Law and the City – K-drama Episode 1 Recap & Review
Episode 1 Episode 1 of Law and the City begins with an introduction to lawyer An Ju-hyeong. A voiceover tells us that he is in his 9th year of the profession and then describes how lawyers are exhausted all the time. We're also slowly introduced to his other friends, Ha Sang-ki, Cho Chang-won, Bae Mun-jeong, and Yu Dong-wook, all of whom work in different law firms in the same building. We then see glimpses of Ju-hyeong's 8-year career as he deals with lying and cheating clients. He finally realises that he doesn't have to be his client's friend. At present, he goes out to deal with a case and gives the rookie defence lawyer some advice. When he's back, he meets with a visually impaired man called Park Kyeong-heon, an accountant who is a new client. Park was once charged with assault by his client, Kim Seung-guk and had accepted the charges as an easy way out. But now he wants to fight for the truth. All five lawyers meet for lunch at their usual hangout and discuss their day, work, and salary issues. Ju-hyeong says he has a blind date that evening, which makes everyone smirk. Apparently, he has a track record of never liking his dates. He then goes back to work and studies the evidence in Kyeong-heon's case, which includes an audio recording of the fight between Kyeong-heon and Seung-guk. He visits Kyeong-heon's office and watches him to make sure he is actually blind. Kyeong-heon then explains that Seung-guk fabricated the recording to sound like he was being attacked. He even hit himself to develop bruises. Ju-hyeon then goes on his blind date but, as predicted, does not enjoy it. He joins his friends for dinner and we learn that Dong-wook quit his job. They celebrate his decision with a few drinks. In the morning, we are introduced to Kang Hee-ji, a young woman who gives an interview at Dong-wook's old law firm. The managing partner, Kang Jung-yoon, is impressed by Hee-ji and hires her on the spot. In Dong-wook's handover files, she finds the contact numbers of his friends with whom he has lunch. She's surprised to learn they are from different firms. She goes through their pictures and seems to recognise one of Ju-hyeong's photographs. Meanwhile, Ju-hyeong keeps working on the Park Kyeong-heon case and finds that Kyeong-heon and Seung-guk once shared the same address. At lunch, Mun-jeong tells the others that Hee-ji reached out to her and will be meeting them for dinner. Hee-ji then goes to a ruling hearing with one of her old clients, despite lawyers generally sitting those out. Her boss, Jung-yoon comes across her and is surprised to learn how close she is with her client. Ju-hyeong meets Kyeong-heon and confronts him about the same address. Kyeong-heon admits that he and Seung-guk were romantic partners and Kyeong-heon initially accepted the charges to avoid outing Seung-guk's identity. He now wants to appeal the case because he doesn't want to lose his accountant's license. They go to court and while making his case, Ju-hyeong says Kyeong-heon and Seung-guk were roommates, therefore not outing Seung-guk. Afterwards, Kyeong-heon thanks him for believing him but Ju-hyeong says he never believed him; he only offered the most convincing facts of the case. Elsewhere, a woman approaches a room with all the law firm CEOs. Could she be the show's villain? She's definitely got that energy. An Ju-hyeong then joins his friends for drinks. Sometime later, Hee-ji enters the restaurant and Ju-hyeong seems to recognise her. The Episode Review Law and the City Episode 1 kicks this new K-drama off quite well! We get a solid overview of Ju-hyeon's life, particularly how his earlier desire to help people has been warped over time into indifference. Lee Jong-suk plays his cold, aloof nature quite well and even offers a nice contrast when Ju-hyeon loosens up around his friends. There's also a calm, easygoing vibe during all the scenes where the friends hang out together that leans into the slice of life genre. But the final scene gives us a glimpse of the woman who could be the drama's villain, so the jury's still out on that. We don't see a lot of Mun Ka-young here but it's clear how different she is from Ju-hyeon. It's also clear that she and Ju-hyeon have a past connection and depending on your level of experience with this trope — whether you enjoy it or are exhausted by it — this could either be exciting or tiresome. However, for now, the heart of the series seems to be the group of lawyer friends and all the characters have more than enough chemistry to make us want to keep watching.
