Idris Elba opens up on ageing, says he isn't getting easily influenced

Actor and musician Idris Elba talked about the challenges of ageing. The Heads of State actor appeared on the latest episode of Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast and discussed the pros and cons of being in the 50s. "I don't love that, at this age, the age of having wellness and consciousness, is so upon us, yet our bodies fail us," Elba said. Poehler agreed, "The biggest bummer," joking in addition, "I mean, the fact that you can get hurt just getting out of bed." Elba shared that for their generation, "Some of the coolest things — art, music, culture, some of the craziest world politics that set the dynamics for where we are right now — all happened when our emotions were blossoming, and our adolescence was growing." Reflecting on another positive side of this age, he said, "Your influences change," adding, "I think in my 30s and 40s, I was blowing with the wind a little bit with what was influencing me, what my goals were." "And in the 50s, I'm like, 'Nah. That wind has to pass around me.' I'm not getting as easily influenced," he said. At 52, Elba is also "not afraid of difficult things, or challenges that make me uncomfortable." "And to choose your own discomfort is like a privilege at our age," said Poehler," 'It's gonna be uncomfortable, but I'm gonna be in charge of it.' " "We talk about AI and all that stuff. I refer to it as like, 'Wow. That's the future that we talked about as kids that was just in our imaginations, and here it is, " Elba was quoted as saying by People.

Idris Elba says 'grim' memories of his pre-Hollywood job help keep him motivated

At 52, Idris Elba has made a name for himself as an actor, a producer, and even a DJ who played at Coachella this year. He says he gets his drive from not forgetting what his pre-Hollywood life was like. During an interview on the " Good Hang with Amy Poehler" podcast published on Tuesday, "The Wire" actor spoke about his career and how the challenges he faced before fame continue to motivate him. Elba told host Amy Poehler that he didn't find success until he was around 35 and that life before that was often difficult. "There were some very tough times," he said. Coming from a working-class family, Elba said he grew up without having much "at all," adding that he had spent more of his life being poor than he has been famous or successful. Part of what drives him is the fear of losing the success he's worked so hard to achieve: "There's part of it which is like, 'I don't want to let this go, so I just keep chucking for it,'" Elba said. But the main thing that keeps him going is the memory of his pre-Hollywood job, he said. He used to work the "night shift" at the Ford Motor Company in Dagenham, East London. "That is grim. It's a grim job, all right," Elba said. "Nothing compares to doing that, so when I get an opportunity to come and work with you, to come and work on a set, it doesn't even feel like work." While it may seem to others that he's working incredibly hard now that he's famous, he doesn't see it that way. "Actually, it's not that hard," he said. Moreover, his Hollywood career allows him to try his hand at many different things, unlike his factory job. "You know, in a job like that, I did the same thing every night. Every night for two straight years. My dad did the same job for 25 years, so I consider this a privilege. This ain't work," Elba said. In a 2019 interview with The Hollywood Reporter promoting his then-partnership with the automobile manufacturer, Elba said he worked at Ford in the '80s because of his dad. "My dad didn't want me to be a broke actor," Elba told The Hollywood Reporter. In a 2022 SiriusXM interview, the actor said he also used to work as a security guard at a comedy club in New York City, and even sold weed to some comedians, including Dave Chappelle. In a 2023 podcast, Elba said that he started going to therapy because he was "an absolute workaholic." "It's just because I have some unhealthy habits that have really formed. And I work in an industry that I'm rewarded for those unhealthy habits," he said. Elba isn't the only actor who has spoken about their less-than-glamorous jobs before becoming famous. Christopher Walken used to work in a circus when he was a child, while Nicole Kidman used to be a massage therapist, and Hugh Jackman was a physical education teacher at a high school before getting his big acting break.

Watch Amy Poehler and Idris Elba Have an Accidental Twinning Moment on Her Podcast — and Then Swap Jackets!

