MeitY contradicts X, says no requirement from Indian govt to withhold Reuters handle
The clarification came hours after Reuters primary and world handles on X (formerly Twitter) were withheld in India shortly after midnight Sunday. Adding, the government is 'continuously working with X to resolve the problem'. New Delhi: The government Sunday contradicted the claim by 'X' that the primary and world handles of news agency Reuters were withheld in India 'in response' to a legal demand. 'There is no requirement from the Government of India to withhold the Reuters handle,' a spokesperson for the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) told ThePrint. X, the micro-blogging platform of which Tesla CEO reportedly owns nearly 10 percent, said the handles were withheld 'in response to a legal demand'. Reuters is the news and media division of the Thomson Reuters Corporation, headquartered in Toronto. It employs 2,600 journalists across 165 countries. ThePrint has reached Reuters for comment but had not received a response by the time of publication. This report will be updated if and when a response is received. While primary and world handles of the news service remain withheld in India, users are still able to access more than 30 active Reuters secondary handles on X, including @ReutersTechNews, @ReutersFactCheck, @ReutersAsia, @ReutersChina, and @ReutersPictures. The Reuters news website too is accessible to users in the country. X had, in the immediate aftermath of Operation Sindoor, issued a statement saying it received more than 8,000 takedown requests from the Indian government which cited national security concerns. ThePrint has also reached X for clarification via email, given MeitY's official statement, but had not received a response by the time of publication. This report will be updated if and when a response is received. (Edited by Amrtansh Arora) Also Read: All about Section 69A of IT Act under which Twitter had withheld several posts & accounts

Air India crash: Army dispatches more than 100 jawans to Ahmedabad to assist rescue ops
'Teams are working in close coordination with local authorities. Our priority is rescue, medical aid and securing the crash site,' an official told ThePrint. 'The response includes engineering teams with JCBs for clearing debris, medical teams with doctors and paramedics, Quick Action Teams (QATs), fire-fighting units with extinguishers and water bowsers, as well as provost staff for site security and crowd management,' it said in a statement. Military Hospital has been placed on alert, it added. New Delhi: The Indian Army has deployed nearly 130 personnel to support ongoing rescue and relief operations after the London-bound Air India aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad Thursday. The Army said that its teams are assisting civil administration efforts under the humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) mandate. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has also deployed approximately 150 personnel to support rescue and relief operations following the crash. News agency ANI quoted a CRPF statement as saying, 'troops from the 100 Battalion of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and personnel from the CRPF's Group Centre in Gandhinagar have been mobilised to assist with on-ground efforts at the crash site.' A top official from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had earlier told ThePrint that most of the 242 people aboard the flight are feared dead. The aircraft, AI171, was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with registration VT-ANB and serial number 36279. According to Flightradar24, which tracks live flight data globally, the aircraft lost signal at 10:08 am (GMT+1), at an altitude of just 625 feet, less than a minute after take-off from Ahmedabad International Airport. The flight was scheduled to land at London Gatwick Airport at 6:25 pm (GMT+1). TATA Group which took over Air India in January 2022 took to X to confirm the incident through a statement by its chairman, N. Chandrasekaran. 'At this moment, our primary focus is on supporting all the affected people and their families. We are doing everything in our power to assist the emergency response teams at the site and provide all necessary support and care to those impacted,' he said. Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer, also released a statement Thursday, saying it is in contact with Air India and stands 'ready to support them'. 'Our thoughts are with the passengers, crew, first responders, and all affected,' the company added. According to the Boeing website, the 787-8 Dreamliner can carry up to 248 passengers, has a wingspan of 60 metres and a range of over 13,500 km. The aircraft operates on over 425 non-stop global routes, many of which had never been served before its induction. (Edited by Amrtansh Arora) Also Read: What Air India's fleet looks like in 2025

Taking note of Istanbul's patronage of Islamabad, JNU suspends MoU with Inonu University in Turkey
