saurashtra passes through here. We had demanded from the government again and again, and people had written to them a that the bridge was not in good condition and it should be repaired. But the government paid no heed. That is why the incident occurred," Chavda told ANI. He claimed that the crumbling bridge and ignored warnings were a perfect recipe for disaster. The bridge, which connects Padra and Mujpur and serves as a key connector between Central Gujarat and Saurashtra, gave way around 7.30am, sending a truck, a van, and a car into the Mahisagar river below. Locals were the first to respond, followed by police, fire brigade, and disaster response teams. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giá vàng đang tăng mạnh trong năm 2025 — Các nhà giao dịch thông minh đã tham gia IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Vadodara (Rural) SP Rohan Anand confirmed the deaths, while Anand MP Mitesh Patel said three bodies had been recovered and four persons rescued. 3 Killed After Vehicles Fall Into River As Bridge Collapses In Gujarat

New Delhi: Three people were killed and several vehicles fell into the Mahisagar (Mahi) River after a section of the Gambhira-Mujpur bridge in Padra taluka of Gujarat's Vadodara collapsed on Wednesday, The bridge, which connects the Anand and Vadodara districts, gave way during peak morning traffic hours, resulting in fatalities and injuries to three others. According to initial reports, four vehicles, including two trucks, a Bolero SUV, and a pickup van, were crossing the bridge when it suddenly crumbled. Eyewitnesses said a loud cracking noise was heard moments before the vehicles dropped into the river. Fire brigade teams, local police, and members of the Vadodara district administration rushed to the spot and launched immediate rescue operations. Locals also joined in, helping to extract the injured from the wreckage. So far, three people have been rescued and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Padra MLA Chaitanyasinh Zala visited the site shortly after the incident. Authorities have cordoned off the area to prevent further accidents and initiated a probe into the cause of the collapse. Locals allege that the bridge, a key artery linking Central Gujarat to Saurashtra and vital for commuters between Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, and Ankleshwar, had long been neglected by the administration. "The Gambhira bridge has become notorious not just as a traffic hazard but also as a suicide point. Repeated warnings about its condition were ignored," said one resident. Senior Congress leader Amit Chavda posted on social media: "The main Gambhira bridge connecting Anand and Vadodara districts has collapsed. Many vehicles have fallen into the river, and major casualties are feared. The administration must immediately carry out rescue operations and arrange alternate routes for traffic." Drivers were continuing to search the river for any missing persons, and cranes had been brought in to retrieve the submerged vehicles. More details were awaited. A detailed technical inspection and safety audit of similar structures in the region is expected to follow.

Congress alleges larger scam in NREGA, Nal Se Jal schemes

Vadodara: The Congress party has alleged that there is a much larger scam in the NREGA scheme in Dahod district. It said that many representations were received from across the district about irregularities in NREGA and the Nal Se Jal schemes. A 'Janmanch' programme was held in Dahod district by the Congress on Tuesday, while an investigation is underway in the Rs 71 crore NREGA scam . The Congress party earlier raised the issue during the assembly session and prepared a report on the scam. Leader of opposition Amit Chavda , who was following up on the scam, was present during the programme in Dahod. Chavda said the scam was not limited to Devgadhbaria and Dhanpur talukas, where the minister's sons were involved. He said representations received during the programme on Wednesday revealed that similar scams took place at other places too. He added that there were irregularities in the Nal Se Jal scheme as well. He said he has received evidence in this regard. Chavda said that the minister of state for panchayats and agriculture Bachu Khabad had claimed that the Congress was levelling allegations against him. "An offence was registered, the police conducted investigations, and the court also granted remand. If we were wrong, why is this happening? If the govt does not restrain itself, more names will crop up," said Chavda.
