Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown and Vikings WR Justin Jefferson are on the same wavelength
(Image via Getty: Amon-Ra St. Brown and Justin Jefferson) Both the Minnesota Vikings of Justin Jefferson and the Detroit Lions of Amon-Ra St. Brown scored 14-2 in the 2024 NFL season. They were up against each other next. Whoever won would get a bye week and home-field advantage throughout the postseason. But who lost? Had to compete again with a 10-7(Tampa Bay Buccaneers) or 9-8(Atlanta Falcons) in the wild-card round and start their playoff journey. It seems all too confusing. However, the wide receivers who faced it last year tried their level best to voice out their concerns. Amon-Ra St. Brown was not happy with the NFL Playoffs rule Back in January 2025, Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown wanted the NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, to change NFL rules. Which rule in particular? He voiced his opinion on his own podcast–St. Brown Podcast, 'It's crazy. I think the rule should be changed. Obviously, if you win the division, you should obviously make a playoff spot. But having a 14-win team having to go on the road is kind of crazy. But I guess I don't make the rules. Hopeful we can get a win and get home-field advantage, but whatever happens, we(Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings) both have a spot in the playoffs–so we might see each other again after this game.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Seven months later, Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson speaks the same language. Justin Jefferson wants wild-card teams to have a home-field advantage Talking to Jason Fitz of Yahoo Sports, the wide receiver said, 'With the season that we had last year, to go, and play with–it definitely was a little different. It definitely needs to be taken into consideration and something that we need to figure out because having 14 wins normally–doesn't go to play away in the playoffs. We definitely had the opportunity to play home-field advantage, with the last game in Detroit, but even losing that, we still felt like we should have had home-field advantage. But even not having home-field advantage is never an excuse. It's something we had to deal with, and we wish we had home-field advantage, but it is what it is.' Our Amon-Ra St. Brown interview: Expectations, celebrations and preparations
Since the arrival of Amon-Ra St. Brown in Detroit, there's been nothing but positive results. The losing seasons flipped into winning seasons and he's produced year over year. With that, he's blossomed into one of the most consistent receivers in the NFL and certainly one of the most productive. For Amon-Ra, it hasn't led to just success on the field. It's led to success off the field, as well. Throughout his career, we've seen him featured in commercials for Little Caesars Pizza, FedEx and others. Last summer, part of his ascension into stardom was by being featured on the Netflix series, Receiver. He was featured alongside other receivers such as Justin Jefferson and Davante Adams. This summer, it's a whole new accomplishment for Amon-Ra. It's been announced that Amon-Ra will be featured on the boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios in the fall. This is part of General Mills kicking off year two of its Cereal Training Camp. This year, they're introducing a new roster of cereal-loving football stars. As General Mills stated in their press release, "this season's wide receiver lineup brings the swagger, the celebrations and a serious love for breakfast — with Justin Jefferson, Ja'Marr Chase and Amon-Ra St. Brown putting their passion for competition and cereal to the test." I was fortunate enough to be able to interview Amon-Ra St. Brown ahead of training camp and the release of this new ad campaign. Here's what Amon-Ra had to say about his new partnership with Honey Nut Cheerios, the Lions new offense and so much more! RB: You will be featured on the Honey Nut Cheerios boxes this season. Athletes being featured on cereal boxes dates back to the 1930's with Lou Gehrig and over time we've seen a long list of great athletes such as Michael Jordan, Troy Aikman, Ken Griffey and so on. What's this mean for you to be able to partner with General Mills and grace the cover of Honey Nut Cheerios?ASB: Man, it's been awesome. Doing the training camp shoot with them was a blast. I had a lot of fun with it, recreating the headstand. Being on the cover of Honey Nut Cheerios for me, I remember being a kid, Honey Nut Cheerios is the first cereal I ever ate. It's the O.G. of cereal. Being on the box, doing my headstand, it's definitely a dream come true. My dad texted me when we were doing this shoot and everything. He goes, "congratulations, that's a big deal. I always wanted to be on the cover of Cheerios.' He understands that it's a big deal and I understand it's a big deal. Like I said, the way it all came about was natural and organic. For me, I love doing celebrations, so being able to do mine for the box was a lot of fun. To be with Ja'Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson, hang out with them and do the shoot. It was a blast. RB: There's so many options to