Amy Poehler and Idris Elba had a hilarious twinning moment on her Good Hang podcast The two actors attempted to swap matching jackets at the end of the podcast Elba stars alongside John Cena in Heads of State, which will be released on Wednesday, July 2Amy Poehler and Idris Elba had to laugh about their accidental twinning moment during the latest episode of Poehler's Good Hang podcast. When The Wire alum entered the podcast studio in a white t-shirt and periwinkle blue jacket, Poehler, 53, erupted into laughter because she was wearing the same thing. "We're twinning!" the Parks and Recreation alum said, to which Elba joked, "Wow. Cue a slow, slow motion music..." "You know, there is a part of me that always tries to think about what the guest would wear and I do try a little bit unconsciously to just dress for my guests," Poehler joked during the Tuesday, July 1, episode. "Oh, no way you're joking. You did it! Look at us, we did it. I could take this off and do the t-shirt," Elba offered. Poehler made it clear that she did not mind their surprising twinning moment. "No, I feel like we got to... We have to stay in it now," she said. The pair went on to discuss their shared astrological signs. They're both Virgos who were born in the 1970s. Towards the end of the episode, Elba referenced the time-honored English football tradition of players trading jerseys. "We're wearing what? How would you describe this color?" Poehler asked. "Petrol blue," Elba replied. "I was thinking, do you watch football or soccer? Right at the end of a really great game, there's a tradition where the greatest players against each other trade..." "Okay let's trade shirts. We're going to trade," Poehler said, laughing. "Let's do it, buddy," Elba said. "This is exciting, and I have a feeling this is not going to fit. Let's see how far you can get into my jacket," Poehler said as the studio erupted in giggles. "Technically you don't have to wear it because usually it's full of sweat," Elba said, to which Poehler replied, looking into the camera, "By the way, the shirt smells great. Listeners, if you wanted to know, the shirt smells great. Oh wow, okay, hold on a minute. Oh, I like this look." Elba said, trying on one sleeve of Poehler's jacket. "One sleeve, just one is good," Poehler said, laughing. "Tiny jacket. But tiny jackets are funny! Tiny jackets are so funny. Look, we did it! We traded! This is good comedy." While Elba appeared in the studio, John Cena appeared via video call. The two star in Heads of State, which will be released on Amazon Prime Video on Wednesday, July 2. In the action comedy film, Cena, 48, plays a U.S. president at odds with a British prime minister (Elba). EXCLUSIVE Tina Fey and Amy Poehler poke fun at Meghan Markle with barbed comment about her recipes