In a statement issued on its official X handle Wednesday, JNU said, 'Due to National Security considerations, the MoU between JNU and Inonu University, Türkiye stands suspended until further notice. JNU stands with the Nation.' The boycott of Turkish goods and services in India has intensified following Turkey's vocal support for Pakistan in the aftermath of India's military action under Operation Sindoor. Besides, the alleged use of Turkish-origin drones by Pakistan to breach Indian airspace have triggered strong public and political backlash in India. New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Wednesday announced the suspension of its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Inonu University in Turkey, citing national security concerns. JNU Vice Chancellor Santishree Pandit said two schools from JNU were involved: the School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies (SLL&CS) and the School of International Studies (SIS), under the MoU. 'While a faculty [from Inonu University] is there who teaches Languages, Literature and Culture in SLL&CS, SIS deals with Turkey in world affairs. JNU has suspended the MOU due to national security considerations as JNU stands with the Nation and the Armed Forces, many of whom are JNU Alumni,' the VC said. According to university officials, the MoU was signed in February this year to facilitate academic collaboration. 'JNU has nearly 80 active MoUs with universities across the globe for research collaboration, as well as student and faculty exchange. This agreement was purely academic in nature, just like the others,' a senior JNU official told ThePrint on condition of anonymity. The university currently holds academic MoUs with institutions in the United Kingdom, the United States, South Korea, Japan, France, Germany, and several other countries. Inonu University was the only university from Turkey having an active MoU with JNU at present. There is also growing demand for a tourism boycott of both Turkey and Azerbaijan, following Ankara and Baku's support for Islamabad and their criticism of India's strikes on terror camps in Pakistan. There are online campaigns on social media for the same. According to media reports, MakeMyTrip has seen a 60 percent decline in bookings to Turkey and Azerbaijan, accompanied by a sharp rise in cancellations. Besides, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) Wednesday issued a statement urging the Indian film industry to avoid shooting films in Turkey in the future. ISPR says main logistics hub in Rawalpindi among 3 Pakistan Air Force bases targeted by Indian missiles
General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, the ISPR DG, claimed as per information coming in all Pakistan Air Force assets remain safe. 'Continuing its naked aggression, India some time back has fired air-to-surface missiles with its jets. Pakistan military's information wing the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed the explosions, blaming them on an Indian missile attack. ISPR DG in a late night statement said India has targeted the Pakistan Air Force's (PAF) Nur Khan (Chaklala, Rawalpindi district), Murid (Chakwal) and Rafiqui (Shorkot, Jhang district) air bases. New Delhi: Explosions were reported in the early hours of Saturday from three Pakistan air bases including the military's primary logistics hub the Nur Khan base in Rawalpindi, hours after Pakistan launched a fresh wave of drones and loitering munitions targeting several Indian cities, and particularly the Sirsa air base of the Indian Air Force (IAF). PAF Nur Khan base, PAF Murid base and Shorkot base were targeted. According to information till now, all PAF assets are safe,' Pakistani daily Dawn quoted him as saying. Incidentally, several purported videos posted by Pakistani citizens on various social media platforms showed what appeared to be a ball of fire at at least two bases including Nur Khan. Indian officials remain mum on the ISPR's claims, but maintain that there will be a briefing later in the day to apprise the country on the developments. Pakistan Air Force Squadrons stationed at the Nur Khan base are No. 6, 10, 12, and 41. The aircraft which are based there include C-130s and IL-78, besides the Saab Erieye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) fleet. Incidentally, hours before these blasts, Pakistan launched a fresh wave of drones and loitering munitions targeting at least 26 locations along the northern and western sectors, ranging from Baramulla in J&K to Bhuj in Gujarat—states along the International Border and Line of Control. These included suspected armed drones posing potential threats to civilian and military targets, said the Ministry of Defence (MoD). Among cities targeted were Baramulla, Srinagar, Avantipora, Nagrota, Jammu, Ferozpur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Lalgarh Jatta, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bhuj, Kuarbet and Lakhi Nala. The Indian Army added that 'an armed drone targeted a civilian area in Ferozepur, resulting in severe injuries to members of a local family'. Pakistan targets Jammu with loitering munitions, airport and vital installations targeted
Sources also confirmed gunshots were heard in the Satwari and Gandhi Nagar areas. No casualties have been reported so far, sources said. Sources told ThePrint that Jammu airport was also targeted and at least six blasts were reported from across the city. It is not clear at this time if these were actual hits by Pakistan or interception by Indian air defence systems. New Delhi: Pakistan Thursday carried out an aerial attack on Jammu city with at least four loitering munitions. Multiple explosions were reported from parts of the city. It is also learnt that heavy firing is also on in the Samba area. This comes on the day India thwarted attempts by Pakistan to target Indian military installations spread across the western and northern sectors including in Srinagar, Jammu, Amritsar and Pathankot through its own air defence systems on the night of 7-8 May. Pakistan had attempted to engage a number of military targets in northern and western India including Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj, using drones and missiles. These were neutralised by the Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems. The debris of these attacks is now being recovered from a number of locations that prove the Pakistani attacks,' a defence ministry statement had said.