choose from but is Honey Nut Cheerios your favorite type of cereal? And if so, why is it?ASB: For me, as a kid, your parents buy you food or get you food. And Cheerios is kind of nostalgic but it was also the first cereal I ever ate. I love the flavor. It's a simple flavor, not doing too much. It just brings me back to being a kid. RB: Do you spice it up and add fruit or anything to your Cheerios? ASB: Nah, I'm plain Jane with it. Just cereal and milk. RB: On the cover of the Honey Nut Cheerios box, fans will be able to see your headstand skills featured. Last season, we saw the famous headstand touchdown dance against the Green Bay Packers with Tim Patrick behind you. Did you think that this touchdown dance would take off the way that it did?ASB: Honestly, no. I had no idea. Before the game, I thought about doing it. One of my teammates from USC had done it with the Falcons (Drake London) and I was like, man, I might need to do another one. But I stuck with it. As I did it, after the game I saw the picture with Tim Patrick behind me. It just happened at the right time. The guy that took the picture, Tim Patrick doing what he did, and from then on, the fans of Detroit took off with it. I was on socks, the snowman, the cake, and whatever else they did. The fans loved it but I didn't expect it to blow up the way it did. RB: When you score, we're always ready for some type of dance from you. We know you're going to give us something. You've scored 30+ touchdowns in your career so far. I know it's hard to think back to all the dances but is the headstand dance your favorite or do you have another favorite celebration you've done so far? ASB: That's definitely up there because of what it meant to the fans and how they reacted to it. I feel like I've had a handful of celebrations that are near the top for me but the headstand one is definitely in my top-5. RB: Moving to a couple of quick football questions. It's pretty crazy to think that the season is right around the corner and the Detroit Lions play in the Hall of Fame Game at the end of the month. What are some things that you do throughout the summer to get ready for training camp and the season? ASB: Working out and training are the biggest things for me. When I get back from OTAs, you get like 6 weeks off. I take a quick vacation and then get back to training and working out. Just get ready for camp because I feel like camp is one of the hardest times for us during the year. Just because we're practicing every day, long practices in the heat, we have joint practices going against other teams or whatever it may be. I just like to train and get ready for camp and be in the best shape of my life. RB: We know the changes are coming within the offense and we don't have to get into too much detail because at the end of the day, football is football. Dagger concepts are dagger concepts, slot fades are slot fades, so on and so forth. But with Ben Johnson going to Chicago and John Morton coming over to run the offense in Detroit. Are there a lot of similarities or is it different and if it's different, has there been good changes up to this point? ASB: Yeah, it's been great. You know, I was able to sit back and watch. I wasn't running or practicing during OTAs but I was able to sit back and watch and kind of learn. Obviously, a lot of the stuff we did well last year or the last couple of years, we still kind of have in the offense. Stuff that we were successful at. There's still wrinkles that Johnny Morton is adding to the offense that we're enjoying. Something different, something that he feels like we can be good at and something that we feel like we can be good at too. It's been a lot of fun to get back into a new playbook, have to study and have to learn. Everyone is kind of in the same boat, which is cool. I'm excited to get back to camp, get to work, learn the offense. You know, there's going to be some struggles, obviously, because it's something new. But we're going to work out the kinks. I think we'll be just fine. At the end of the day, players make plays. We have the players on the team to make those plays. RB: When watching you play, you can win from all over the field and I think part of that is based on how you can attack the inside or outside leverage of a defender. Would you be able to go over some of the things that you look for from a defender before and during a play? ASB: Yeah, for me, it's obviously understanding defenses. You have to know pre-snap if it's man or zone. Obviously some times, teams disguise it. But for the most part, you know, you can kinda tell from the first second the ball is snapped. Understanding that is really big. Understanding the route you have, the progression that the quarterback is going through. If you're the first read, if you're the second read, the last read, if you have time to win, whatever the case may be. Who you're going against, there's so many factors that go into it. But at the end of the day, I'm going to do what I do. I'm going to play fast, the defender has to react to where I go. You know, I play offense and he plays defense. So I feel like I have the advantage off that alone. Like I said, just play fast and try to win and when the ball is in the air I gotta make a play.

