'Helps connect with people across country': Amruta Fadnavis backs Hindi; calls for it to be taught in Maharashtra schools

Amruta Fadnavis (File Photo) In a remark that could provide fresh ammunition to the opposition, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's wife Amruta Fadnavis on Wednesday said Hindi should be taught in schools, as it helps connect with people across the country. Her statement came three days after the BJP-led government withdrew a government resolution (GR) which introduced Hindi as a third language from Classes 1 to 5. "Marathi is number one (language) for Maharashtra, no doubt about it. To communicate at the global level, English is useful. But for connecting with people across the country, from North to South and East to West, I personally feel Hindi could be included in the curriculum," Amruta Fadnavis told reporters here. Students should have the freedom to choose from available language options, she said, adding, "It will help in promoting inclusivity. Students should get options to learn (languages) and they can choose," she added. The Fadnavis government had initially announced in April that Hindi would be introduced as a third language from Class 1, triggering criticism from opposition parties who accused the BJP of trying to `impose' Hindi at the cost of Marathi. The government then said it was putting the decision on hold, but a fresh GR clarified that Hindi could still be taught as an optional third language. The move drew even stronger backlash, and opposition parties and groups such as the Marathi Abhyas Kendra mounted pressure on the government, forcing it to withdraw the two GRs and announce the formation of a committee to review the policy.

Amruta Fadnavis called ‘wife of Maharashtra's head of state' at Cannes event, internet baffled

A title used for Amruta Fadnavis, wife of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, at an event at the Cannes Film Festival has confused the internet. In an image going viral, she is introduced as the 'wife of Maharashtra's head of state'. 'Spoke on 'Women's Equity at #cannes #cannesfilmfestival for #betterworld & #unesco and also signed up for being an 'Ambassador for Women's Rights'!!!' Amruta Fadnavis wrote on Instagram as he shared a series of pictures from the event. Among the photos she shared, one shows her outfit she donned to attend the event. She is seen wearing a pantsuit complete with flower motifs. Another picture shows her in conversation with two women, with her introduction featured on a screen behind them. 'AMRUTA FADNAVIS, Banker, Singer, Social Activist & Wife of the Head of State of Maharashtra, India,' it reads. The picture soon went viral on social media, with several expressing confusion. An individual wrote, 'Her husband is not the head of state of Maharashtra.' Another remarked, 'Nope, she's not'. A third joined, 'Wait, head of state is Governor, not CM, CM is the head of the Government.' A fourth commented, 'That's factually incorrect. The head of state is the Governor. CM is the head of the government.'

Amruta Fadnavis bats for cultural diplomacy through music

Amruta Fadnavis, wife of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, added a note of elegance and insight at the WAVES Summit 2025 in Mumbai, calling music 'the most beautiful language in the world' and applauding the summit for creating a global wave of musical unity. Speaking at the event, Amruta said, 'WAVES has helped create a wave for music. It's not just Mumbai or Maharashtra, the entire world is talking about the WAVES Summit and is eager to be part of it.' She emphasized that this international buzz is a significant step forward in strengthening diplomatic and cultural ties for India. Amruta also addressed the Indian government's support for creative industries, especially in light of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment to elevate India's content creators through initiatives akin to IITs and IIMs. 'Creators need strong support from both the government and the public. Only then can they effectively take Indian culture global. Policies and facilities must reflect that commitment,' she said. Highlighting Maharashtra's economic gain from the summit, Amruta revealed that the state has received an investment boost of ₹8,000 crore, thanks to the global attention drawn by WAVES. She also cited the example of Korean hip-hop's international impact, explaining how cultural exports can translate into soft power and tourism. 'Over 2 lakh people have enrolled to learn the Korean language. It's not just about entertainment—it's about learning their economy and boosting their tourism,' she noted. Amruta urged India to present its rich heritage in a similar light. 'If we showcase our folk and classical music with the same passion, it will give an unprecedented boost to Indian tourism,' she concluded. The WAVES Summit, hosted by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, began on May 1 and will conclude on May 4. It brings together global leaders, creators, and stakeholders in entertainment to position India as a global hub for content creation.
