Asean to welcome Algeria and Uruguay as TAC signatories today
KUALA LUMPUR: Asean is set to welcome Algeria and Uruguay as new signatories to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) today. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, in his speech at the opening ceremony of the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting and Related Meetings, said Asean principles are now being embraced well beyond the region. He added that Malaysia, on Friday, will host the Fourth Cooperation Among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development, reaffirming Asean's solidarity with the Palestinian people. The TAC, first signed in 1976, remains one of Asean's key instruments for promoting peaceful interstate relations. Recently, Foreign Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin at a curtain-raiser press conference ahead of the Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting and related meetings had said that TAC continues to gain momentum, with more countries expressing interest in joining the pact. (Link: Meanwhile, Mohamad said Asean has come a long way since its inception, 58 years ago. "On that day, five of our leaders gathered to plant the seeds of our community, with the signing of the Bangkok Declaration. "This was a major turning point in the history of the region. In 1967, Asean was born into a world defined by nuclear brinkmanship and proxy wars being fought across the globe. "Amid such tensions, it was a visionary act to bring five Southeast Asian nations together in the name of peace. "In a world fragmented by conflict, our founders chose to build bridges and uplift multilateralism," he said. He said today, Asean has never shied away from ambition.

Asean and Brazil can collectively advocate for peace in Gaza strip
KUALA LUMPUR: Asean and Brazil can collectively advocate for peaceful and just resolution to conflicts worldwide, including at the Gaza strip. Foreign Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin said that they can advance the interests of the global south together. "Our collective voices can be instrumental in advocating a peaceful and just resolution to conflicts, including the Israel situation in the Palestinian territory, in particular in Gaza. "It is imperative that we call for Israel to be held accountable for its persistent violations of numerous international laws," he said in his opening address at the Trilateral Meeting between Malaysia, Brazil and the Asean secretariat, here, today. He also said the relationship between Brazil, Malaysia and Asean has also seen economic benefit via trade and business. Other developments with Brazil include collaborations to promote the advancement of sustainable energy in Southeast Asia through a project on biofuels and renewable energy initiated by Brazil. "And third, cooperation through capacity-building initiatives that support Asean's efforts in agriculture and food security. "Brazil's experience in these areas aligns well with Asean's sustainability agenda and the Asean community vision," he said. He added that the meeting served as an opportunity for the Asean secretariat and both nations to explore and identify ways to strengthen partnership on pressing issues including climate change, among others. "I can assure you that Asean has deep interest in further strengthening the partnership between Asean and Brazil," he said. Meanwhile, Brazil's Ambassador Secretary General of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Maria Laura da Rocha, said that Brazil was honoured to be Asean's only sectoral dialogue partner in Latin America. "We reaffirm our long term commitment to this dynamic relationship," she said in the second Asean-Brazil trilateral meeting.