Amon-Ra St. Brown's dad infuriates fans over ‘breeding' comments
The father of Detroit Lions wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown made waves online while discussing his sons' personal lives, specifically saying they should have children with Black women in order to 'breed' better athletes. John Brown and his wife, Miram, who is white, have three sons, including Equanimeous and Osiris, both of whom were Division I athletes. Equanimeous, a wide receiver and sixth-round draft pick in 2018, played for the Saints last year. Osiris was a wideout for Stanford but didn't pursue professional career due a lingering foot injury. On Saturday, the 'St. Brown' podcast — which is hosted by Amon-Ra and Equanimeous — posted a clip of John, a former bodybuilder, explaining his philosophy on 'breeding' and raising three athletic sons. Advertisement 4 Amon-Ra St. Brown in action for the Lions. Getty Images 'I believe in breeding,' John said. 'You gotta pick the right girl and the right guy… Look at you [both], good athlete, I'm Black, mom is white. I've done stepped on it once, you can't keep stepping on it because you're going to mess it up. You're going to weaken it… You can't keep cutting it. You and Brooklyn [Adams, Amon-Ra's fiancée], because Brooklyn's half and half, you've got a chance. Advertisement '… You've got to be careful, you've got to think about that. I'm Black, I've got the Black gold running through my veins, I'm excited and just going to find the right person to mate with. If I'm white, I'm saying, 'Let me get one of those brothers around here,' if you want to have athletes. If you don't want to have athletes, then just go ahead and spread your seed wherever. 4 John Brown discusses breeding and relationships with his sons on their podcast in August 2024. During a December 2021 appearance on the 'Momentum' podcast, John explained how he told his sons to marry a Black woman. 'You can't keep cutting that blackness… My sons, I'm like, 'Man, you're all half black and half white. So you better try to marry a black girl because you want some athletes… because if not you gotta know what it is. 'You need a volleyball girl, like [5-foot-9]… African American, oh yeah. Make sure her knees are lined up, you gotta be careful with that. 'I like little ankles, because they're swift. You want strong knees, and ask her about her family, but don't be so obvious… [Ask] did your dad play sports? Did your mom play? … You gotta think about these things.'

Former USC star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown to host football camp on Saturday, July 12
Former USC star Amon-Ra St. Brown has established himself as one of the top wide receivers in the NFL. In each of the past two seasons, St. Brown has been named a first-team All-Pro, leading the Detroit Lions to consecutive NFC North Division titles. Although he plays in Detroit now, Southern California will always be home to St. Brown. This weekend, the star wide receiver will be returning to his alma mater, Mater Dei High School, to co-host the fourth annual St. Brown Brothers Youth Football Camp with his brother, Equanimeous. "We're excited," St. Brown told me in an interview on Tuesday. "Hopefully it's gonna be around 300 kids. "It's always a lot of fun being with [the kids], hanging out with them, playing football, throwing the ball around . . . Just to be back at my old high school, and you know, being able to see some old people and things like that. It's always a lot of fun." The camp will be held on Saturday, July 12 from 9 a.m to 1 p.m., and will be open to children between the ages of 7 and 14. Those interested in attending the camp can register at

Data and Film: Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown more than just a slot merchant