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler poked fun at Meghan Markle during their stand-up comedy show over the weekend after the Duchess of Sussex was reprimanded by the queen of jams over her latest As Ever release. The Saturday Night Live alums took over Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City on Saturday, June 21, for their Restless Leg Tour where they threw shade at many stars including Prince Harry 's wife, Ben Affleck and Channing Tatum, according to an insider who spoke with Daily Mail. Tina, 55, and Amy, 53, opened the show with a monologue that was similar to them hosting a past Golden Globe award show as they took the stage wearing sparkly gowns with the 30 Rock star comparing her gold dress to ' Heidi Klum for Spirit of Halloween' and jewelry from the 'Disney Pandora menopause collection.' At first, they joked about the celebrities who were not in attendance at Ocean's Ovation Hall theatre, kicking it off with Ben Affleck. 'Ben Affleck is not here. He's home going through his contacts looking for more Jennifers to bother,' Tina said. Amy added, ' Nicole Kidman is not here tonight. She's too busy being in every single movie and TV show in her name.' The Saturday Night Live alums roasted celebrities like the Duchess of Sussex, Ben Affleck and Channing Tatum as they took the stage at Ocean's Ovation Hall on Saturday 'Leonardo DiCaprio is not here. I assume because Amy and I have combined age of 105,' Tina continued their opening speech. Then, Amy dissed Meghan Markle, 43, for not being in the crowd because she was too busy cooking, specifically baking cookies topped with edible flower petals (also known as 'flower sprinkles') - featured on her With Love, Meghan Netflix show. 'Meghan Markle is not here tonight. She's putting flower sprinkles on cookies, and Piers Morgan is furiously rage masturbating about it,' the Parks and Recreation star snided, referring to the UK journalist who mocks Prince Harry and Meghan. Continuing their celebrity roast, they told the audience that they argue with each other over how they would 'cook Channing Tatum.' Amy insisted she would 'dice him up and pan fry him over an open flame,' while Tina suggested she would 'slow braise' and top 'olive oil with lemon,' and then 'save his skin to make merkins so that no spiders get into our vaginas at night.' Although there were no celebs in the audience, Amy and Tina praised the 'white women' in the crowd as the theater lights came on and the comedians gave a sigh of relief that it was 'finally a safe place for you.' The joke was seemingly in reference to the heightened sexual assault accusations and convictions in Hollywood, including Harvey Weinstein, who is serving a 16-year sentence after being convicted of rape and sexual assault in 2022. They made a comment later on in the show about how they did some 'fun things' with him in 2012, but then Tina told the audience, 'Don't worry about it. Don't Google it. Tina informed all the mothers in the audience that they shouldn't waste their time making Meghan's 'fruit rainbow' for birthday parties because kids don't remember at a young age The famous friends continued the show with different segments, including a mock SNL Weekend Update with surprise guest Will Forte followed by Amy doing her own stand-up comedy bit to 'test out new material,' she said, and Tina following suit by sharing a timeline of their friendship. When Tina talked about throwing her kids' birthday parties when they were younger - she has two daughters with her husband Jeff Richmond (Alice, 19, and Penelope, 13) - she informed the audience that parents shouldn't stress about throwing parties. 'They're not going to remember their first seven birthday parties. They'll remember the feeling of being loved. They're not going to remember if the Bluey plates don't match the Paw Patrol cup,' she said. The Mean Girls actress then added in another Meghan Markle joke. This time referencing the mother-of-two's fruit platter made in the shape of a rainbow. 'So, if you're like making a Meghan Sussex fruit rainbow, just know that you're doing that for you. Okay? You're doing that to prove something to yourself and that's okay too,' Tina shared with all the mothers in the audience. Shortly after, she shaded Meghan and Harry blurring their kids' faces when sharing photos of Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four, with the public. When highlighting the year 2008, Tina said that Amy gave birth to her 'beautiful son Archie,' who is now 16 (she also has a son Abel, 14, with ex Will Arnett). In the slideshow behind her, she showed a photo of Amy with Archie and blurred Archie's face - similar to the way Meghan and Harry blur photos of their Archie. 'I wanted to respect Archie's privacy so that is a picture of Amy with a baby filter on it,' Tina said. 'Still really cute.' In the past, Amy commented about Prince Harry and Meghan naming their son Archie. She told Seth Meyers back in 2019, that they 'look like a real cute couple and I love that name [Archie].' The Late Night with Seth Meyers host noted that Amy had her own 'William and Harry situation' with her two sons because her youngest, Abel, is also a redhead. She remarked, 'Now that you say it, I really feel that they're copying me. Like, "get off my jock, man!" But joking about it, she added that the royal family can get away with copying her because it's legal in England. Tina and Amy performed two sold out shows at Ocean Casino Resort on June 21st - a matinee and an evening show - along with Zarna Garg who opened for them. They closed out each event by sitting on comfy chairs in pajamas as they read questions submitted by fans. In between sets, they enjoyed cuisine from the hotel's popular seafood restaurant, Linguini By The Sea, an insider shared with Daily Mail. Their show at Ocean was part of the hotel's Summer of Sevens birthday celebration, which is a lineup of 'seven cherry-picked new experiences' offered by the resort, including promotions and sweepstakes and headline entertainment. After headlining Atlantic City, they performed their final show of their tour - which began in March in Orlando - on Sunday at the Prudential Center in Newark.
