NMDC looking to acquire critical mineral blocks overseas: CMD Amitava Mukherjee
New Delhi: State-owned iron ore producer NMDC is actively evaluating offshore acquisitions of critical mineral blocks, its CMD Amitava Mukherjee said adding it will strengthen the company's presence in the global value chain. Critical minerals like antimony, lithium, cobalt, copper are essential for clean energy technologies like solar panels, wind turbines, EVs, and energy storage systems. India has launched the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) to ensure their long-term availability and processing. "As a part of its global mineral diversification strategy, NMDC has been actively evaluating acquisition opportunities across 10 strategic mineral assets globally and exploring critical mineral block acquisitions in Africa, Australia & South America to strengthen its presence in the global critical mineral value chain," Mukherjee said. On inauguration of NMDC office in Dubai, he said the city represents a gateway to global opportunity and the new office is poised to redefine the company's mining landscape. "With our expansion we are revolutionizing our approach to mineral development, securing India's position as a leader in the mining industry, driving innovation in resource utilization," Mukherjee told PTI. Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy inaugurated the NMDC office in Dubai this week. Hyderabad-based NMDC, under Ministry of Steel , contributes around 17-20 per cent to India's total iron ore production . In July 2023, the government released a list of 30 critical minerals for India. These include antimony, beryllium, bismuth, cobalt, copper, gallium, lithium, molybdenum, niobium, nickel, among others. PTI

NMDC opens international office in Dubai, eyes critical mineral assets across Africa, Australia
New Delhi: State-owned mining company NMDC opened its international office in Dubai , aiming to enhance its global footprint and accelerate the acquisition of critical and strategic mineral assets across Africa, Australia, South America, and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The Dubai office will serve as NMDC's international operations centre and provide real-time market intelligence, support technical and legal due diligence, and facilitate engagement with local authorities and business partners. Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries H.D. Kumaraswamy inaugurated the office in the presence of Indian Ambassador to the UAE Sunjay Sudhir, NMDC CMD Amitava Mukherjee, SAIL CMD Amarendu Prakash, and Consul General of India in Dubai Satish Kumar Sivan. Speaking at the launch, CMD Amitava Mukherjee said, 'Dubai represents a gateway to global opportunity. With this new office, NMDC is poised to redefine the mining landscape. With our expansion we are revolutionizing our approach to mineral development, securing India's position as a leader in the mining industry, driving innovation in resource utilization.' The Dubai centre will track developments in the global mining sector, including government policies and regulatory changes, and provide timely decision support to NMDC's leadership. It will also be instrumental in facilitating partnerships in Mining Equipment and Technology Services (METS) and in building a global network for peer insights and data sharing. NMDC is currently evaluating ten global strategic mineral assets and is exploring options to acquire critical mineral blocks in resource-rich geographies. The international presence is expected to strengthen India's integration into global mineral supply chains and ensure resource security . The company said the Dubai office will serve as a hub for its international engagement efforts, supporting India's ambitions in the critical minerals domain.

Nagarnar steel plant in Bastar achieves highest-ever hot metal output at 11,101 tonnes

RAIPUR: NMDC Steel Ltd.(NSL), Nagarnar plant of Chhattisgarh's Bastar region has marked a record-breaking performance on June 22, across several operational units at its integrated steel plant. The company registered its highest-ever hot metal output at 11,101 tonnes, operating at 117% of the blast furnace's rated capacity. This was complemented by peak efficiencies across departments, including a best-ever blast furnace (BF) coke yield of 79%, following improvements in coke cutter performance. The plant achieved a shift-highest hot metal production of 3,759 tonnes during the C-shift, breaking the earlier shift record of 3,729 tonnes achieved on April 14, 2025. The day also saw enhanced material handling and throughput, with coal reclaiming to silo crossing 10,000 tonnes and sinter transfer to the blast furnace reaching a new benchmark of 18,203 tonnes. Iron Ore Lump (IOL) transfer touched 5,910 tonnes surpassing previous highest records. On the oxygen front, the plant's oxygen generating unit achieved an enhanced supply of 34,000 normal cubic meters per hour (Nm³/hr), exceeding the contractual value and enabling high-volume, continuous operations. The Steel Melting Shop (SMS) recorded 52 heats tapped, producing 9,400 tonnes of liquid steel. Additionally, the By-Product Plant (BPP) saw its sulphur unit reach the highest daily output of the financial year at 1,000 kilograms. Amitava Mukherjee, CMD, NMDC Steel Ltd., said, 'For a young plant like NSL, this milestone reflects the strength of teamwork and synergy across departments. Every unit has played a vital role in achieving this record, and together, we are steadily progressing toward our vision of becoming a world-class steel producer.'