Obviously, it's bit of a guessing game on how the Detroit Lions offense will look under new offensive coordinator John Morton. Compared to former offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson, it could look a lot different. Or it could look somewhat similar. It's obviously a waiting game filled with a whole lot of guessing and anticipation. One thing that will remain constant in the Detroit Lions offense is the presence of wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. Entering his 5th season in the NFL, he's been the most consistent piece to the Lions organization during that time. Through four seasons, he's totaled 470 receptions for 4,851 yards and 33 touchdowns. On a 17-game average (per Pro Football Reference), St. Brown averages 111 receptions for 1,250 yards and 9 touchdowns per season. Despite the emergence of players such as Jameson Williams, Jahmyr Gibbs and Sam LaPorta, it hasn't slowed Amon-Ra down. Much of what makes Amon-Ra so dominant and consistent is his ability to win anywhere and everywhere on the field. Primarily aligned out wide or in the slot, there was strong production from either alignment in 2024. According to NextGenStats, St. Brown ran 240 routes from the slot with 39 receptions for 441 yards and five touchdowns. He was targeted 56 times out of the slot. However, he ran 252 routes from a wide alignment. This led to 67 receptions for 740 yards and five touchdowns. He was targeted 75 times from a wide alignment and this resulted in a 89.3% catch percentage. It's clear after the 2024 season that St. Brown is more than just a slot merchant as some like to label him. Let's dive into the film to look more into what makes St. Brown successful from wide alignments. As I reviewed the tape from last season, one of my big takeaways is how the Lions offense somewhat manipulated defenses by condensing their formations. The play above gives a great snapshot of that prior to the snap. At the top of the screen, you'll see Amon-Ra St. Brown aligned on the ball and about two yards from the top of the numbers. From there, you can see that the Lions are aligned in a 2x2 set for their offensive formation. Once the ball is snapped, you'll see St. Brown work through some initial contact, but he manages to get inside leverage on the cornerback. As he threatens vertically, he makes it appear as if he's going to continue vertically on his route. However, he quickly breaks his route to the middle of the field and Jared Goff finds him for a big completion. Moving onto the next play, we'll see a similar formation as the previous play with the Lions coming out in a 2x2 set. However, rather than it being condensed, the receivers are wider. As you can see, St. Brown is aligned at the top of the screen and is about a yard or so from the bottom of the numbers. Once the ball is snapped, you'll see St. Brown reading the cornerback. As the cornerback begins to quickly bail, he breaks his route to the middle of the field, and he slips underneath the linebackers. While St. Brown begins to break towards the middle of the field, you'll see tight end Sam LaPorta begin to run vertically up the seam. As he carries vertically, St. Brown runs underneath, and this would be labeled as a Dagger concept. From there, Jared Goff finds him with ease and it leads to a nice completion. Lastly, I want to focus on an easy pitch-and-catch between Jared Goff and Amon-Ra St. Brown from the Colts game last season. On the play above, the Lions come out in another 2x2 set with St. Brown aligned at the top of the screen. This time, St. Brown is right at the bottom of the numbers. With a safety buzzed down, the expected coverage prior to the snap could be Cover 1, Cover 3 or potentially some type of inverted Cover 4 look from the Colts defense. Once the ball is snapped, it appears to be some variation of Cover 3 from the Colts. On the route, you can see St. Brown work inside and then break back towards the sideline on what appears to be a corner route. Despite the cornerback being over the top of the route, there's plenty of separation due to the fluidity and explosiveness from St. Brown on his route. This gives Goff plenty of room to make a clean pass and it ultimately leads to a first down. Overall, it's certainly a joy to watch Amon-Ra St. Brown on a weekly basis. But it's no secret that he's one of the most consistent playmakers in the NFL. We all know the list of receivers that were drafted prior to him in the 2021 NFL Draft but there's been a misconception on how he's utilized in the Lions offense on a weekly basis. As the data and film indicate, St. Brown is a complete receiver who can win anywhere on the field. Regardless of alignment or route being ran, there are no limitations within his game. I'd expect the production and usage to continue for him in the Detroit Lions offense, regardless of who is calling the plays.
