IIT-BHU, Hindalco ink MoU for research-based internship programme
Varanasi: In a major step toward strengthening industry-academia ties, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), BHU and Hindalco Industries Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding ( MoU ) on Tuesday to launch a six-month research-driven internship programme for students. The internships will be hosted at Hindalco's Renukoot plant. The initiative aims to provide engineering students with the opportunity to engage in real-world industrial environments, allowing them to work on production, process control, and innovation-driven projects. The collaboration is expected to significantly enhance students' practical knowledge while contributing to national missions such as 'Make in India', 'Viksit Bharat 2047', and 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat'. Given the growing potential of aluminium-based technologies, this partnership is a forward-looking step towards long-term industrial advancement. Speaking on the occasion, IIT-BHU Director Prof Amit Patra said, "This partnership will allow students to undertake research in a dynamic industrial environment, equipping them with deeper insights and fostering innovation. Collaborating with a global industry leader like Hindalco brings tremendous value to this initiative." Echoing similar sentiments, Prof. Sushant Kumar Srivastava noted, "This MoU will significantly strengthen students' exposure to industrial processes and sharpen their professional capabilities, while also driving innovation in India's metal sector. It marks a leap forward in enriching technical education."

Parliament panel visits BHU, reviews academic practices
Varanasi: The parliamentary standing committee on education, women, children, youth and sports conducted a study visit to Banaras Hindu University and IIT-BHU on Tuesday. Led by Rajya Sabha Member Digvijay Singh, members from both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha held meetings at the central office of the university with BHU and other higher education institutions. Committee members included MPs Bikas Ranjan Bhattacharya, Bheem Singh, Rajiv Rai, Rekha Sharma, Brijmohan Agrawal, Amardev Sharaddav Kale, Hemang Joshi and Shobhanaben Mahendrasingh Baraiya. The meeting was attended by SK Barnwal, additional secretary, ministry of education, Union govt, Acting Vice-Chancellor of BHU Prof Sanjay Kumar, director of Institute of Medical Sciences BHU Prof SN Sankhwar, director of Institute of Management Studies BHU Prof Ashish Bajpai, director of IIT-BHU Prof Amit Patra, director of apprenticeship training board, Kanpur, Vivek Kumar, registrar of central university, Allahabad, Prof Ashish Khare, dean-teaching of Motilal Nehru NIT Allahabad Prof Lakshmi Kant Mishra and Kashi Vidyapith VC Prof AK Tyagi, representing the higher education department of the Uttar Pradesh govt. The meeting reviewed best practices, key achievements and challenges (financial, human resources, space and administrative) in the teaching, industry-academic collaboration and research ecosystem of higher education institutions. After the meeting, committee members visited the 'CDC Building,' where they were briefed on various aspects of research and innovation at the university. They toured the 'Student Activity Centre' and 'Precision Engineering Hub (PEH)' at IIT-BHU, which was crucial for understanding academic and technical innovations. Earlier, the committee members received a grand welcome at the main gate of BHU. They visited Malaviya Bhavan, where they paid floral tributes to the statue of the university's founder Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya. The IIT -BHU also extended a warm welcome to the chairman of the parliamentary standing committee Digvijay Singh and its members. The event was organised at the institute's Student Activity Centre, where director Prof Amit Patra welcomed the committee members. Prof. Patra provided a detailed introduction to the new initiatives undertaken by the institute under the National Education Policy NEP. He shared information about new academic programmes, research culture, advanced R&D activities and effective placement efforts. He reiterated the institute's commitment to continuously enhancing academic and research quality to meet global standards. Additionally, the delegation visited the state-of-the-art Precision Engineering Hub, where they observed technical expertise and innovation capabilities.

Kolkata: IIT-Kharagpur Jadavpur University and Calcutta University are the only three institutes from Bengal that have made it to QS World Ranking 2026. While IIT-Kharagpur and JU improved their rank, CU's position saw a dip. The list this year features 54 institutes from the QS World University Rankings, published annually by the London-based global higher education analytics firm Quacquarelli Symonds, assess universities based on performance indicators, like academic reputation, faculty-student ratio, research impact, international student diversity, graduate has climbed seven spots from 222nd rank last year to 215th. It also ranked 4th among the IITs. The new IIT Kharagpur director, Suman Chakraborty, said, "We have performed better than last year but our rank can improve if we can create a positive impression on the outer world as perception plays an important role." The outgoing acting director, Amit Patra, said, "Our performance in citations per faculty, international research network and sustainability, helped us better our position."At 676, JU's rank improved significantly from last year's position between 721 and 730. "As a state-run institute, we have constraints, including funds crunch. Still, JU has been performing well. The credit goes to our teachers', researchers' and students' dedication. Improvement in areas, like faculty-student ratio, international student diversity and international student ratio, could have advanced our rank, but they do not depend entirely on the university," said an rank dropped to a place between 771 and 780 from last year's 751 to 760. CU acting VC Santa Datta said, "The rank has slightly dipped but it's a proud moment that we are still among institutes on the world ranking list. With limited resources, my aim is to develop the university holistically, focusing on research and international network."

Professor Suman Chakraborty appointed IIT Kharagpur director, Education News, ET Education
Advt Kolkata, Suman Chakraborty , the Institute Chair Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department of IIT Kharagpur , and Sir J C Bose National Fellow of the Department of Science and Technology, has been appointed the director of IIT Kharagpur, the institute said in a statement on Friday who will take over from the current acting director professor Amit Patra, will be in office for a period of five years with effect from the date of taking charge or till attaining the age of 70 years, whichever is was recently awarded the 2026 TWAS Award in Engineering and Computer Sciences by the UNESCO for his seminal work in micro and nanoscale flows, enabling innovations in diagnostic technologies and improving rural livelihoods and healthcare access for the marginalised was featured in the list of top 100 researchers across all disciplines in Asia in 2023.A recipient of the National Award for Teachers 2023, a laureate of Infosys Prize-2022 and the winner of the coveted Santi Swaroop Bhatnagar Prize, Chakraborty has been elected as a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the ASME, Alexander von Humboldt, and all the Indian National Academies of Science and Engineering, the institute who has been appointed as a full-time director by the Centre, joined IIT Kharagpur in 2002 as an assistant professor and has been a senior professor since January 1, IIT BHU (Varanasi) director Amit Patra took over as the acting director of IIT Kharagpur, after the end of term of V K Tewari, who was the institute's director till December 31, 2024.

Award-winning professor Suman Chakraborty is new IIT Kharagpur director
Suman Chakraborty, a distinguished figure in mechanical engineering, was appointed the new IIT Kharagpur on June 19.
